We began working on this game over five years ago. It’s hard to describe the immense pressure of following up the first game. We know how much you love this world and its characters — especially Ellie and Joel. Believe me, we’re fans as well. We love them. Which is why we spent years crafting a game that we feel will do them justice, telling a nuanced story that deals with the core question: how far would you go to exact justice against the people that hurt the ones you love? It’s a highly emotional story with complex themes that befit the world of The Last of Us. What we realized pretty early on is that we were putting together Naughty Dog’s most ambitious and longest game in our 35 year history. To tell this kind of story the game needed to be massive. Without spoiling too much, at the top of this post you can watch the brand-new trailer that we debuted earlier today on State of Play, which just scratches the surface of what the game has in store.

Also, the media played around 3 hours of the game. We're getting proper gameplay footage on Thursday. Can't wait for Outbreak day!

Today, journalists from all over the world are going hands-on with two new levels at a press event in Los Angeles–playing roughly three hours of the game! Thankfully, you won’t have to wait long to see and hear more about it. Their impressions and videos will be going live this Thursday, September 26 around 8:00am PT, or, as many fans of The Last of Us know it: Outbreak Day.

I dont think I have ever been this hyped and excited for a game. For me, TLOU is probably the best game I have ever played and the sequel looks even more dope. I never had a doubt about Joel's return but I was always of the opinion that his entry would catch everyone by surprise just like god of war surprised everyone with Kratos's return to Blades of Chaos. Great to see Joel again though.

Also THE GAME IS ON 2 BLUE-RAYS !!!!! How much stuff are they putting in the game lol. The last game on 2 Blue rays was RDR and that game was fucking huge (and fantastic). FEB 20 cant come soon enough......

We know already the game will have some kind of flashback or side-event scenario based on the 2017 trailer.

Heavily rumored this is supposed to be Ellie's mom and takes place closer to when the outbreak started:

Maybe this will be the start of the game like Sarah's segment in TLoU 1.

That friction is something that's likely going to be worked through more thoroughly in Ellie's tale of revenge, though it already gives the encounters a defining edge. These are grisly, powerful and emotionally charged things, and a neat reminder that, beyond the hype and expectation placed around so much of The Last of Us Part 2, there's a sturdy little video game that's had some thoughtful tweaks. And it suggests that, even with the weight of expectation on the studio's shoulders, you certainly can teach a Naughty Dog new tricks.

Some crafting items will be locked behind the upgrade menu. As with the first game, Ellie finds pills throughout the environment, which she can use to upgrade her skills. I used some pills to allow Ellie to crawl faster and gain a larger boost from health packs, but you probably won’t find enough pills to upgrade Ellie completely. In fact, at one point, I found a hunting magazine that unlocked an entirely new upgrade branch filled with things like reduced weapon sway and faster movement speed while aiming. So, it’s possible that some players won’t even unlock or discover certain upgrades during their playthrough.

It turns out that The Last of Us Part 2 actually won't have a multiplayer mode, contrary to reports last year saying otherwise. At an event earlier this week, Naughty Dog Lead Game Designer Emilia Schatz confirmed the lack of multiplayer in an interview with USgamer. In a follow-up after the event, Sony re-confirmed the news.

"We're focusing on a single-player experience, so we're just making a single-player game for this," Schatz said during the event when asked about what sort of form the previously-confirmed multiplayer mode would take. "Correct, it is a single player game," a Sony representative subsequently clarified over email.

The lack of multiplayer is extremely disappointing for me. My hype for the game went down a notch.

This interview suggests there probably will be a standalone multiplayer release later on.
