[h=2]Nintendo’s fighting game is back ... with Splatoon fighters![/h]

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch is coming this year, Nintendo announced today. Nintendo revealed the Switch version of the game during today’s Nintendo Direct.
The Switch version of Super Smash Bros. will be released this year and apparently includes the squid kids from Splatoon. Otherwise, Nintendo was light on details. In a news release, the company referred to the title as Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros. and noted that “recognizable faces like Mario, Link and the Inklings from the Splatoon series” appear in the teaser, which is posted above.
Of course, the Switch version’s biggest appeal is the ability to play Smash Bros. anytime, anywhere, so whatever else Nintendo has planned is pretty much gravy.
Nintendo has released four games in the Smash franchise so far, starting with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64. The series continues to have a dedicated following, withSuper Smash Bros. Melee for GameCube and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U appearing at this year’s Evo fighting game tournament.

[h=1]Super Smash Bros. director says he’s returning for Switch sequel[/h]

[h=2]Please take care of yourself, Sakurai[/h]

Masahiro Sakurai, the longtime director of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, announced on Twitter that he’ll be back for the game’s upcoming Switch entry. But considering how production on the last game physically affected the tireless developer — as he’s openly discussed multiple times — it’s surprising to hear that he’s planning to return.
“Right now we’re just at the stage where we revealed this game, but I’ve been working on this game in silence day after day,” Sakurai tweeted, according to a translation from fan siteSourceGaming. “Please wait until we can release more information, or until release day!”
It’s unknown in what capacity Sakurai is working on the Switch version of Smash Bros.; Nintendo told Polygon it has no comment. Whatever his role may be, there are reasons to be concerned for how his involvement may affect his health.
Following the release ofSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, Sakurai famously opened up in interviews and his frequent Famitsu columns about just how taxing development on those games was.
“You could say that all the effort in the past to stretch out, keep pushing myself, and provide all these extra merits wound up tightening the noose around my neck in the future,” Sakurai told Game Informer in the months after the release of Smash Bros. on Wii U.
That’s a dramatic way of describing working on a game, but considering Sakurai said he was doing the work of multiple people all on his own, it makes sense that he felt at the end of his rope with the Smash Bros. franchise.
It didn’t help that he also began to suffer from a serious physical condition as he worked on the fourth Smash Bros. In a regular Famitsu column, he described suffering from shoulder pains and joint inflammation that made it hard for him to use a controller or a mouse, especially to do things that required furious clicking. With Smash Bros. so reliant on button-mashing, these symptoms made things way more complicated for the workaholic.
But Sakurai also maintained in his Game Informer interview that he has an inability to just give up on something he feels committed to — even if his work on the Smash Bros. franchise has become increasingly debilitating.
“I also have trouble picturing someone else taking my place and providing all this value-added content without me,” he said.
Whether Sakurai is simply consulting or back in the director’s chair, here’s hoping that he’ll take better care of himself this time around. Super Smash Bros. for Switch is expected to launch in 2018.

[h=1]This Super Smash Bros. concept for ‘LaboMan’ is great[/h]
[h=2]An adorable creature with the blank stare of a true killer[/h]

Nintendo Labo, the do-it-yourself cardboard kits for the Nintendo Switch, isn’t due out until April 20, but that hasn’t stopped one talented animator from creating an amazing concept for a new character in Super Smash Bros.
Since Nintendo hasn’t said much at all about the new Super Smash Bros. for Switch, fans have started to fill in the blanks. Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to introduce you to LaboMan.

Twitter Ads info and privacy

He’s the creation of Javed L. Sterritt, a YouTuber out of Australia. People seem to be pretty keen on the little guy.
LaboMan, as envisioned by Sterritt, is a speedy little critter and attacks by slinging a Joy-Con at his adversaries. For an ultimate attack, Sterritt has him turn into the Labo piano in order to smash his enemies flat. Since Nintendo’s Labo system allows for a lot of creative leeway — users can make cardboard creations like robot suits, motorbikes and fishing rods — a theoretical LaboMan would have a wide variety of fighting moves at his disposal.
Our little cardboard friend was first seen in the Labo announcement trailer in January. The character was shown as part of a tease of the Labo’s Toy-Con Garage, a simple programming interface that will let players make their own custom Labo toys.

Nintendo
The timing of Sterritt’s idea is right, considering that the Nintendo Switch version of Super Smash Bros. was just announced a few weeks ago. It’s scheduled to be released later this year and, according to Nintendo, will include, “recognizable faces like Mario, Link and the Inklings from the Splatoonseries.”
And hopefully LaboMan.

[h=1]Everyone’s in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ... except Waluigi[/h]

[h=2]Nintendo absolutely killed it this year[/h]

Good news: Literally every character that was ever playable in every Smash game ever is going to be in the new Smash Bros title, coming out this December. Even better news: Some highly anticipated characters (Daisy! Inklings! RIDLEY!) are going to be making their Smash debuts in the new game.
But with every piece of joyous news comes a hidden dark side.
Even with this amazing Smash roster, and Nintendo’s reminder that “everyone is here!”, there is a shadow hanging over us all.
Waluigi — meme icon, tennis hero and fan-favorite — will not be joining his comrades in the newest Smash title.
The internet is in mourning. Rightfully so, as Waluigi has blessed us with plenty of meme content and gif-able moments in his time. The cheery echo of “Everyone is here!” rings sadly when it is clear that no, not everyone is.

Waluigi will make an appearance in this new Smash title, however ... but only as a lowly assist trophy.

Not only was Waluigi de-confirmed but they disrespect him as they do it.

If internet clamor brought Ridley to Smash, then perhaps it could bring this meme icon to the franchise one day, giving Waluigi the spotlight that he deserves.

But hey, at least we haveMario Tennis Aces to tide us over with sweet, sweet Walu-content.
If you’re still interested, even though Waluigi isn’t in it, Super Smash Bros Ultimate comes out Dec. 7 on Nintendo Switch.

[h=1]David Hayter returns as voice of Solid Snake in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[/h]

[h=2]The OG returns[/h]

The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announcement came with the best piece of character news: Literally every previous playable character is returning to the franchise. With such a large Smash roster comes the return of some fan-favorites, notably Metal Gear’s Solid Snake, who appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but not its Wii U/3DS sequel.
And with the return of Solid Snake comes the return of longtime voice actor David Hayter, who voiced Solid Snake in almost every Metal Gear Solid game. In Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, Hayter was replaced by actor Kiefer Sutherland. Hayter hasn’t hidden his disappointment in being replaced and has said that if it were up to him, he’d “do this role forever.”
Fans were wondering who the voice of Solid Snake would be in the latest Smash Bros installment, since Solid Snake was voiced by Hayter in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Hayter retweeted a mention, revealing he’s returning to the role.

It’s been 10 years since Solid Snake was in a Smash game and eight years since Hayter voiced him. Fans are ecstatic about the return of both. Hopefully, Snake has a bevy of new codec recordings in store for Ultimate’s massive 64-fighter roster.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is coming to Nintendo Switch on Dec. 7.

[h=1]Dark Samus is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an echo fighter[/h]

[h=2]Dark Samus looks completely different, but will play just like Samus[/h]

Dark Samus is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an echo fighter, Nintendo announced today during the company’s Smash focused Nintendo Direct.
Dark Samus first appeared with a cameo in Metroid Prime, but became an integral part of the series as one of the primary antagonists in the Metroid Prime series.

Just like the other echo fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Dark Samus will use Samus as a baseline for all of her abilities, and will essentially be the exact same fighter. She will, however, also use new animations and particles for things like missiles. This isn’t the only announcement Nintendo made today. The company also noted that Castlevania’s Simon Belmont would be joining the cast of characters.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the fifth game in Nintendo’s popular fighting game series which dates back to 1999. It’s the first game in the series to be released on Nintendo Switchand will be out on Dec. 7, 2018.

[h=1]Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will include 103 stages, stage morph feature[/h]

[h=2]Get ready for battles that move across multiple stages[/h]

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game director Masahiro Sakurai announced a series of new additions to the upcoming title during today’s Nintendo Direct, and one of the standout features is the huge number of stages that will be in the game.
There will be 103 stages in total, arranged in the order in which they were introduced in the series. We were also shown our first glimpse of the New Donk City stage, inspired by Super Mario Odyssey.
Another new feature is something Nintendo calls “stage morph,” which allows battles to span between different stages. You begin on one stage, there is a shifting effect onscreen, and suddenly you’re fighting in a whole new environment. This is a feature you’ll have to enable yourself, however, since it sounds like the default will be to have it disabled.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a Nintendo Switch exclusive that will be released on Dec. 7, 2018. You can read our comprehensive look at everything you should know about the game if you need to catch up; this is going to be a big release.

[h=1]Donkey Kong villain King K. Rool is in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[/h]

[h=2]The Donkey Kong villain makes his debut Smash Bros. appearance[/h]

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. will introduce another Donkey Kong character to the game. King K. Rool, a long-time enemy of D.K. and his simian dudes, enters the fray for the first time.
During today’s Super Smash Bros.-centric Nintendo Direct, the company announced two new characters, including Simon Belmont and his echo fighter, Richter, before ending the presentation with King K. Rool. Donkey Kong fans have wanted another rep from the franchise for some time — and K. Rool in particular. He first appeared in Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo, a series where he continued to be the main villain.

The Kremling king looks like an alligator, but he’s ... a Kremling, obviously. He’s also a fan of bananas, which is a big reason why he’s so anti-Donkey Kong and company. K. Rool isn’t the most threatening guy — no offense intended — and that may be why his intro teaser compared him to Kirby’s antagonist, King Dedede. Still, we love both of these royals all the same.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is heading to Nintendo Switch on Dec. 7. The game will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch, and marks the fifth unique entry in Nintendo’s crossover fighting series. For more on the game, check out our post on everything we know — at least, for now.

[h=1]Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features some new gameplay modes[/h]

[h=2]From Squad Strike to Tourney to Classic — and more[/h]

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is coming to Nintendo Switch on Dec. 7, and though the character roster is more impressive than ever, that’s not the only new feature coming to the franchise. Ultimate will feature a host of new modes to make gameplay more versatile and exciting.
The Squad Strike battle mode is a 5-on-5 or 3-on-3 elimination-style battle, where each player uses five (or three!) consecutive fighters in a battle to decided the winner. But multiple players can also take turns.
Tourney mode will allow players to input up to 32 participants and generate a tournament bracket, perfect for large Smash gatherings.
Smashdown mode makes the selected characters from the previous battle unavailable, so players must chose a new fighter for the next round. Versatile players who play many different characters will have a chance to excel.
A new Training mode features an exclusive stage with a grid that displays launch distance and trajectory depending on damage. Fighters’ weights are factored in at moment of impact.
And of course, Classic mode, the single-player campaign where fighters go against a specific set of opponents and stages, will return.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be out Dec. 7.

[h=1]Smash Bros. fan uncovers what Ultimate’s ‘mysterious mode’ is called[/h]

[h=2]Raises speculation about SSB Ultimate’s single-player mode[/h]

Last week’s Nintendo Direct presentation dumped a ton of news about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including the reveal of new fighters Simon Belmont and Richter from Castlevania,King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country, Chrom from Fire Emblem and Dark Samus from Metroid. It also included a tease of content to come: a “mysterious mode” that’s apparently important enough to be included in the Switch game’s main menu.
Thanks to some digital reconstruction by a Smash fan on Twitter, we might know what that mode is called: “Spirits.”
Shortly after the Nintendo Direct ended, Twitter user “l’attardé” pieced together the pixelated portion of the menu screen, which game director Masahiro Sakurai said he “can’t talk about ... just yet.” In both English and Japanese, the green menu portion of the screen appears to read “Spirits.”

Replying to @noctulescent

in the japanese trailer, it's also visible, and it says スピリッツ which is the english word "spirits" in katakana ; not the word for spirit in japanese. pic.twitter.com/qatIqGLkde

Twitter Ads info and privacy

Speculation about what the Spirits mode might be centers on what Nintendo and Sakurai have shown to date, namely that Luigi’s spirit is sliced out of his body by Castlevania’s version of Death. And since Mario and Mega Man appear to have been straight-up murderedby Ridley in a previous trailer for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, fans are wondering how the spirits of these characters might come into play in a possible single-player mode, a la Adventure Mode and Subspace Emissary from previous Smash Bros. games.
Last week’s Nintendo Direct also hinted at the appearance of Castlevania’s Dracula inUltimate, with Sakurai saying that the conditions under which he’ll appear are still under wraps.
Since Sakurai said he plans to reveal much more about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including its full roster, prior to the release of the game on Dec. 7, we’ll know more soon.

[h=1]Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s next character is Isabelle from Animal Crossing[/h]

[h=2]She joins a cast of more than 70 this December[/h]

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s newest character is Isabelle, the mayoral assistant shih tzu from 2013’s Animal Crossing: New Leaf. She was announced during today’s Nintendo Direct.
Isabelle is the ninth all-new character who will join a roster comprising every fighter who has ever appeared in the Smash Bros. series over its 20-year history. That’s more than 70 characters, meaning the number of totally new stars in Ultimate will be smaller than those who debuted in Melee (14), Brawl (18) and Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS (24).
Isabelle previously appeared in Smash as an assist trophy character in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS. Here she is in action:

NintendoDaisy, Chrom from Fire Emblem, Dark Samus and Ridley from Metroid, the Inklings from Splatoon, King K. Rool from Donkey Kong and Richter and Simon from Castlevania are the eight previously announced characters who will make their first appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will launch on Nintendo Switch on Dec. 7. This explainer has everything we know about the series’ Switch debut. As for Animal Crossing’s own Switch entry? That’s coming next year.

[h=1]Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Spirits Mode adds tons more characters to the game[/h]

[h=2]This is the reason all of our faves are ‘dead’[/h]

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s newest feature is called Spirits Mode, Nintendo announced during today’s Direct dedicated to the upcoming Switch game.
Spirits are power-ups based on other characters from many of the series represented in the game. There are primary spirits, which can include anything from Cappy of Super Mario Odyssey to Rogue from Sonic the Hedgehog to Hal “Otakon” Emmerich of Metal Gear Solid. Only one primary spirit can be assigned to a player at one time.
Following those are support spirits, which primary spirits have additional slots for. Multiple support spirits can be attached to primary spirits for additional boosts. If a Gooey primary is chosen, for example, then players can add three more supports to it; it has enough slots for those.
Spirits join alongside the fighter on the battlefield, much like assist trophies do. But unlike assist trophies, they don’t require an item to unlock. Instead, they create unique conditions from the beginning of the game that are useful for different types of fights. Bullet Bill adds plenty of items all over the field when it’s live, for example, and transforms the player into the Mario enemy.
Unlocking the spirits requires fighting them off during a specific battle, a Spirit Battle. Following that is a special roulette-style challenge to actually grab them for your party. You can also summon them by combining spirits when they level up post-battle; these are called cores.

NintendoEach spirit also has a special type, one of three types. There’s attack, grab, and shield. It’s a traditional type circle, with one at an advantage or disadvantage against the other.
Other things that spirits can do is take part in their own training missions, which grants treasures to the player. This happens even while the game is idle, which is a unique feature. More battle-specific: They help fill up the final smash meter when they’re active.
“The spirit system let’s you simulate battles with characters from more series than ever before,” Nintendo explained during the presentation. This is essentially a way to add way more fighters, even if they’re not playable. The whole thing is very RPG-inspired, which fits in perfectly with the wild World of Light story mode that the spirits factor into.
This comes as no surprise to anyone paying close attention to each of the previous reveals. By close, we mean incredibly close; in August, fans analyzed a screenshot of the game’s main menu and were able to parse one of the obscured options. It appeared to say Spirits Mode, which Nintendo has now confirmed.
Today’s 40-minute Nintendo Direct, the last before launch, gave us all the pre-release details we’re gonna get. Check out our explainer about everything we know thus far. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will launch on Switch on Dec. 7.

[h=1]Smash World is a free Super Smash Bros. Ultimate social app launching in 2019[/h]

[h=2]Smash World will let Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players share their best and worst fights.[/h]

During today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct, the publisher announced Smash World, a supplementary service for the upcoming fighting game. Smash World will be accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online app on smartphones and tablets.
Unlike many apps for competitive multiplayer games, the app won’t focus on displaying win/loss records. Instead, the service will allow players to upload and view gameplay videos. Other features of the service have not been announced, but Nintendo says Smash World will receive updates post-launch.
Players will also be able to use the Nintendo Online app to talk both while competing and as a spectator. Smash World will be available in 2019 as a free service. To learn more, read everything we know about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate so far.

[h=1]Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s post-launch plans include Pikachu, Eevee spirits[/h]

[h=2]Let’s go, more collectibles![/h]

The Pokémon Company revealed that Pikachu and Eevee are coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — that is, spirits based on the characters and their Let’s Go! designs. Collectible power-ups inspired by the mascots will begin showing up in the game’s Spirit Board rotation starting next week.
The Japanese Pokémon Twitter account confirmed that the Pikachu and Eevee spirits will arrive Dec. 14, but they won’t be accessible to all players that day. Instead, only those with save data from Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! will receive the spirit analogous to their saves. They’ll get one automatically, as opposed to everyone else, who will have to cross their fingers for Pikachu and Eevee while playing the Spirit Board lottery.

A release date for their wider availability is unknown. This is a good sign that Nintendo’s post-launch content will be diverse, however — and also a reminder that a character’s appearance as a spirit doesn’t mean they can’t appear as a playable character down the road.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches on Switch Dec. 7, while Pokémon: Let’s Go! is out now.

[h=1]Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to add Persona 5’s Joker as DLC[/h]

[h=2]A new trailer at the Game Awards showed off the fighting styles of a new fighter[/h]

At the Game Awards 2018, Nintendo revealed what’s next for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Joker from Persona 5 will join the roster sometime next year as the game’s 76th fighter, a new trailer revealed. The protagonist of one of last year’s best RPGs will be among the first fighters to be available as DLC.
Joker is the name of the Phantom Thief lead of Persona 5. Players can choose his civilian name, but he and the rest of his teen crew switch to using these codenames — and their very good costumes — when they enter various realms to help solve some serious existential mysteries and crimes. Persona 5 is only playable on PlayStation consoles, making this the character and game’s first appearance on Switch.
Joker will be available to purchase individually, but he’ll also come as part of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass. This will include five different bundles, each including a fighter, stage and music. The entire pass will run players $24.99.
Players should likely expect the first DLC pack for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to come out early next year, after the release of Piranha Plant — a fighter who’ll be gifted to the game’s early adopters, although we’ll have the option to buy him if we miss that initial window.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be released tomorrow, Dec. 7, for Nintendo Switch.
