Nintendo is reportedly working on an updated Nintendo Switch model to be released sometime in 2020, according to Taiwanese electronics newspaper DigiTimes.
DigiTimes reported the new Nintendo Switch model will be released in “mid-2020,” with production beginning “at the end of first-quarter 2020” — which is sometime around March. The news lines up with a previous report from Wall Street Journal technology reporter Takashi Mochizuki. Mochizuki reported in August that “Nintendo has ideas for further updates to the Switch lineup after those two models to make the platform’s lifecycle long.”
According to the DigiTimes report, Nintendo intends to release the new Switch model with a magnesium alloy body and an update to the CPU.
Mochizuki’s August report outlined Nintendo’s intention to release two new Nintendo Switch models — the updated Nintendo Switch with a better battery, and the handheld-only Nintendo Switch Lite, which were released in August and September, respectively.
There’s no concrete information regarding the potential upcoming model, but some are predicting Nintendo’s next console as a “Switch Pro” device. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of game industry consultancy Kantan Games, told GamesIndustry.biz “there’s no doubt in [his] mind that Nintendo will launch a ‘Switch Pro’ in 2020” — specifically, “after the summer holidays to counter the roll-out of the PS5 and next-gen Xbox later in the year.”
Toto suggested a retail price of $399, with “4K support, bigger cartridge sizes, and of course beefed-up components.”
Others are skeptical, however. IHS Markit Technology analyst Piers Harding-Rolls told GamesIndustry.biz that the likelihood of a Switch Pro device “has significantly diminished since the launch of an improved flagship Switch and the Switch Lite.” He also believes 2020 will be Nintendo’s best year for Switch hardware sales since its launch.
A Nintendo of America spokesperson told Polygon it “has nothing to announce on this topic.”
The original Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017, but the updated version with increased battery life began rolling out in August 2019. Since release, Nintendo’s been criticized for malfunctioning Switch controllers — “Joy-Con drift,” which is associated with analog sticks registering movement without player input. In 2019, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Nintendo of America over the Joy-Con malfunctions. An update filed in September 2019 added the Nintendo Switch Lite to the lawsuit, suggesting Nintendo had not improved the malfunctioning parts. For a while, Nintendo was offering to fix or replace problematic Joy-Cons.
Update: This post has been updated with a statement from a Nintendo of America spokesperson.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch Pro: Christmas 2020 Release Rumored To Lack Important Feature[/h]

The rumored Nintendo Switch Pro is supposedly on track for a Christmas 2020 release, but it's apparently missing one professional feature.

  • The Nintendo Switch Pro, or whatever Nintendo is planning on calling their next hardware revision, is rumored to launch near Christmas 2020, but new reports suggest it may be lacking a key modern feature.
The Nintendo Switch launched on March 3rd, 2017, and is now fast approaching its third anniversary. The console's already seen a Switch revision with improved battery life, and Nintendo dropped the portable-only Nintendo Switch Lite on September 20th, 2019. As the next-generation wave rolls in with the arrival of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later in 2020, Nintendo is facing strong pressure to update its home-portable hybrid machine to stand a little firmer in the face of fierce competition. The Nintendo Switch is already the most technically inferior device among the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and that gap will likely only widen with the next console generation

If and when the Nintendo Switch Pro releases this holiday season, rumors indicate that it will not support 4k resolution, a decidedly contemporary feature in today's age. Via Metro, a Korean source indicates that the Nintendo Switch Pro will forgo Nvidia's Tegra X1 (or newer) in favor of a custom processor designed in partnership between Nvidia and Nintendo. That new processor, according to the source, will not provide a major bump to the Nintendo Switch's graphical capabilities, and it definitely won't push the system to support 4k resolution.

Fans are obviously ready for an upgrade to Nintendo's killer Switch platform, but they may not get exactly what they're hoping for. The source goes on to indicate that the design phase of the processor isn't even entirely complete up to this point. They suggest that Nintendo may not be able to get the Nintendo Switch Pro ready for launch by the end of 2020. To be clear, Nintendo has not officially confirmed its intention to release a Nintendo Switch Pro.
Rumors have, of course, been ever-present thanks to the system's age and the future of the PlayStation and Xbox line. Nintendo has a history of being more affordable and graphically weaker than the Xbox and PlayStation platforms. The console maker places its emphasis on unique design and first-party software. It would be a little foolish to expect Nintendo to drop that approach after launching the Switch to such wonderful success. Remember, every piece of news about the Nintendo Switch Pro so far is an unconfirmed rumor. For now, the simplest course of action is to assume that, sure, Nintendo is working on something, but fans shouldn't place too much stock in tidbits like these until the company drops genuine information.

[h=1]Nintendo says it’s not planning to launch a new Switch model in 2020[/h]

Your wallet can rest easy, kind of

Nintendo will not be releasing a new iteration of the Nintendo Switch hardware this year, the company said Friday, laying to rest rumors about a so-called Switch Pro.
“Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020,” said Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa during a corporate management policy briefing for the first three quarters of the company’s current fiscal year.
Furukawa noted the success of the Nintendo Switch Lite — the handheld device’s form factor and price point helped the company “meet a wider range of consumer needs and expand the consumer base,” according to a slide from his presentation. But he added, “We feel that we have not yet fully communicated the special features and appeal of Nintendo Switch Lite, so we will continue to address this going forward.”
This means that while Nintendo may continue to release special versions of the existing Nintendo Switch models — like the sweet Animal Crossing: New Horizons console coming in March — it will not roll out a new version of the hardware outside of cosmetic differences.
So if you’re afraid that there might be a more powerful version of the Nintendo Switch coming out soon, don’t fret, since it won’t be happening this year, at least. The only thing you’ll have to worry about are any new swanky Nintendo Switch units with game-themed Joy-Cons and docks.
The Nintendo Switch Lite launched on Sept. 20, 2019, following the July debut of a revision of the Nintendo Switch with better battery life. The Switch recently topped 52 million units sold, surpassing the Super NES and quadrupling the sales of the Wii U.
Even though Nintendo is staying on the sidelines, it’s going to be a very busy holiday season this year with the launches of Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X.

The Switch Lite provides immense value imo. I had my doubts earlier until I saw one my self... I was recently travelling and the box packed version was easily available at 30K. I would have jumped in an instant if only the Lite was hackable :(
