This year's Call of Duty game is called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, according to reports and Eurogamer's own sources.


It's not to be confused with the first Modern Warfare, aka Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, released in 2007. Or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, released in 2016. Despite the name, it's very much a new game.


Twitter user LongSensation spilled the beans on the Modern Warfare moniker this afternoon. I've heard this name previously. Kotaku's Jason Schreier has also tweeted to say this is legit.

And CoD Modern Warfare has become the most viewed video game trailer in 2019 based on analytics (6.4M). For reference, the Death Stranding 2 days views (5.8M) were overtaken by Modern Warfare in less than a day.

Whether you like it or not, ray tracing is inevitable.

Tucked away in the fact sheet is a short note that the next Call of Duty will also support DirectX Raytracing (DXR). That's only on PC, naturally—the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles will likely support the tech as well, but indications are they're still a year or more away. Which means, reading between the lines, Activision and Call of Duty will be working with Nvidia and the GeForce RTX cards to support the feature.

Anyway, if you're keeping track, that's one more ray tracing game to add to the list. Currently shipping games include Battlefield 5, Metro Exodus, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Justice (a Korean MMO), and Quake 2 RTX. Soon we'll get Wolfenstein Youngblood, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, Atomic Heart, and others in the works as well.

Gunfight may be Call of Duty’s best mode in years



Last year’s Call of Duty chased the success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnitewith its Blackout battle royale mode. This year’s entry, the rebooted Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, is seeking thrills on a smaller scale with a new mode called Gunfight, a two-versus-two, enjoyably fast multiplayer mode that offers intense thrills.
Officially revealed on Thursday — I played it back in May and loved it — Gunfight pits two teams of two against each other in small maps. Players are armed with weapons and equipment selected by the game mode, and mirrored loadouts change from round to round. Teams have 40 seconds to find and eliminate their opponents, and if no one is killed within that time frame, an overtime flag will spawn. Defend the flag for three seconds and you’ll score a point. Or eliminate the other team and score a point. The first team to score six points wins the game.
It’s a perfect drop-in, drop-out game mode; players don’t need to worry about selecting loadouts or managing their Create-A-Class, they can just pop into a quick game with friends and get some shooting in. Rounds move quickly and there’s not auto-regenerating health, so players need to be cautious, communicative, and aggressive.





Infinity Ward/ActivisionDeveloper Infinity Ward likened Gunfight to Call of Duty’s take on Street Fighter. It’s not a perfect analogy (2v2 fighting games aren’t too common in the West), but the short, round-based action and the reactive, mind-game strategies required to compete in a fighting game seem applicable to how Gunfight is played.
When I played through a couple games at Infinity Ward’s studio, my partner and I kept experimenting with different routes and strategies. Sometimes, he’d take the high ground, hiding behind the containers in a warehouse while I’d draw fire from below. Other times, we’d stick together, watching carefully for movement so we could single out a target to put pressure on the remaining survivor. Each round gave us a different weapon or piece of equipment, like a tactical shield, to experiment with. A shotgun-based round plays very differently from an all-sniper rifle round.
Infinity Ward has confirmed three maps for Gunfight so far: King, set inside a warehouse; Pine, a dense forest location with a few man-made structures; and Stack, a container yard set in a desert.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released Oct. 25 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One. Infinity Ward promises more multiplayer modes as part of the game’s competitive suite, with a full multiplayer reveal coming Aug. 1.

Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward officially revealed a new multiplayer mode, Gunfight, forCall of Duty: Modern Warfare last week. It’s a 2v2, round-based mode where the objective is to eliminate (or outlast) your opponent, and loadouts don’t matter — the mode chooses players’ weapons for them.
On Thursday, Infinity Ward released new footage of Gunfight in action. It’s raw, 4K gameplay that offers a taste of what to expect from Modern Warfare’s new lightning-fast, pick-up-and-play, duos-only multiplayer mode. In just under six minutes, you’ll get a preview of the three announced maps (warehouse level King, dense forest map Pine, and Stack, a container yard set in a desert) and the types of guns on the menu.
Activision and Infinity Ward will give Call of Duty fans an extended look at Modern Warfare’s multiplayer suite next week on Aug. 1, at 10 a.m. PT via Twitch.
The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released Oct. 25 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.

They're doing some smart thinking with this game's development.

Variable rate shading, dynamic resolution (which is nothing new) and developing targeting 70 FPS so they always have an overhead for 60 FPS on consoles.

Good to see DF finally realize CB isn't too hot a technique as they've always touted.

Accounting for overhead is nothing new either. All games that actually provide stable target fps do that to attain it.

It probably also depends on the kind of game and engine implementation. For example, in slower paced games like Detroit and God of War it looks phenomenal. But Spider Man is a much more hectic and fast paced game where Insomniac opted to use TAA up-scaling + dynamic resolution instead and it works great for that game.

Also, nice to see VRS but a shame it's this late into the current gen. Next gen will probably make a lot of use with it from the get go.

Thats a gross exaggeration imo. Actual "4K" captures look realllllly bad. Image quality is awful in "4K" mode.






Looks like a retro block filter was run over the final image. Not even decent by any stretch.

Call of Duty seems to be using a new temporal technique. Lets see how it looks in the final product.

Which proves how much the franchise has been lacking all these years. At this pace, maybe they will find a way to implement DICEs USP of destructibility in another decade :hah:

Which proves how much the franchise has been lacking all these years.
After the disappointment that is BFV, you don't have much of a choice but to switch to CoD (in hope that crossplay finally provides you an adequate user base :hah:).

Being skilled at shooters in one thing and being a professional is another. Someone who has never been good at shooters talking about what constitutes good gunplay is laughable :lol:

LMAO....you know what's casual?....small arena fights....I'm not going to take a DMC game seriously until they entirely revamp the engine and fix the fundamentally flawed nature of the existing games.
Most likely all you do to get through shooters is spray and pray and call the ones good with a higher success rate. Makes sense why you're a call-a-doody fanboy now :lol:
