Supermassive is going multiplatform with a new set of horror games collectively called the Dark Pictures Anthology.

The Until Dawn developer is working with publisher Bandai Namco to bring the horror titles to PC via Steam, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Hi there, I’m Pete Samuels, CEO and Executive Producer at Supermassive Games. I am really excited to be talking to you today about The Dark Pictures Anthology – a series of stand-alone, cinematic branching horror games. The first in the series is called Man of Medan and is launching in 2019.

At Supermassive, we have a passion to deliver powerful cinematic stories and we’re following on from titles like Until Dawn and The Inpatient by telling new horror stories that we expect the fans will want to play. Each game in the series will feature a brand new story, setting, and characters. The Anthology format gives us the opportunity to tap into a variety of horror sub-genres. We’ve identified 39 that we’d love to represent in the Anthology, but that would take some time!

The story of Man of Medan starts off on a dive boat in the South Pacific. With a rumoured WWII wreck to find, and plenty of on-deck partying to be had, our group of 4 young Americans and their skipper Fliss get ready for what should be the trip of a lifetime…but it doesn’t go quite to plan. As the day unfolds, and a storm rolls in, they find themselves trapped on board a ghost ship. Subjected to unimaginable stress and terror, they must try to find a way to escape the ship and its sinister history.

Man of Medan, like all the games in the Dark Pictures Anthology, is hugely replayable. In fact there is more branching in Man of Medan than any of our previous games. There are multiple endings and multiple scenarios based on the decisions you make in the game. Be careful though as all the playable characters can live, and any and all of them can die, depending on the choices you make.

Through the protagonists eyes you will uncover the secrets of the mystery surrounding the ill-fated boat. Figuring this out can save their lives – but whether or not they all escape is up to you.

Creating this project has been massively exciting for us and we can’t wait for people to start playing Man of Medan and the subsequent games in The Dark Pictures Anthology.

As long as it's not a VR exclusive thing, I am 100% down for this.

On that note, anyone whose a PS4 owner, you *NEED* to check out Until Dawn. It's currently on sale for only $6 on PSN.

It's one of the most unique, fun games you'll play. It's a TellTale style game done in a much better presentation and production.

The facial animation looks really weird. Character models on a whole look like mannequins. Pretty remarkable what Remedy was able to achieve on a weaker hardware 2-3 years ago with Shawn Ashmore's character model.

Budget + support.

Everything in the video looks a step down from Until Dawn as well in terms of animations and facial stuff.

Until Dawn developers Supermassive have confirmed that their new horror game Man of Medan will be released on August 30th. Pre-orders are up on Amazon for $29.99; preorders include early access to Curator’s Cut, which will end up being free later in 2019.

You can check out the announcement trailer below.

Man of Medan is the first game in Supermassive’s “Dark Pictures Anthology,” a wave of brand new choose-your-own-adventure horror games in the style of their hit Until Dawn.

Supermassive Confirms Multiplayer for Man of Medan, Here’s How it Works

We’ve announced two multiplayer modes for The Dark Pictures Anthology — Shared Story mode and Movie Night mode. In Shared Story you’ll play online with a friend, making choices that affect both of you. We really hope you enjoy the intensity of experiencing the story with a friend… and that you are still friends after!

In Movie night mode, five people (you and up to four of your friends) can play couch co-op. Each player can enter their name and choose which character (or characters) to play, then simply pass the pad whenever that character is the focus of the game. You can explore, react, and make decisions to keep your character alive and stay in the game. When prompted, simply pass the controller onto the next player so that they can continue with their character. Periodically, the game will present a summary of how each player has played. We were so impressed by the innovative and collaborative ways people played Until Dawn together that we created this feature to help facilitate that way of playing.

Creating a narrative game with multiplayer has thrown up some interesting design challenges — the most significant of which was in the two-player Shared Story, and how to have both players enjoy a great story when they each see different things and neither sees everything. It also created some great new design and narrative opportunities which we hope will surprise you. When you and your friend ‘split up,’ you can’t be sure that you’ll ever see their character again! It is horror, after all.

We think that it really brings something fresh to the genre to play with a friend online, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results.

Each mode is different but both have been influenced by our experience with Until Dawn. When Until Dawn released we were surprised and delighted by how many people were streaming the game. We’ve had around 1 billion views on YouTube alone. We’d also get plenty of people telling us how much they enjoyed playing the game together with friends on the couch. These both fed into the initial design of The Dark Pictures Anthology and we decided that along with story, characters, and cinematic production values, multiplayer should be core to the series. In short, we have built The Dark Pictures Anthology from the ground up with multiplayer in mind.

Your first chance to try this out will be in Man of Medan, the first in the series. This game sees four American tourists and their inexperienced captain going on the diving holiday of a lifetime in the South pacific. All sounds idyllic right? Wrong, things soon take a turn for the worse and it will be up to you what happens next. With Man of Medan having more branching than any of our previous games, you’ll need to replay the game many times to find out every possible scenario.

Whether you play Solo, online Shared Story, or couch-based Movie Night, we hope you’ll have a great horror experience. We can’t wait to see and hear how you get on. My advice? Don’t. Play. Alone!

Movie mode sounds exactly like how most people would have played Until Dawn in the first place.

That seems like the logical conclusion to take this genre. Looking forward to this.

The game is surprisingly heavy on the current consoles (GPU heavy ?) But at least the performance is much better than Until Dawn, on the mid-gens at least.

800x300p on the base Xbox One !

YIKES.

PS4 Pro uses a dynamic resolution with the lowest native pixel count found being 1920x1080 (letterboxed to approximately 1920x817) and the highest native pixel count found being 2304x1296 (letterboxed to approximately 2304x980). PS4 Pro uses a temporal reconstruction technique that can increase the pixel count to 2304x1296 (letterboxed to approximately 2304x980) when rendering natively below this resolution. PS4 Pro appears to render at a native resolution of 1920x1080 when outputting at 1080p.

Imagine a Switch port. 360x100p.

This seems to be heavier on the GPU, looking at how the consoles align. PC version is running at a comfortable 1080p/60 FPS on my laptop in the starting segment though, so I'm not complaining.

Is it worth dexing?
Did you like Until Dawn ? If Yes, then for sure. If no, then what was the reason. If you want a more compact game without much padding, this is a 6~ -ish hours game and completely standalone so future games in the anthology won't be effected by your decisions.

Haven't played it.

These are like the Telltale games? What sort of "gameplay" interaction is there outside of dialogues?

Yes, they're like the TT games but with a lot higher production values. Basic gameplay is walking, dialogue choices, quick time events and simplistic puzzle scenarios. Their biggest hook is timed events where you, as the player, have to make the appropriate environmental or dialogue choices so people don't die. Until Dawn was basically "I know what you did last summer" the game, this is probably something similar.

Have you played Detroit ? This is basically Detroit but with a 'teenage slasher flick' setting as the backdrop.
