Overview

A cool looking slider phone in all black color (like almost all Samsung phones). Also comes in Silver color. With stylishly carved Navigation and Menu buttons and phone body. The MicroSD slot and Earphone / Data Cable / Charger slot are both capped which can be conveniently opened. The keys are easy to handle and nicely separated. The numerical keys are all separate which is essentially the ideal design and most convenient. The phone is normally sized and not very thick, like some slider phones. The phones also weighs normally, not too heavy and not too light either. The phone is very traditionally Samsung with all the trademark cuts and curves.

Processing

The phone is very fast, and I never experienced the slightest lag in doing anything on the phone.

Calling

The reception through the earpiece is very good. Voice is crisp and clear and volume is high as well. Although you can also receive or make calls with the slider closed but for optimal experience the phone should be slided open because the micr is situated near the numerical keys.

Calling through the handsfree is very convenient and the good quality earphones produce excellent voice. Microphone is also immaculately located and does its job perfectly.

The Loud Speaker is not great, but still very usable and does its job.

Deminsions

- Size:

99 x 50 x 13.9 mm

- Weight:

80 g

Features

VGA Camera with 4x Digital Zoom
MP3 Player
FM Radio
MPEG4 Video Player
Mobile Tracker

- Networks:

GSM 900
GSM 1800
GSM 1900

- Data:

GPRS - Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps
Bluetooth - v2.0 with Stereo A2DP Profile
USB
EDGE

Messaging

Sports the normal multi-stroke typing system, and lacks any T9 support. Besides T9, even the typing system is flawed as it never automatically switches to the "Abc" (first letter capital) format after a full stop. So it becomes quite irritating as you will have to keep switching the format everytime you start a new sentence.

Applications

Browser sports WAP 2.0 and xHTML is pretty standard.

Supports Java which means you can download applications and games as you like.

Other embedded applications like Calculator and Calendar do their job perfectly, there is nothing lacking. You can perform all the basic tasks in the calculator and manage all your schedules in the calendar.

You can have upto 6 different Alarms, which is probably more than enough.

Multimedia

- Camera

Camera is only VGA but the quality isnt as bad as found in other VGA camera phones. It is actually the best VGA camera I've come across. Even better than some 1.3 MP camera phones.

- Video Recording

Video recording is basic at QCIF - 176*144 resolution and is as it should be in accordance with the VGA camera.

- Video Player

Video Player is plain simple, doesnt allow fullscreen option but the screen is still large enough for the videos you'll record with the phone. Allows seeking both ways.

- FM Radio

FM Player is simple and easy to use, can Auto Scan and save channels. Can also rename channels as you wish. A capacity of 30 channels, which is again over adequate.

- MP3 Player

MP3 Player lacks any Equaliser or Presets. The sound quality output is good nevertheless. And the Player cannot be minimsed or run in background, which means your music listening will be interrupted everytime you would want to check your Message Inbox or reply or do anything else. Has the basic functions of Shuffle and Repeat (A, A-Z and All) and they work like a charm. You can have upto 4 different Playlists which can have upto 30 files each. The Player is also able to seek the MP3 files, both forwards and backwards. There are two colorful visualisations which run in a loop regardless of how the files play.

- Earphones

The Earphones make is high quality, with thick wiring and robust build and they produce good quality sound. The earphone is the normal old-skool shaped and the size is slightly large. Compared to a 100% in all categories for the K770i earphones(which are the best I know), the score is as follows:

Treble - 65%
Mids - 70%
Bass - 65%
Volume - 60%
Clarity - 80%
Overall Score - 70%

- External Speaker

The External Speaker is a little greater than good which is exceptional for an entry level multimedia phone. The volume is good is and sound isnt distorted at full volume. Rock, Pop, Hip-hop and RnB genres are easily enjoyable. Classical listening will be also be enjoyable provided the source volume is high enough. This is the same level of volume I found in the crappy Nokia 5310 Xpress Music phone, which is great for this phone. The quality is good, bass is produced in the mid-range so it is not distinct, treble is clear and normal and mids are comparatively slightly louder.

Bluetooth

Sports Bluetooth version 2.0 and also the A2DP Stereo Hheadset Profile. Works as it should. Data communication options are good, allows to hide the phone. File transfer is simple and works fine.

USB

Supports USB the file transfer through the Data Cable is quite slow and could take upto 30 minutes for about 300MB of songs.

Display

Has a large 2" TFT Screen with 128*160 resolution which unfortunately only suppports 65K colors. You can have your custom wallpapers here but the digital clock will always be on top with its grey transluscent outline stretching from left to right. There are only two themes, one suits the black color of the phone and comes pre-activated. All folders are black and pretty much everything else. Another is the white theme with colored Folders and Menu templates. You have the option to have your wallpaper displayed in the background of menus with customizable transparency.

Memory Expansion

Supports the latest and most common MicroSD memory card slot upto 2GB. Which is more than enough for a basic multimedia phone.

Battery

Talk Time is upto 5 hours. Has an approximate life of 6-7 hours* of music playback.

What's In The Box ?

- The Phone
- Battery
- Earphones
- Charger
- Manual

You'll have to buy the USB Data Cable and driver CD separately.

*Price: 6,000rs

Verdict:

Very good looking phone with a large screen. Excellent feature set, although has a few irritating quirks, like the MP3 minimize option and "Abc" flaw in Messaging department. All thr rest is just great and an excellent bang for the buck product for the amount I paid for it. But for current price you have other alternatives which might prove to pack more value than this phone. For example, Nokia 3110 Classic, Motorola L9, V3i or LG KP 220 or even Samsung E-200.

BANG FOR THE BUCK ?
Positive !

Pros:
- Awesome looking phone
- Sylish Slider and Keys
- Large Screen
- Good Feature Set
- High quality Earphones
- Good External Speaker
- Fast

Cons:
- MP3 Player doesnt run in background
- No Data Cable and Driver CD in bundle

FINAL RATING:
8/10

* Approximate Values. May Differ !

Can I overclock it?
J/K nice review man but don't know why I still prefer Nokia :S (specially I don't like sliders)
No need its fast like hell already :)

Thanks. If you dont like sliders then it pretty much kills Samsung for you right? because most of their nice looking phones are sliders. I like them a lot actually.

About Nokia, the only Nokia phone I have used in the mid-end range was Xpress Music 5310, and it really sucked. The only thing good about it was its battery time and the 3.5mm Earphone port. Its Camera and External speaker were freaking lame. But I dont know about other Nokia phones....

it's a good phone, My cousin has it, but I take it from him sometimes.

only flaw i found is that the slide is not that good. it gets loose eventually after 8 months :S

rest I'm satisfied, though headphones and music player needs improvement.
