[h=1]No Man’s Sky’s latest update lets you hatch a spaceship[/h]

If you’ve ever wanted to fly around inside an organic sentient spaceship, now’s your chance

Image

If your dream is to fly around space in a sentient spaceship, then No Man’s Sky’s latest update perfect for you. The update adds a completely new variety of ship to the game called a Living Ship. These are are randomly generated biological creatures that happen to be able to carry you through space. Patch 2.3 also adds new missions, new types of NPCs, and several quality-of-life changes to the game.
Players will get to raise a Living Ship from scratch by visiting the Space Anomaly and collecting their very own Void Egg. This Void Egg will eventually hatch and grow into their very own Living Ship. This patch also adds a new series of missions, fittingly called Starbirth, which will shed light on the origin of the organic spaceships.
Along with the new way to travel through space, there are now Space NPCs that will hail you as you fly through the stars. According to the patch notes they’re often just merchants who want to show you their wares, but they might also be in need of assistance or even looking for a fight.
The patch also adds new Space Encounters, which can lead to the discovery of new objects, and even dangerous new lifeforms.
For a look at all of the additions in No Man’s Sky patch 2.3 you can find the full notes below.

[h=2]NO MAN’S SKY PATCH 2.3 NOTES[/h]Living Ships

 • Introduced a new style of starship, the Living Ship.
 • These ships have their own exclusive range of organic technologies and cannot be upgraded by conventional means.
 • Adjust your playstyle to the restrictions and benefits of these organic techs, or hatch and evolve new procedural upgrades to grow your own custom ship.
Missions

 • Incubate your Void Egg and learn about the origin of the Living Ships with a new mission chain, Starbirth.
 • Completing these missions will hatch the Void Egg into your own procedurally generated Living Ship.
 • Additional ships may be hatched from subsequently incubated eggs.
Space Encounters

 • While using the Pulse Engine to fly between planets, there is a chance of encountering strange objects in local space.
 • Drop out of pulse-flight to begin the encounter.
 • A large range of strange objects and exotic rewards await…
 • Different encounters have different chances of occurring based on the characteristics of the solar system.
Trader Hails

 • As well as strange objects, players may also encounter passing trader ships.
 • These will hail the player while using the Pulse Engine and may need assistance, offer to trade, and more ...
Quality of Life

 • If players are in a group but do not have a Nexus mission active, then when taking off from the Space Anomaly they can now choose to exit directly to the system of any other player in their group.
 • Fixed a number of issues that caused planetary charts and others scans to pick from too narrow a range of buildings. Players should no longer be sent repeatedly to the same building when using multiple charts.
 • Fixed an issue that caused distress signals to occasionally lead to a crashed ship site with no crashed ship.
 • Added an instant split button to allow players to quickly divide stacks of items in half.
 • Players can now hold down buttons to increase or decrease stack sizes, rather than having to press repeatedly.
 • Fixed an issue that prevented the Exocraft Summoning Station from working if placed within a base.
 • Improved the range of the Exocraft Summoning Station, so that it allows Exocraft to be summoned from anywhere in the system.
 • Planets that you have discovered no longer need to be repeatedly rescanned to see their resources from space.
 • Fixed an issue that caused the planetary resources popup to flicker while pulsing towards a planet.
 • Fixed an issue that made it difficult to enter Space Stations from tight angles.
 • Allowed starships to reverse during atmospheric flight if stuck in other geometry.
 • The automatic Launch System Recharger now functions while the player is sitting in the cockpit, if the ship is landed.
 • Improved VR swimming controls for VR devices that use thumbsticks.
 • Significantly increased the distance players are able to move the camera in Photo Mode.
Optimizations

 • Introduced a number of significant GPU optimizations to terrain rendering.

[h=1]Mech added to No Man’s Sky for exploration and combat[/h]

It’s called the Minotaur, and it’s part of a free update

Hello Games keeps rolling out free content for No Man’s Sky. The latest is a giant mech suit that players can build for exploration and combat. It’s called the Minotaur, and it’s live right now, part of the Exo Mech Update.
After a controversial launch, No Man’s Sky hit its stride with the Beyond update, which launched in the summer of 2019. Since that time Hello Games has focused on continuous improvement. The new Minotaur is quite an upgrade, and is even fully compatible with the game’s virtual reality mode on PC platforms and PlayStation VR.
The Minotaur mech features a jetpack that allows it to jump and slide, an immersive cockpit with multiple active display panels, and has optional top-mounted tools and weaponry. You can even call it down from your orbiting freighter, just like in the first-person shooterTitanfall. Best of all, it’s immune to all planetary hazards. That should dramatically expand the survivability of players looking to explore strange new planets and live off the land once they touch down.
The Exo Mech Update also includes additional new exocraft features, including solar panels for recharging their engines and improved scanning. It’s now live on all platforms.

No Man’s Sky: Origins update adds millions of new planets, more diversity, and sandworms

Hello Games gives players a new universe to discover (again)

No Man’s Sky’s latest update, Origins, drops today, and it gives players millions of new planets to discover. Those strange new worlds will look markedly different from the millions players have already seen over the past four years during their journey through the massive, procedurally generated spacefaring game.

Hello Games’ new additions to No Man’s Sky include moving weather systems, with extreme events like tornados and lightning storms; never-before-seen flora and fauna that exhibit new behaviors, like burrowing and improved flocking; bigger mountains, deeper oceans, steeper cliffs, and enormous buildings housing new discoveries. There are active volcanoes and meteor showers, additions that not only look cool, but have a real gameplay impact, Hello Games says.

And there are sandworms. Massive, Dune-inspired invertebrates that burrow underground and present the kind of threat only a giant sandworm can.

The point of Hello Games’ Origins free update for No Man’s Sky is to increase diversity, both to wow new players who will discover a more varied universe and for veteran players who have invested hundreds of hours in the game.

“For people who have played a thousand hours, we want them to feel the game is fresh and new,” No Man’s Sky game director Sean Murray said in an interview with Polygon. But adding that feeling of freshness has presented a challenge for the (still relatively small) No Man’s Sky team — in part due to the game’s popularity.

“We’ve been planning something like this for quite a while,” Murray explained. “We built this procedural universe and we put it out there. We’ve updated the game a lot, but [the game] itself hasn’t changed that much, in terms of the fundamental planets that you go around and explore. People have had hundreds of millions hours in that universe we’ve made [and] ... to an extent, it’s a little bit embarrassing. We should really make that better.”

Updating the core of No Man’s Sky — fixing the game’s foundation while millions of people are living in its house — included building “so many things we wanted to do, would have loved to do day one,” but are hard because the game is a living thing. “The more popular the game has become, the more people who’ve played it, the more difficult it is for us to go change some of the fundamentals,” Murray said.

“That’s why we’re calling [the update] Origins,” he explained. “It’s not just about this update, it’s given us a whole bunch of powers and a bit of a rewrite of the underlying technology for us to do this.”

An astronaut raises its arms in a field of glowing fungus in a screenshot from No Man’s Sky: Origins.
Image: Hello Games
It’s also why, while some of Origins’ new additions to No Man’s Sky will come to existing planets, Hello Games had to birth millions of new planets to be home to the volcanos, more extreme landscapes, and firestorms. The developer didn’t want Origins’ changes to destroy or otherwise interfere with players existing bases and community hubs.

“People have made their homes, they’ve lived in this universe,” Murray said. “I would be working on things like making mountains taller, and you’d see online that somebody has dedicated a planet to a lost loved one and built a base for them. And I’ve got my head in my hands thinking, ‘I’m going to destroy that planet if we do this.’”

Murray said that “some of the biome diversity,” will change universe-wide, but that “the fundamental shape of the terrain will stay the same on existing planets.”

While I haven’t played No Man’s Sky’s big new update myself — it launches Wednesday, Sept. 23 — the changes sound potentially awe-inspiring, even for veteran players. Origins adds new cloud rendering technology for more dramatic skies. Planets will have more color variety. Giant beetles and massive butterflies will fly overhead. Players will be visited by black market traders on planet surfaces, and meet robotic lifeforms on new worlds. It’s a staggering amount of new additions, paired with less sexy updates, like UI improvements and streamlined crafting.

But all of it sounds like a good reason to revisit No Man’s Sky again, just to see what’s out there.

No Man’s Sky coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X on launch day with free upgrade

Hello Games is delivering a list of improvements for next-gen consoles

An explorer on a green planet stands near a giant bug in a screenshot from No Man’s Sky

Hello Games’ massive space exploration game, No Man’s Sky, is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X when those next-generation consoles launch in November. Players who own the game on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version for free, and they’ll get some brand-new perks — including 4K resolutions at 60 frames per second — for doing so.

No Man’s Sky’s Next Generation update promises a “lusher, richer and more densely populated” game, with more detailed planet surfaces, as seen in the video above. Those visual enhancements will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X, as well as on Windows PC. Visuals on next-gen consoles will also be improved through better looking shadows, greater draw distances, and updated lighting and volumetric effects.

The update will also bring with it 32-player multiplayer and “vast base building,” according to Hello Games. “Players can now work together to build huge off-world colonies, with the ability to construct and render far more vast and complex bases on screen,” the developer said. Like this:

No Man’s Sky players can also expect super-fast load times, thanks to next-gen consoles’ standard SSDs. “Explore the universe instantly with 5-10x reduction in loading times,” Hello Games said. “On next-gen consoles, you can warp from solar system to solar system in an instant.”

On PlayStation 5, No Man’s Sky players will experience haptic feedback through the DualSense controller and “advanced audio,” thanks to PlayStation 5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech. They’ll also be able to play No Man’s Sky with PlayStation VR via backward compatibility.

Hello Games will also let players carry over their progress from PS4 and Xbox One, and continue to let next-gen console owners play with those on current-gen consoles, with cross-generation cross-play.

No Man’s Sky’s Next Generation update comes shortly after another major expansion of the game, Origins. That update, which arrived in late September, added tornados and lightning storms; active volcanoes and meteor showers; never-before-seen flora and fauna; bigger mountains, deeper oceans, steeper cliffs, and enormous buildings housing new discoveries. Oh, and sandworms.

Microsoft will release the Xbox Series X and Series S on Nov. 10. Later that week, Sony will officially release its PlayStation 5 on Nov. 12.
