Olympics 2020: Tokyo wins race to host Games

Tokyo has been chosen to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games ahead of Istanbul and Madrid.

The Japanese capital won a majority of second round votes from the International Olympic Committee members in Buenos Aires to beat Istanbul.

After tying with the Turkish city in the first round, Madrid was earlier eliminated in a tiebreak by 49-45.

What a shame. Tokyo has already hosted an Olympics in 1964 and I can't understand why it has been awarded this prestigious event once more. Istanbul is a fabulous city and the Turkish economy is doing great!

Too volatile a region perhaps? I sense the voting pattern was more political than strategic in nature.

Tokyo is around 150 miles from Abuses will lead to banushima. Even though all venues may not be in the city, they would still be considerably far from the nuclear disaster site.

150 miles is no distance for wind and water. . I'm pretty sure radioactivity in Tokyo will be higher than safe limits. Radioactivity was detected as far as Sweden after Chernobyl disaster. and radioactivity remained high 10 years after the disaster.

Had this been a 3rd world country, every country could have boycotted the Olympics.

This was the fifth bid by a turkish city not sure if all were the same as this time and the third straight losing bid for madrid. Both had more baggage than japan.

For the turkish city, recent voilence with the use of force and curtailing freedom. For madrid financial crisis.

Now the turkish govt is free to do as it wantsbut should expect othersto support it, the same is true for all its bids

It was even rejected when it had a secular govt. at its helm. And seriously most of turkey is muslim in name only. What i really like about the place is the respect of pakistanis and the sacrifices made to save their state at the end of ww-i. Whats amazing is tht they realize and remember it still, unlike the uae, which survived its initial months on donations from and including pakistan

They should choose Olympic continent wise now , so that every continent can get the chance
