Hey guys, quick question. After battling with PTCL for a while, they're switching me over from VDSL to GPON. They've already installed the equipment, I'm just waiting for the connection to be active. In the meantime, I asked them how much upload speed I'll receive on a 25mbps connection. To my surprise, they said about 13-15mbps.

Umm what? I was already getting 13mbps upload with 25 down on my VDSL connection. Shouldn't I be getting about 20mbps upload on GPON? Am I missing something here? What's the point of fiber? Lol.

25mbps packages give you 25Mbps. All other packages give you 75% of your bandwidth for uploads.

Fantastic. So when the exchange manager is telling me 15mbps, I'm not sure who on Earth I'm meant to fight with about this. Well, I guess I'll wait for the connection to be active first. Once it's active tonight, I'll know better. He gave me the impression that because I chose to keep the same phone number, I'm stuck with what they're offering me but for a higher price. Unbelievable.

How did you manage to convince them to convert your connection to gpon? I'm in the same situation What should I do? Already tried complaining on citizen portal, Twitter and helpline.

I got lucky and it wasn't a smooth process. I was upgraded to 25mbps a year ago when I switched to VDSL. For a year, everything was fine but as they added more customers to VDSL, their system tanked. Every time it rained or the system was strained, my internet disconnected. I complained repeatedly, went all the way up to the head office via citizen portal. I lucked out because the exchange next to mine set up GPON services (I live in Race Course which is literally joined at the hip with Westridge Rawalpindi). They spent months surveying to see how they could give me a connection and then finally transferred my number from the Cantt to the Westridge exchange along with transferring me to GPON.

Worth noting my dad has been a PTCL customer since the late 80s and we've been making some noise at the exchange. But I doubt they'd have switched me if I wasn't right next to a fiber cabinet. Their other option would have been to decrease my speed.
