Black Ops studio moves up one year in development rotation

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 - Firebreak aiming a gun

This year’s Call of Duty sequel will be developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, confirming a report more than a year old that Treyarch’s turn to make the game was being moved up a year.

Daniel Alegre, Activision’s chief operating officer, confirmed Treyarch’s role in a quarterly earnings call with investors on Tuesday afternoon. Alegre said Raven and Treyarch would handle “the next premium installment for Call of Duty,” meaning a full title; the two studios later tweeted about their work together.

Treyarch is part of a three-studio rotation that includes Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games. In May 2019, Kotaku reported that Treyarch, which developed 2018’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and wasn’t due to make another game until 2021, was stepping in for the 2020 game because the collaboration between Sledgehammer and Raven was not going well. Sledgehammer, which made 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII, was said not to be the lead studio in the original 2020 CoD plans.

Activision has not revealed any details about the next Call of Duty game yet, although the lack of an E3, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other news events have interrupted most normal marketing efforts. As Treyarch is the studio responsible for the Black Ops arc, today’s confirmation strongly suggests this year’s game will be the fifth of that series. No title or launch date has been confirmed.

The most recent Call of Duty, 2019’s Modern Warfare by Infinity Ward, introduced the Warzone battle royale mode. Earlier today, Infinity Ward’s design director confirmed that the stand-alone, free-to-play mode will continue to exist as its own game after subsequent CoDs are released, and it will tie into the events and lore of those games.

The next Call of Duty game is Black Ops: Cold War

The latest game in the Black Ops series is here

Treyarch’s next installment in the Call of Duty franchise is a return to familiar territory. Earlier today, the developer released the first teaser trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War.

The teaser, first discovered by CharlieIntel, is made up entirely of newsreels and historical footage, likely providing a background for the game’s plot. The trailer itself is heavy on the Cold War intrigue, and introduces players to a Soviet spy codenamed Perseus. According to the teaser — and some light Googling — Perseus was never caught, and infiltrated deeply into some of the most secretive U.S. defense institutions in order to give the USSR an edge in the global arms race.

The trailer centers around an actual television interview with KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov, who describes the slow and careful ways that the Soviet Union was working to undermine the United States. Bezmenov, a former Soviet journalist who became a prominent anti-communist author and speaker in the west after his defection, explains that the Soviet Union had a careful, decades-long plan to infiltrate and destabilize America.

“It’s a slow process which we called active measures,” says Bezmenov. He explains that there are four stages to this plan which will eventually lead to Normalization, which he describes as “what will happen in the United States if you allow all the schmucks to put a Big Brother government in Washington D.C. who will promise loads of things, no matter whether the promises were fulfilled or not.” Finally he ends with a strong warning, “the time bomb is ticking. With every second the disaster is coming closer and closer. The danger is real.”
While he explains all of this, the teaser show flashes of everything from the Vietnam War, civil rights protests, government meetings, and speeches given by Ronald Reagan.
The teaser’s release was timed with members of the Call of Duty community completing a multi-day ARG that involved various forms of Cold War-style code breaking, which led them to secret rooms inside the Verdansk map in Call of Duty: Warzone — which seems to imply there could be a connection between Black Ops: Cold War and Warzone. The ARG also included a variety of video tapes, each corresponding to a year in Cold War history, with similar clips to the ones in this teaser.
The new Call of Duty is the latest in Treyarch’s Black Ops series, but since the latest iteration was set in the year 2043, it’s not exactly clear how this game fits into the timeline. Since this game appears to be set in the Cold War, it’s pretty likely it won’t take place in the future. But we don’t know if this is an alternate Cold War that will lead up to the events of the rest of the series, or if it’s some kind of hard reset on the Black Ops storyline.
The trailer ends with the reveal of the Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War title, and the news that it will be revealed in full on Aug. 26.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War won’t have a free next-gen upgrade, according to leak

You’ll need to buy the Cross-Gen Bundle if you want to play on multiple generations

Graphic featuring the new Sony PS5 on the left and the new Xbox Series X on the right

On Aug. 26, Treyarch and Activision will unveil Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War inside the Warzone mode — the franchise’s free-to-play battle royale mode. But the next entry in the Call of Duty series has already seen several leaks already this week. Early Tuesday, players discovered a full description for the new game. Players have now also discovered multiple different editions — including the Cross-Gen Bundle.

According to the leak, Activision will offer a Standard Edition, Cross-Gen Bundle, and Ultimate Edition. The Standard Edition is supposedly, by definition, pretty standard — coming with the Frank Woods Operator and a beta when you pre-order. The Cross-Gen Bundle is the interesting inclusion here.

The apparent existence of a Cross-Gen Bundle suggests that players who buy the standard edition won’t automatically get access to the upgraded version of Cold War for PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series X. The Cross-Gen Bundle could cost more — albeit hopefully less than buying the full game a second time.

It’s currently unclear how much the Cross-Gen Bundle will cost players who want to play the new Call of Duty on multiple machines. This continues the wild west nature of third-party pricing going into the next generation of consoles.

But truly devoted Call of Duty players won’t need to worry about the Cross-Gen Bundle at all. The game’s Ultimate Edition includes both a current and a next-gen version of the game, as well as other goodies like operators, vehicles, and weapon skins, a battle pass bundle, and a weapons pack. Like the Cross-Gen Bundle, it’s currently unclear how much an Ultimate Edition will run interested players.

We’ll likely learn more about the pricing for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War during the reveal event on Aug. 26.

Zombies are back for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Treyarch is bringing the fan-favorite mode back to Call of Duty

Zombies mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

On Wednesday, Treyarch announced first details for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, including the fact that zombies will make a return for the series’ newest entry.

Zombies is a mode that’s been a hallmark of the Treyarch Call of Duty games for over a decade, starting with Call of Duty: World at War. The mode generally involves players — either alone or in co-op — defending an area from hordes of undead enemies. Players earn cash for every kill they get, which they can use to buy weapons and power-ups for the increasingly-difficult waves of enemies.

While we didn’t get many actual details about the mode in the new game, Treyarch did share a few of its out-of-game features. Zombies in Black Ops Cold War will benefit from the game’s cross-generation cross-play feature, which will allow players on all consoles, both current generation and next generation, to play together.

Treyarch said it would share more zombies info sometime in the near future. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to launch on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One on Nov. 13, and will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X when those consoles launch during the holidays later this year.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s next-gen upgrade path is complicated

Which version should you buy?

Artwork of a bisected soldier from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

This year’s Call of Duty game will be available on both current-gen consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) as well as next-gen consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X). The good news is that Activision and developers Treyarch and Raven Software will support cross-generation cross-play for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Less comforting is the somewhat confusing upgrade path that Call of Duty players may face if they plan on purchasing Black Ops Cold War on a current-gen platform this November and later upgrading to the next-gen version.

Black Ops Cold War will be available in both physical and digital forms on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. (The game is also coming to Windows PC, where it will be sold digitally through Battle.net.)

Players who purchase the standard physical version of Black Ops Cold War on PS4 will be able to upgrade to the PS5 version through the PlayStation Store (seemingly for a fee, since the standard next-gen version of the game costs $10 more than the standard current-gen version). However, if you want to play your physical PS4 copy of Black Ops Cold War on PS5 (with the next-gen upgrades), you’ll need to have the disc in the system. That means that if you’re in the market for the discless Digital Edition of the PlayStation 5, your Black Ops Cold War PS4 disc won’t let you upgrade.

Players who purchase the standard physical version of Black Ops Cold War on Xbox One won’t be able to upgrade to the Xbox Series X version, as PlayStation players can.

However, Activision notes:

Both current generation versions (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) will be playable on their respective next-generation console via backwards compatibility by inserting the disc into the console. But, the game will not include any of the next-generation features, such as higher framerate, hardware-based ray-tracing, faster load times, and more.
Activision will also sell physical versions of the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, for $69.99 each. For the Xbox Series X, that physical copy will be playable on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X. (A PS5 physical copy will not function on a PS4.)

The most straightforward way to play is probably the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Cross-Gen Bundle. That digital package, which costs $69.99, will be available on current- and next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Here’s Activision’s official description of the Cross-Gen Bundle for each platform from its Black Ops Cold War editions FAQ:

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5: Purchase the Cross-Gen Bundle on PlayStation 4 and receive a digital entitlement to both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game. The PlayStation 4 version will download immediately to your console when Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13th. The PlayStation 5 version of the game will automatically become available for download from your account library once the PlayStation 5 launches later this year. If you purchase the Cross-Gen Bundle on PlayStation 5, you will also receive an entitlement to the PlayStation 4 version of the game.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X: Purchase the Cross-Gen Bundle on Xbox One and receive a digital entitlement to both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions of the game. The Xbox One version will download immediately to your console when Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13th. The Xbox Series X version of the game will automatically become available for download from your account library once the Xbox Series X launches later this year. If you purchase the Cross-Gen Bundle on Xbox Series X, you will also receive an entitlement to the Xbox One version of the game.
Activision is also selling a digital Ultimate Edition for $99.99, which includes the Cross-Gen Bundle and some extra digital goods, like a battle pass for Cold War’s first season, skins, blueprints, and more.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is coming to PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One on Nov. 13. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions are expected to arrive when those consoles launch.

so its better for xbox users to get the xbox series X version which is backwards compatible with xbox one and playstation users get the ps4 version which they can easily upgrade later for ps5. this is the lay man terms for this article and whom so ever wants to later play cod on next gen

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will have a 40-player Fireteam mode

The biggest mode in the game

On Wednesday, Treyarch shared the first new details on the multiplayer for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, including a brand new mode called Fireteam. Fireteam will be Black Ops Cold War’s biggest mode and will throw 40 players onto a map at once to compete over special objectives.

To help break up the mode’s massive number of players in each match, players will be divided into squads of four called fireteams. To help accommodate all these players, Fireteam will also take place on specific larger maps, complete with vehicles to help squads traverse the map.

Fireteam will have a variety of game modes, but Treyarch only introduced one during the stream called Dirty Bomb. Dirty Bomb tasks squads with finding uranium that’s hidden on the map and delivering it to certain dirty bomb locations. Once players have delivered the and armed the bomb, it will explode irradiating the area around it and changing that section of the map for the rest of the match.

During the stream, Treyarch studio design director David Vonderhaar said that the developer will have more to share in the near future ahead of Black Ops Cold War’s public beta.

Black Ops Cold War’s Zombies Onslaught mode is PS4/PS5-exclusive for one year

Just like Modern Warfare’s Spec Ops Survival mode last year

Following the path of other recent Call of Duty games, the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will have a platform-exclusive mode for the first year of the game’s release. The Zombies Onslaught mode will be available only on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 until Nov. 1, 2021, publisher Activision announced Friday on the PlayStation Blog.

Zombies Onslaught is a “fast paced” two-player survival mode in which players face “a seemingly unending” and progressively more difficult “horde of zombies” while they are forced to move through multiple locations on a given map, according to the post. The mode combines the undead enemies of Call of Duty’s traditional Zombies mode with the maps from Black Ops Cold War’s normal multiplayer component. Rewards unlocked while playing Zombies Onslaught will apply across multiplayer and Zombies play.

Activision also confirmed that even though the rest of Black Ops Cold War supports cross-platform and cross-generation play, Zombies Onslaught will be limited to PlayStation consoles for nearly 12 full months. The publisher did the same thing with last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, making its Spec Ops Survival mode available only on PS4 from the game’s debut on Oct. 25, 2019, until Oct. 1, 2020. Sony and Activision have had a deal for PlayStation-exclusive Call of Duty content for many years, starting with 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

In addition to PS4 and PS5, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be released on Nov. 13 for Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

sony doing it again, i hope xbox does it with its newly aquired bethesda studio :D

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War needs 50 to 250 GB of storage at launch

Delete last year’s Call of Duty to free up space

If you were hoping for this year’s Call of Duty to eat up less hard drive space than the voluminous Call of Duty: Modern Warfare did last year, you’re out of luck. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will need just as much storage, if not more, when it launches on Nov. 13.

Activision and Treyarch released Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s minimum and recommended hardware specifications on Thursday, showing that if you want to experience the totality of this year’s COD, you’ll need at least 175 GB of storage space. If you just came here for multiplayer, however, you’ll need far less: 50 GB. The 175 GB number is for all of Black Ops Cold War’s modes.

For players with the beefiest of PCs who want to play Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War with 4K textures, that’ll swallow up 250 GB of storage space.

Here’s a handy visual of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s PC specifications (a full text version follows):

A table showing off the PC system requirements for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Image: Activision
Black Ops Cold War’s storage footprint is on par with last year’s game. 2019’s Modern Warfare also required a minimum of 175 GB, but it wasn’t until recently that PC players had the option to uninstall game modes they weren’t playing. That meant more than 200 GB of space reserved for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, a storage issue that appears will continue to grow with this year’s game.

For a look at the PC version of the game in action, check out the gameplay trailer above.
