Defining A Generation: The Last of Us & BioShock: Infinite - PakGamers​

So guys, I've done this comparison of the two. I think it's pretty much evident that they're the big epics of the year so far. A lot of time has passed since their releases, so discussing about them together seems just right now. And we want the community to have their say in this as well.

So what do you think of the two? Why are they special to you? Whatever you want to discuss relating to either of them, let's do it here.

I tried my best to keep minimum details of the plot in the article. Not trying to ruin somebody's experience. But still gotta care if you don't wanna know anything! lol

I've thought long and hard upon this, but can't come up with a straight answer. Both these games were equally amazing.

Bioshock Infinite: I loved Columbia. The atmosphere was amazing, the visuals were amazing, I even found the gameplay to be excellent. The game didn't bore me at all. Played it twice.
Elizabeth was fantastic and a great female protagonist. And finally, the game's story was mind blowing. A few things could have been improved here and there, that's my only complaint.

Last of Us: The first 15 minutes were great. Then the game got boring for about 2-3 hours. However, it redeemed itself after that and so I forgave it. Once again, great visuals, great atmosphere, great gameplay and a mindblowing story.
Ellie was as lovable as Elizabeth but I can't begin to compare the two since they're different characters, have a different age, are present in different times and different locations. They were each awesome in their own setting.

... That is a very tough question. I think I would shoot myself in the head and die instead of making a tough decision like that

Last of Us: The first 15 minutes were great. Then the game got boring for about 2-3 hours.

For me it was the exact opposite. lol

I found the intro alright. But as the game progressed to Fireflies/Tess' arch, I was hooked.

I played both games completely blind.

That is, I saw only one or two videos for both games but after that complete media blackout.

The funny thing is that you won't believe is that I didn't know Troy Baker voiced Joel until later in the game Joel's voice sounded extremely familiar and then I was like Holy Shit...

The gameplay, in the beginning, was just like any typical FPS shooter, but after you obtain Sky Hook, the real fun begins. Vigors in this game were a complete letdown and were like they were just forced into the game compared to the plasmids in BioShock 1, plasmids were like part of the main storyline whereas vigors were treated like a side thing.

BioShock: Infinite was awesome, way awesome with the plot and everything than any other game I played but it falls short in some areas compared to the first BioShock.

The villain, Comstock, although a superb structured plot and twists, the villain didn't have that kind of level and intimidation that Andrew Ryan had.

Yep, "Would you kindly..." and Ryan's style and intimidation were 100x times than the prophet of Columbia.

Many saw TLoU as a ripoff of The Walking Dead, with the same going to hell type plot and Lee and Clementine, adult + child combo. But if it were true then why would it get critical acclaim and such high praise?

Naughty Dog is epic in storytelling, everyone knows that duh, but this game provides and takes it up even higher, at times I was like WTF I didn't expect that. That small talk of Ellie and Joel, cracking jokes and everything is what makes this game brilliant.

It's like you're not even with an A.I character but a real life person. Ellie's observations, conversations and everything leads you to believe that nope...you didn't expect an A.I character to say/do that.

The A.I in this game is awesome, except for the mechanic where your A.I partner can't be detected or seen by the enemies, which is kind of a let down and it would have made the game more challenging.

But it doesn't stop there, TLoU did what RE or any other game these days couldn't, PROPER SURVIVAL HORROR. The decisions you have to make whether to use your bullet or shivs or not and how to approach a situation, whether stealthily or not is everything here.

The gameplay was great and enjoyable and if you guys head on to the TLoU MP thread in the PS Network section, you guys can see it for yourself that how awesome and engaging even the MP is with true to its SP roots survival theme.

Oh and I almost forgot, I found TLoU and BioShock: Infinite to bear some resemblance to each other, could be because of the talking A.I character and such? But at times I did feel like that.

Firstly, I would like to say, a very well written article @Ahmad498.

Well, these two games are definitely one of my favourite of this gen.

Bioshock Infinite: Loved its story, simply loved it. And that ENDING, WOW. Surpassed even the first Bioshock ending twist for me.

Aside from that, its opening was really good, going to Columbia, church singing etc. Columbia was a beautiful and awesome place. Soundtrack was also really great, especially the song "Will the circle be unbroken", so enthralling.

As for the characters, well Elizabeth is probably my favourite female game character, tied with Ellie. Booker was a good protagonist. I do wish that were some more conversations between them during the mid sections of the game when they were together.

The gameplay was fun, and got more fun as the game progressed but it did got somewhat tedious at some points and the pacing of the game suffered in the middle, got less interesting for a bit, but thankfully got right on its tracks soon after.



The Last Of Us: Well, the opening alone WOWED me like hell. I was not expecting that. The maturity and hopelessness you feel after the opening clearly indicated that this is gonna be a serious, mature game focused on relationship of characters.
The game was kinda slow after the opening, although the pace was picking up slowly. Once it was on full gears, it never stopped and the game just reached new heights.

The story telling in this game is unparalleled. I don't think I have played a game with this level of story telling. Naughty Dog deserves the utmost respect in this regard.
The way Joel and ellie relationship develops throughout the journey, changes in tone, attitude etc, it is just brilliant.

The main characters, Ellie and Joel, are the best duo I have ever witnessed in a game to date. They are just perfect.

Gameplay is really fun and feels like a proper survival game. A.I is pretty good too, especially humans, the way they react to different situations is awesome. There are the occasional goofs but that's forgiveable.

The only thing in this game that really bums me out is that our parter A.I is undetectable by the enemy, which kinda throws of the immersion feeling during encounters.



If I compare these two, I can easily say that The Last Of Us is the better game overall. It is one of the defining moment of this gen for me. And definitely GOTY so far.

From the trailers and all, it looked pretty good but when you actually get to see it and walk on it and explore it, its just something else entirely. Kudos to Irrational games.
