NOTE: This is just to help starters get an idea, don't take all of this info for granted as there may be errors. And this is just a novice's guide to studying in Malaysia with no first hand experience whatsoever, only research on the internet.

Guide to applying for universities in Malaysia:

General info:

One of the better places to study in Asia along with China and Singapore. Population of about 28million, 60% local, about 20% Chinese, 7% Indian and the rest from various countries. Its divided into two portions, Eastern Malaysia out at sea and the Peninsula which is connected to dry land through Thailand, Brunei etc.

Why Malaysia?

Spoiler: show
It's probably not the most obvious choice when it comes to studying abroad, most people would prefer going to the US, UK or Australia but if you're going there, you're looking at a MINIMUM of 20lakhs or above. Then there's the lack of job opportunities for those going to the UK. Other than the financial side, Malaysia's a muslim country and it would have a more homely feel than going Europe or America. The climate's more bearable aswell.

Ok so what options do I have?

Spoiler: show

If you're aiming on studying abroad, you'd obviously want to get into the best universities you can. Here's a list of universities you might want to apply to:

Universities by World Ranking: (Rankings Source) (You can also use THIS and THIS)

No. 167 University of Malaya (Overview) (Official Website)
No. 279 University Kebangsaan Malaysia (Overview) (Official Website)
No. 335 University Sains (Science) Malaysia (Overview) (Official Website)
No. 358 University Putra Malaysia (Official Website)
No. 4xx University Teknologi Malaysia (Overview) (Official Website)

International Universities Based in Malaysia:

There are two universities based in Malaysia, one from the UK and one from Australia:

No. 74 University of Nottingham (Official Website) (Wikipedia)
No. 60 Monash University (Official Website) (Wikipedia)

How much will it cost?

Spoiler: show
The Malaysian currency, the Ringgit is worth 29PKR as of now. Tuition fees for undergraduate programmes ranges between 18-40,000 Ringgit depending on where you study with the Malaysian institutes being cheaper and the Internatianal Universities on the higher end. For Post-Graduate courses and specific fees for each university, check their website.

While it's obvious, you're not making a substantial saving in tuition fees SPECIALLY if you go to Nottingham or Monash (their fees compared to their campuses in Perth and Nottingham are about 10-30% less at most), Malaysia is really cheap to live in. For a single student, about 1000 Ringgit is enough on a monthly basis not including accommodation.

Application Process and Entry Requirements:

Spoiler: show
Entry requirements vary depending on what qualifications you have. Assuming you're giving your CIE's, BBB would get you admissions into most places. As for the application process, that again depends on the institution but there is no central body that you have to go through such as UCAS (UK) or ATAR (AUS).

Misc.

A little changes in the Fee structure of UK universities.
My whole family has also applied for UK and as I am 18 years old, they are considering me as an individual person. So all of my documents and processing is a bit lengthy than most of my family members. About the fee you mentioned, well according to my Agent and he is well over in this business for over 10 years, told me that the Average fee is Up to £9k depending on which state you go. That you mentioned right but for Pakistanis like us, the 10-16000 figure is incorrect. There are two scenarios
  • You decide to stay in university Hostel
  • You devide to live in a separate apartment or flat of your own
You hardly need 2-3000 maximum if you are living in your own flat and that costs comes down further more if you decide to stay in Hostel.
I am not here to pin point the mistakes, just sharing what I know so that you can make your guide better.

the cost of studying in UK varies from 9k-18k pounds per year....whereas i partly agree on the second point that you raised....the living expenses do vary.....accommodation in central london will be much more expensive than that in warwick ??? dont u agree...

this is a overlook of the fee structure of uni's in uk for 2009/10....it is absurd to even think tht the fee would have dropped....the fee has actually increased....since pakistani students who want to study in the uk wont go for universities down the pecking order....u should see that the fee for all of the good colleges is above 9-10k

Damn the prices really went up in about 6 months :| . Last time I was told that Kings College has 11000 per year and he even showed me the fee structure. Same goes to Bedfordshire. It was around 6500. These two institutes are the ones that most of the students go from Pakistan. The guy even told me that if you go to bedfordshire, the most people you will see will be from pakistan and majority will be pathans :D

the fee structure i posted was of 2009/2010

hmmm ....the minimum fee for international students is 9000 pounds(increases as the rep of the uni increases)....

since this new govt came in action in the U.K...they have taken drastic measures....Ucas has reported a 8.97 % drop in the overseas applications this year.
the fee structure for the 2010-2011 section is:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/oct/12/tuition-fees-universities

but if u see closely....any university which is worth mentioning charges 10000 pounds - 20000 pounds per year

ill add this link to the opening post so that everyone can see the proper fee structure in the U.K

and about those two institutions....nowadays many boys are into engineering, accounting and finance etc.... and obviously you know that degree from Warwick,LSE,UCL, Imperial college london or any top notch university stands out for itself .....thus the fee is high.....students are aware now that to get good jobs in the future they will need degrees from reputed universities.

The only resource I can tell you is the Agency Guy.
That guy held meetings with me for like 1 hour a day for every step I take towards the processing of my VISA application. In this time, he showed me a lot of things from which i mentioned a few above. And why he told me all of these because the UK governing body considers every person above 18 to bear his own expenditures. That is why he gave me all the suggestions with proofs.

ive been through the same....i applied to U.K almost a year ago...my consultant messed things up so i couldnt go...so i know what you were talking about. anyways thanks for your suggestion.
:)

I didn't mean to offend you or call your information invalid.I just defended the information I wrote. You helped me correct one thing though. When i said 10k-16k i should have wrote that good/great uni's charge that kind of fee.The fee does vary alot.

all of you are like my brothers.:D

@tech reaper....looks at this.you stated that someone showed king college london's fee structure to you and it was 11000 pounds .....
http://www.kcl.ac.uk/study/ug/funding/fees/overseas.aspx

i hope whoever that was ,wasn't misleading you.. :)

if you see Bedfordshire you will see the same type of increase in the fee:

The sole purpose of this thread is to help people with education related matters and just point out what to do.

Consultation was never intended. Yes! I mean it.

Ashhad has already put in enough efforts. We can't more from him lest you're paying him!

You can say world recognized but theres also a difference in them, if you graduate from say Imperial College London, nd one guy does from some top notch uni in germany, theres a hell lot of a difference, uk is expensive nd they dont give you that visa but their degree has unparallel value.
Getting in UCL and Imperial Collage isnt really as easy as you are making it sound... yaar is tarha tu US ki Ivy league unis ka muqabla nahi.. UK degrees are over hyped(esp since we knw their language and their culture we are fascinated by it)..plus their market is saturated, hardly any jobs open up, and the ones that do they prefer uk nationals.
Germany (atleast for engineers )is very promising plus very cheap compared to other markets. Alot of top notch universities and a decent amount of manufacturing firms are in Germany. Their unis are well respected throughout the world, since we are oblivious to their existence, we don't regard them as high as other nations do.

Fantastic thread. Great sorts of help.

One question, what's the worth of SAT for Australia? I heard that it's better to do SAT, especially if you're going for business/accounts & commerce. Oh and this is for undergraduates.

I agree with you...just think about it like this....both countries have good institutions and one is good for some courses and the other is good for some.

now if send 2 students for automotive engineering ....one to the UK and one to Germany....the one in Germany is likely to land a fabulous job after completing his degree....Uk has some great institutions but you need real deep pockets to study there where as Germany has great institutions and isn't that much expensive :)

ohh and nowadays i hear kids saying that its easy to get into Imperial,UCL,LSE etc (top notch universities).Well I just want to say that they are taking these universities way to easy....a student's admission into these fine institutions is not only based on academics, they want extra curricular activities, internships,a solid personal statement etc and believe me when i say this-- getting into these universities is not easy.Students should stop taking these uni's lightly.
