The Gotham Knights TV series, from writers/producers of Batwoman, is getting closer to becoming a reality as The CW gives it a pilot order.

The CW is officially moving forward with Gotham Knights, a new series from the producers of Batwoman that just got a pilot order. Pilot season is fully underway as network executives begin to look at new programming to add to their line-ups. For The CW, it is becoming a tradition to continue adding a new DC Comics drama pretty much every season. As other Arrowverse shows get closer to their inevitable conclusions, the network is not wasting any time finding new characters to bring to the screen from the DC Universe.

In late 2021, The CW revealed that they were developing a Gotham Knights series. From Batwoman's Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, and Natalie Abrams, Gotham Knights would revolve around Bruce Wayne's rebellious adopted son as he bands together with the children of Batman's villains when they get framed for the Dark Knight's murder. The team must band together to clear their names while also becoming Gotham's new protectors. Despite coming from the Batwoman team, the project is not being eyed as a spinoff, but rather a standalone drama.

Almost three months after its initial announcement, The CW, which is currently reportedly up for sale, has officially given Gotham Knights a pilot order, with Fiveash, Stoteraux as executive producers and Abrams attached as co-executive producer. Greg Berlanti, who is the Arrowverse mastermind, is also executive producing alongside Berlanti Productions' Sarah Schechter and David Madden. According to The Wrap, Danny Cannon, from Gotham, Pennyworth, will both direct and executive produce the pilot. The announcement did not come with any further character details, which will probably be revealed once casting gets underway.

While it's not shocking that The CW greenlit another DC drama, the Gotham Knights project has an odd timing. The network already has a Gotham City-based drama with Batwoman that has been delving deeper into Batman's villains throughout the third season. Having two Bat-centric shows at the same time could possibly be too much of a good thing. Then there is also the notion that Warner Bros. is putting out yet another Bat-series, but without the Dark Knight himself. While Batwoman has Warren Christie as Earth-Prime's Caped Crusader, The CW can't fully use him due to the studio's film division favoring the character for the big screen.

With Bruce being dead in this story, it's almost definitely taking place in a separate continuity, which once against expands the Arrowverse Multiverse. This would make Gotham Knights the latest DC TV show on The CW to exist outside of Earth-Prime. With Stargirl taking place on Earth-2 while Naomi is on an unspecified Earth, it's somewhat counter-productive to what they accomplished with Crisis on Infinite Earths by merging almost all the shows into the same world. What made the Arrowverse's original era was that each show that came after Arrow was unique and had its own tone, hence the franchise's massive popularity. However, that doesn't mean that Gotham Knights doesn't have potential, and time will tell as fans will have to wait for the first piece of casting details to roll out.
