Our demo was more focused on the game’s mechanics. The first event we sampled was a “Highway Battle,” basically a 1v1 drag race along a stretch of highway against an AI-controlled opponent. A handy meter situated at the left side of the screen during these events allows players to keep track of their position, with icons for each car showing the distance between the two racers. As racing events go, this one is fairly

simple. Drive in a mostly straight line, weaving in and out of traffic until you reach the finish line.

Need for Speed Undercover Preview (Detailed)

Need for Speed Undercover Preview (Detailed)
Source: NFS Unlimited

Need for Speed Undercover will be in stores on November 18th this year, we all know that, but what can we expect of the game that has been in development for the past 15 months? We can expect the Need for Speed for sure! Free roam, cops, damage, customization, lots of awesome cars, big story and the classic action-like driving! No, this is not a wish list for the next Need for Speed, this is Need for Speed Undercover!

Open World Action Driving Adventure

The sentence above is a sum up of all the key features of the game. Let's cover it one by one!

Open World

Free roam is back! This time it's a tri-city area consisting of Palm Harbor, Port Crescent and Sunset Hills Mountains. Each area is unique in it's own way: we have commercial downtown, industrial harbor area and rural farmland area. All are connected with an interstate highway ring connecting all three together. It is a rather large area with the interstate loop taking about 8 minutes to complete at high speed. We won't just be racing downtown and on highways, expect paths through factories, canyons, suburbs, construction sites, mountains and more. There will be plenty of shortcuts and alternative routes to evade cops and to help you further, pursuit breakers are returning (pursuit breaker is an object that when you hit it, it usually crashes down on cars following you).
Time of the day is set to the so called "Magic hour" - around 6am when the light is low casting long shadows - which gives the game a slight yellowish tone, a bit similar to Need for Speed Most Wanted.

Action Driving

One thing that I was quite impressed with Need for Speed Undercover was the driving physics. They took the physics model out of ProStreet, upgraded and tuned it. Cars now feel lighter to drive and stick to the road better, making the game easier to drive which ultimately results in higher speeds and what the title says, action driving. To make the handling even more action, they made performing stunts really easy! See cops coming at you? No problem, just hit ebrake and pull off a 180 spin - easily done from going backwards as well. Like drifting? Putting your car sideways shouldn't be a problem, but keeping it sideways will require a bit of practice.
But let's hope you don't like drifting too much - it is not a part of this game. Game modes consist of the standard circuits, sprints, canyon runs and the all new Highway battle which is essentially a one on one race on the highway against extremely dense traffic. Traffic is supposed to be more intelligent in Undercover: expect it to drive according to the speed limit, use blinkers when changing lanes and try to avoid the crashes made by you or your opponents.
Nitrous is back (this time with multiple shots) as well as Speed breaker (a feature in Most Wanted and Carbon where you could slow down the time to perform more extreme maneuvres) - which you will have to use all at once before it recharges again. Another feature that made it back is drafting - drive behind opponents and use the lesser drag to gain speed. And speaking of drag, it's not one of the game modes in Undercover.

Adventure

What we never had in a Need for Speed game is a good story line. Need for Speed Undercover will try to improve the series' reputation in that area with a big and complex story line revolving around the player who is an undercover cop. His only contact with the outside world an agent played by Maggie Q, who is the main star of the game. The cast includes other actors including Christina Milian. The filming was done in Hollywood and is a combination of real film with digital effect applied to it which results in a very unique look. Check out the trailer to see what I mean. To progress through the stories you'll have to play different missions which will be visible on your map. You'll be able to select missions right from the map, or the old fashioned way by driving to the location of the mission.

Those are the main features, but they do not cover all the game has to offer. I'm sure a lot of you are a bit worried right now whether there is any customization in the game: yes there is! Autosculpt is back, they are also promising separate bumper and sideskirt kits (along with full body kits), there's improvements to the paint system allowing you to paint different areas of the car (just the bumper for instance). Performance tuning is in as well. So is damage, but it is pretty much just visual. But like always, we won't get a perfect game this year. There is no rear view mirror, no dashboard camera (they did center the hood cam though), no split screen. Photomode is back but I wouldn't be hoping for replay mode (I will try to get an official answer whether replay is in though). Cops are in, but don't expect to drive in a cop car, although that could be in one of the multiplayer modes (which haven't been revealed yet).

It seems that with Undercover EA took the best features of the previous games and put them all together into one game which could as well be called Most Wanted 2. And as Most Wanted was one of the best Need for Speed games, Undercover could as well turn out to be one cool game!

Need for Speed: Undercover hands-on impressions

Source: U.G.O

Just to refresh, in Need for Speed: Undercover players take on the role of an undercover cop in the Tri-City area. The name is an apt one, as the open-world map features a cluster of three sprawling metropolises connected by a single superhighway and arrayed along the coast of a sizeable body of water. It’s the player’s job to explore these cities, taking on a variety of tasks in an effort to bring down a local organized crime syndicate. That’s about as far as we got in terms of how the story will unfold.

As racing events go, this one is fairly simple. Drive in a mostly straight line, weaving in and out of traffic until you reach the finish line.
Next up was “Driver Job,” a more elaborate event in which players are required to outrun pursuing cops as they bring their vehicle to a local chop shop. Nothing better for getting the blood flowing than a good, old-fashioned high speed chase. In a cool twist, getting busted, which occurs if you come to a complete stop with the cops hot on your tail, ends the event with a cutscene in which your driver – his face blurred out, Cops-style – makes a run for it, only to be tackled by a pursuing police officer. Moral of the story: fast cars are much better than two feet.

The last event we sampled was “Circuit Race,” an eight-car event which ran, in this particular case, through a series of winding, forest-flanked roads. Pretty standard stuff for anyone who’s ever played a racing game of any sort. Outdrive the opposing cars to nab a first place win, simple as that. During these races a percentage meter appears on-screen as an indicator of how much race has been completed, definitely a nice touch.

Regardless of the event in progress, players will be able to earn bonus points for a variety of things. Whenever your vehicle collides with another on the road, a “Trade Paint” bonus is picked up. If that vehicle happens to be a police car or some other city vehicle, the bonus instead falls into the category of “Cost to State.” Same goes for the wanton destruction of public property. Points earned in these and other categories can lead to financial gains, since all of NFS:U’s cars can be tricked out with both cosmetic and functional parts. There’s a tradeoff though; contact with other vehicles slows down your own, so hit & runs should be employed sparingly.

The controls work as well as you’d expect them to. You’ve got buttons for gas, brake, handbrake and (when available) nitro boost. Players can cycle between several different camera perspectives by tapping RB on an Xbox 360 gamepad, including first-person, car interior-free first-person and an external view situated a little behind and above the vehicle.

The game’s visual did not disappoint either. Vehicles – including our own super-charged Audi – gleam with reflective surfaces, twinkling beneath the sunlight as varied environments go whizzing by. The cities also look good, from the cracked and worn pavement you’re driving on to the surrounding environments, which varied (in what we saw) from coastal highways to city streets to winding roads through forested areas. Granted, we didn’t get to see a great deal of the Tri-City area, but the few details we caught as scenery went whizzing by were at least pleasing to the eye.

Expect to see much more of Need for Speed: Undercover as the game’s November 18 release draws closer. This early look didn’t do much to set it apart from predecessor Carbon, but we’re expecting (perhaps “hoping” is a better word) that iteration will be replaced by innovation in the game’s unfolding story. For now, racing fans can rest easy in the knowledge that the coming Need for Speed release looks good and plays even better.

Yeah those look pretty damn good and I'm quite impressed by that little bit of video. The gameplay footage looks real awesome. Finally the sense of speed is back, the one which was lacking in the series since Most Wanted.

Still having a small doubt about one thing. Car damage?

Well gameplay wise obviously they give again a classic look that i want from NFS series. and about graphics its obviously not look like a blast! as i see "Race Driver GRid" is far enough good in graphics !

Sorry no offense but this one is not looks like next-gen. but i still love and enjoy the game from its flashy gameplay :D
