[h=1]The Nintendo Switch's brains are in its handheld unit, not the dock[/h]

[h=2]Dock handles power and TV output[/h]

Yesterday’s Nintendo Switch reveal left plenty of questions in the air, and while Nintendo isn’t providing many further details, the company is clarifying a few points. For one, the primary piece of the hybrid console is the unit with the screen, not the dock, the company said in a statement to IGN.
“The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system,” a Nintendo representative told IGN. Of course, that could mean that the dock performs some computation or processing in order to format the game for output to a TV, or handles other tasks.
But the handheld unit of the Nintendo Switch contains all the hardware components of the system — games are running directly on the device, which is why you can slide the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers onto either side of it. When you drop the unit into the dock, the dock begins charging it and outputting the game to an external screen over an HDMI connection.

There are also two USB ports on the left side of the dock, which could be used for charging controllers or connecting other accessories. We don’t know whether the Nintendo Switch uses USB or some kind of proprietary connection for its peripherals; Nintendo has only revealed one so far, the wireless Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

This is the exact opposite setup from the design of the Wii U. Nintendo’s current console has a traditional set-top box containing all the guts of the Wii U. The Wii U GamePad can’t function without that box — the console wirelessly streams video and audio to the handheld unit. (The Wii U does not need to be connected to a television, however; as long as it’s plugged in, you can play entirely on the GamePad.)
The Nintendo Switch represents the strongest attempt yet by the company to blur the lines between console and portable. This time around, the games will run just the same whether the screen is sitting in the dock or sitting on an airplane seat’s tray table.
Nintendo will launch the Switch worldwide in March 2017.

[h=1]Nintendo’s Switch can’t serve as a second gameplay screen in your home[/h]

[h=2]One screen or the other[/h]

Nintendo’s tablet-meets-console Switch is dropping one of the things that fans of the Wii U seemed to really like: The ability to use the system as a second gaming screen.
The Wii U’s GamePad served as both a controller and a functioning game screen. Owners could use the GamePad’s screen for secondary information, different views or even to play the game without using the television.
That won’t be the case with the Switch, which features a removable tablet-like device that allows owners to play games on the go.
“Nintendo Switch is dedicated to deliver a single-screen experience, on whatever screen you might choose,” Nintendo officials told Polygon when asked if the popular Wii U feature would be included in the Switch.

That’s likely because the base is used to connect the device to the TV, Nintendo also confirmed today.
While the Switch won’t let players use the tablet as a second screen as they play on the TV, it will, of course, allow you to play games without the need of a television.
Nintendo declined to answer a slew of other questions about the tablet and its features. Among the questions Nintendo declined to answer now were:

  • What Nvidia chipset the device is using.
  • Whether the Switch will have a touchscreen or motion/gyroscopic control.
  • What the tablet’s resolution is, how much it weighs and its specific size.
  • If the Switch supports other controller attachments beyond the Joy-Con it comes with.

Nintendo representatives did point out that there will be more announcements coming about the console before the launch. But it won’t be this year, according to the company.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch doesn’t support Wii U discs or 3DS cartridges[/h]

[h=2]No word on downloads, though[/h]

The Nintendo Switch will be the first home console since the Nintendo 64 to use cartridges, but it won’t support physical media from the company’s current console and handheld platforms.
A Nintendo representative confirmed to Polygon today that the Nintendo Switch will not be compatible with Nintendo 3DS cartridges or Wii U discs. It does not appear from our limited glimpse of the hardware so far that either the Switch console or its dock includes a disc drive at all, although Nintendo has not commented on that.
When asked if the Nintendo Switch will support downloadable games — whether they’re Switch games or titles released on previous systems like the 3DS — the representative told Polygon that Nintendo isn’t discussing specifics on that front. For the time being, Nintendo fans can hold out hope that they’ll be able to play downloadable Wii U and 3DS games on the Switch.
The cartridges for the Switch, which are known as Game Cards, appear to be similar in size to 3DS cartridges. But Nintendo also declined to give details on how Switch titles will be distributed, and did not comment on whether the system uses SD cards for games.

Nintendo 3DS cartridges reportedly go up to 8 GB in capacity, but of course, 3DS games run at a much lower resolution than the high-definition screen of the Nintendo Switch. NBA 2K17, which was featured in the console’s reveal trailer, weighs in at well over 40 GB on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions are both under 8 GB.
Flash memory is getting cheaper every year, though, so the Nintendo Switch could use Game Cards with 16 GB or perhaps even 32 GB of storage. At this point, we’ll just have to wait for the company to reveal technical specifications, which Nintendo says it will do sometime before launching the system in March 2017.

Why the fuck use cartridges ?
1 ) Proprietary technology...
2) They can license it to other manufacturers. They get revenue on each one sold either by them or 3rd party..more money to them.
3) They can control the accessories market related to it due to license
4) More control over media on it
5) More control in terms of piracy

Also while the console in itself doesnt look technological amazing, it doesnt have to be to the run the type of games Nintendo will try to offer...if it has the launch lineup with the likes of Super Mario, Mario Cart, Zelda, etc ..then its already a home run..think of it as a next gen gameboy advance

Yeah but do cartridges offer the same amount of storage that blue rays do. I dont think so. Switch is not only a handheld console and I am sure games would need a lot of space. Games this generation are easily upto 50 GB in size. Would cartridges be able to handle that ? Even if they can I am pretty sure that its going to be expensive

[h=1]Report: Nintendo Switch includes a touchscreen[/h]

[h=2]The new console doesn’t lose all of Nintendo’s old tricks[/h]

Nintendo’s upcoming home console-handheld hybrid, the Nintendo Switch, won’t ditch the touchscreen its predecessors have, Eurogamer reports. “A number of sources” confirmed that not only does the Switch have touch controls, it will include a multi-touch screen.
That differentiates the Nintendo Switch’s reported six-inch, 720-pixel resolution screen from those on Wii U and the Nintendo DS line of handhelds. Those consoles boast resistive screens that allow for just single-touch use, while Eurogamer’s sources suggest the Switch will include touch functionality akin to most smartphones. That includes multi-finger gesture support, according to the unnamed sources.
Nintendo has been pushing the Switch as a home console first, meaning that the tablet-style portable is meant to spend most of its time in the dock that connects it to the TV. That suggests that touch support may be limited in use, in comparison to its prominence in Wii U and 3DS games.
Recent patent findings suggest that the handheld does include a touchscreen, as well as a gyroscope, GPS, compass and motion-tracking capabilities. The company filed these documents over the course of the last year; we took a look at several of them earlier this week.

In the console’s reveal trailer, Nintendo chose to focus on what Nintendo Switch does differently from the Wii U and 3DS, its current systems. That left the status of touchscreen controls up in the air, making it onto our list of the biggest questions we still have about the device.
We’ll learn much more about Nintendo Switch in mid-January, when Nintendo is expected to unveil more specs and titles at a press conference in Tokyo, Japan.

[h=1]Nintendo president doesn’t understand why the market reacted poorly to the Switch[/h]

[h=2]Shares dropped more than 7 percent after the reveal[/h]

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima found himself confused after the reveal of the company’s next hybrid console, the Nintendo Switch, shares in the company dropped.
Talking to Bloomberg about the Switch and the future of the company, Kimishima said he was surprised to see the negative reaction from investors. He added that he didn’t have an answer as to why it dropped so suddenly and was left confused by the entire situation.
“To tell you the truth, I was surprised,” Kimishima told Bloomberg. “I had wondered about the reaction. But I don't understand why. And there's no real point in me talking about the stock price.”
The night before Nintendo was set to reveal the Switch, the company added more than $1 billion in market revenue. Shares jumped 4.6 percent, making it the biggest surge for the company in more than a month following the phenomenal success of Pokémon Go this summer.

Following the reveal, however, the company saw a a 7.3 percent drop in shares overnight. Kimishimi said that while he didn’t understand why investors were concerned after seeing the Switch, after eight straight years of declining revenue, the company was dedicated to increasing the number of people who play games, hoping to achieve an increase in profit through building that player base.
“What we aim for is to increase the number of people who play games,” Kimishima said. “We want to deliver all kinds of new surprises to our customers, and it is through their support that our revenue increases. That's the end result. But if that result doesn't show, that means we weren't able to deliver. Next year is when we see the result.”
Nintendo revealed the Switch on Oct. 20 in a video. The hybrid console will allow for a more traditional gaming experience, but can also be used as a portable console on the go. More information about the system, including specs, release date and price, will be announced during an event in Japan on Jan. 12, 2017.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch Price Rumored to Be $250 at Launch[/h]

Nintendo may have one of the hottest selling products of the 2016 holiday season with The NES Classic mini-console, but the gaming world’s attenton remains fixed on the company’s bold 2017 gambit with it’s new entry in the console wars. That new console is the recently announced Nintendo Switch, a transforming home-to-portable modular system formerly know as The NX.
Of course for gamers eager to place a preorder on the new machine, or for those still on the fence as they wait to hear news of how much the Switch will cost them, rumors are now flying that the price of the system has been leaked ahead of schedule. And if those rumors prove to be true, gamers may be pleased to hear the price point is lower than many had expected.
According to a report by Let’s Play Video Games (via Bleeding Cool) the UK gaming retailer GAME has been told to expect the system to cost in the area of £199.99, which would translate to just under $250.00 in U.S. currency. This is supposedly in line with a similar leak from Toys R Us Canada, which was briefly said to have priced the device at the similar rate of $329.99 Canadian.

If accurate, these price points would place the Switch roughly in line with Nintendo’s typical price targets — but dramatically lower than the standard prices one expects to pay for rival consoles like the Sony PlayStation 4 or Microsoft Xbox One. Nintendo has had no official response to these leaks, and generally does not comment on rumors relating to the timing or price of its products.

The lower price point would be well in line with industry expectations, which had widely predicted that Nintendo would seek to keep the cost of the system low in order to target families with children and casual gamers who do not necessarily see themselves playing enough games to justify a $400-500 dedicated device. It will also likely be seen as an attractive price point to more devoted gamers who often buy Nintendo consoles as an “addition” to their more expensive main gaming hub for access to the popular first-party titles that the Japanese gaming giant releases exclusively to their platforms.
Left unsaid is what this price point will mean for the overall power of the Switch, in terms of what it can actually do in terms of graphical output and game size. Nintendo has described the system as a hoped-for competitor to bigger, more expensive machines; but full technical specifications are not yet available and many have raised doubts that a device built essentially as a handheld capable of outputting to a television display when “docked” can push the pixels necessary to be seen as a viable alternative to Sony or Microsoft’s increasingly powerful consoles.
Stick with Screen Rant for more Nintendo Switch news as it develops.

[h=1]Skyrim, Fallout director Todd Howard heaps praise on the Nintendo Switch[/h]
[h=2]One of the best demos I've ever seen”[/h]
Bethesda is being cagey about which games it will be bringing to the Nintendo Switch — even though Skyrim was shown in Nintendo’s official trailer for the device — but Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda, was enthusiastic about the product during a recent interview with Glixel.
“I love it. I got to play it. I will tell you — well, maybe that's an [non-disclosure agreement] thing,” Howard said. “One of the best demos I've ever seen. Probably the best demo I've ever seen. At E3.”
When pressed for details, he stated that the demo of the hardware, not any particular game, was what impressed him so strongly.
“I think it's really smart what they're doing,” he continued. “We're definitely going to be supporting it. It's the first time we've done something on Nintendo. If you don't count the old NES stuff. Home Alone. Or Where's Waldo?”

Ah yes, who could forget Where’s Waldo, the classic Bethesda release for the NES?

So even though Bethesda won’t confirm that Skyrim is coming to the Switch, saying that they “are not confirming any specific titles at this time,” when asked for comment on the game’s inclusion in Nintendo’s marketing materials, it sounds like Todd Howard is already sold on the device.
“It's the same game on the TV and on the other screen,” he stated when asked if it would really be possible to bring Skyrim with you “on the go.”

[h=1]Report: Nintendo Switch will finally bring GameCube games to Virtual Console[/h]

[h=2]Sources say Melee, Animal Crossing are among the first offerings[/h]

Nintendo Switch will feature a Virtual Console lineup, Eurogamer reports, and among the platforms available will be the GameCube. That would make it the very first time that GameCube favorites will be sold digitally.
Three individual, unnamed sources told Eurogamer that handful of GameCube titles are ready to go for the Nintendo Switch, which launches next March. These are Luigi’s Mansion, one of the GameCube’s launch titles; Super Mario Sunshine, its big Mario platformer; and Super Smash Bros. Melee, the most enduring GameCube classic. Animal Crossing is also in the testing phase.
The inclusion of Melee is particularly notable, considering it remains a favorite of esports competitors. The game turned 15 this fall, yet Melee is still the Smash Bros. game of choice for many serious — and casual — players.
Nintendo fans have begged for all four games, along with other GameCube hits, to make it to modern consoles. The Virtual Console includes games from the Nintendo Entertainment System era through the Nintendo 64; the Wii U also has Wii and Nintendo 3DS games available for download.

The Wii supported physical GameCube discs, but the Wii U dropped the backward compatibility. Nintendo confirmed to Polygon in October that the Switch won’t feature any physical backward compatibility with Wii U or Nintendo 3DS games, making a robust Virtual Console selection the best chance for nostalgic players to enjoy their older favorites.

[h=1]Watch Jimmy Fallon play Zelda on Nintendo Switch on The Tonight Show[/h]

[h=2]Reggie and Jimmy debut the Switch and Super Mario Run on late night[/h]

Jimmy Fallon Debuts the Nintendo Switch - YouTube

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aimé and Shigeru Miyamoto appeared on tonight’s episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and brought two special guests with them: Super Mario Run for iOS and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch. If you missed tonight’s episode, you can relive Jimmy Fallon both freaking out and geeking out playing with Mario and Zelda in the presence of their creator.
You might want to turn your speakers down as Fallon gets his hands on Super Mario Run, which is coming to the Apple App Store next week, because he is excited to play a Mario game with touchscreen controls.
Fallon does a better job of containing his enthusiasm — but not his Nintendo fanboyism and grasp of Miyamoto trivia — when going hands-on with Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch. There’s some new footage of Link in action in next year’s open-world adventure, and this is our first real look at the Switch being played live.
Nintendo probably won’t say more about the Switch until its upcoming Jan. 12 event, where executives will detail the price, release date and more information on the new hardware in a webcast from Tokyo.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch theorists kick it into hyperdrive after console’s TV debut[/h]

[h=2]Everything this subreddit learned from the console’s Fallon spot[/h]

The Nintendo Switch appeared on television last night, gracing the stage of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon for its first ever live demonstration. It was a momentous occasion for Nintendo fans — and especially the members of its subreddit, who have scrubbed through the footage in search of potential new details about the console.
With some instruction from Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, a giggly and excited Fallon got to play The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild on the Switch. By “on the Switch,” we mean in both of its potential states: We first saw the game on a big screen, with the Nintendo Switch tablet seated in its accompanying dock, followed by a quick change to some handheld play.
It seemed as though when Fils-Aime removed the Switch from its base, it took seconds to resume playing on the tablet. For members of the theory-filled subreddit, that quick change is indicative of how easy it will be to switch (sorry) between the console’s docked and portable modes. A thread broke down how transferring from the dock to the handheld likely works based on the brief gameplay demonstration, and subredditors are jazzed about its seeming instantaneousness.
“I don’t know about anyone else, but given that the game footage in the Switch’s trailer was completely edited onto the screens post-filming, I was concerned that smoothness and quickness of ‘switching’ was exaggerated, and wouldn’t really be that good,” wrote thehegs. “Nice to see it’s real!”

Just as exciting is that Breath of the Wild seems to run better on the Switch than the Wii U, based on some in-depth analysis by subreddit members. As the Switch is reportedly more powerful than the Wii U, that’s not surprising. The Fallon demo just gave members of the Switch forum the proof they were looking for to confirm their suspicions.
One user assembled a gallery that points out the differences between the Wii U and Switch versions. The main takeaways: The Switch version has “more detailed draw distance” and may run smoother than the Wii U game.
“It's hard to really compare this game to the WiiU version because of the graphical style too,” IWilgaus wrote, taking a measured approach. “Clearly when it was docked it was running very smooth when he turned the camera. So I'd expect if the WiiU can even run this that the Switch version will be 1080p and 60FPS docked with better draw distances, colour etc.”

Whether the game runs at 60 fps is up for debate, although some are insistent that Breath of the Wild will remain at 30 fps on both Wii U and Switch. Since clips of The Tonight Show don’t run at 60 fps on YouTube, it’s hard to say for sure. The subreddit lies divided on whether or not this is a big deal.
“As long as it is stable 30 fps I’m fine,” said pokeze.
Also debated: How heavy is the Switch, anyway? One of the most popular speculative threads is a picture of Fallon holding the tablet with one hand. Unless the boyish TV personality is deceptively built, maybe the Switch doesn’t weigh all that much. Not that we thought it was going to weigh a ton, considering it’s meant to be portable, of course.

The Nintendo Switch community’s biggest question has little to do with the console itself, however. Instead, they’re enamored of the T-shirt designer Shigeru Miyamoto wore in the audience, which bore a Mario in a samurai outfit. (The love for Miyamoto’s sartorial choices has spread to the Twitter-sphere too.)
i love that miyamoto's clearly enthusiastic about his new t-shirt pic.twitter.com/RccUQSV3z4
— Ori-Warui (@oleivarrudi) December 8, 2016
Users wrote that maybe it’s a sign of things to come in the new Super Mario game, which we saw the most briefest of glimpses of in the Nintendo Switch reveal trailer. Maybe it’s just a really rad shirt, said others.
Shirt aside, more concrete details about the Nintendo Switch are coming on Jan. 12, and Nintendo has said that the console itself will be out by the end of March 2017.

[h=1]Report: Nintendo Switch runs 40 percent slower undocked[/h]

[h=2]Sources suggest you may want to keep the handheld plugged in[/h]

The Nintendo Switch may allow players to both take it on the go and hook it up to the TV, but Digital Foundry reports that those looking to get the most out of the upcoming console should consider leaving it in its dock.
Citing several unnamed sources, the the tech-focused imprint at Eurogamer suggests that the undocked Nintendo Switch hits clock speeds 40 percent lower than those the system is capable of when connected to the dock. While the available CPU and memory controller speeds remain the same regardless of configuration, Digital Foundry’s sources say that GPU speeds change drastically between the two modes.
No matter which way players use the Nintendo Switch, the system may not reach the full potential of its Nvidia chip. The console reportedly uses some variation of the Tegra X1, the power of which we assessed in detail earlier this year. (Nvidia later confirmed that the Switch would use a “custom Tegra processor.”) While the X1 chip is capable of 1 GHZ speeds — as seen in the company’s Shield tablet — the Nintendo Switch will only ever hit 768 MHz at best, according to Digital Foundry. That’s less powerful than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which should come as no surprise to those following Switch rumors over the past year.
Although the hardware profiles differ between Nintendo Switch’s two configurations, sources suggest that developers can choose to rein their games in as to keep gameplay and graphics consistent whether the console is docked or not. That may mean that Nintendo Switch games may not always live up to their full potential when it comes to performance.

That there’s what looks to be a fan on the Nintendo Switch tablet itself could suggest alternate methods of increasing clock speed when playing it portably, however. As we reported shortly after the console’s reveal, it appears as though there are cooling vents on the top of the tablet. Whether that’s what these grills are hasn’t been confirmed, but it’s possible that, if they are used for keeping the tablet cool, internal fans could help to maximize its performance potential.

Like much with the Switch, that’s speculation. Digital Foundry and parent site Eurogamer have led the charge with Switch rumors, most recently reporting that GameCube games would finally debut on the console’s Virtual Console. We’ll hear more about the Switch come mid-January, when Nintendo takes it on the road for a hands-on preview tour.

You should take expectations of a Nintendo newly-named Switch console with the power of Sony’s current PlayStation 4 or even Microsoft’s Xbox One and let them go now, in all likelihood. Back in...

[h=1]Nintendo Switch accessories unveiled at CES[/h]

[h=2]Snakebyte’s range ship this spring[/h]

Nintendo Switch foldable headset and starter kit, along with a power adapter and extension cable for the NES Classic are on their way this spring from hardware and accessory company Snakebyte. The company detailed its new range of products at CES this week in Las Vegas.

The Nintendo Switch Foldable Headset features 40mm drivers and folds up when travelling.
The Nintendo Switch Starter Kit includes a carry bag, stereo earbuds, cleaning cloth, screen protector, control caps and game cases.

The Nintendo NES Classic Edition Power Adaptor accepts the USB cord from the NES Classic console and allows users to draw power from any regular power outlet.
The Nintendo NES Classic Edition Gamepad Extension Cable adds 9.8 feet to the relatively short included Gamepad cable for the NES Classic.
Nintendo’s upcoming Switch console will be detailed during a live presentation from Tokyo on Jan. 12 starting at 11 p.m. EST.

The company is expected to deliver more details about the hardware, which serves as both a home console and portable console, during the “Tokyo webcast.” Among the news still waiting to be delivered are basics like the cost of the system and exact day in March the system is launching.
The next day, Nintendo is hosting a five-hour Switch event in New York City in which it will “further emphasize some of the details that Nintendo plans to announce.”
In October, Nintendo released a video unveiling the hybrid system. The Switch features two removable Joy-Con controllers that straddle the system’s screen and a dock that allows the system to connect to a television.
There’s more we don’t know about the system than we do. A series of patent applications filed by Nintendo also show some promising features that could be coming to the system including a gyroscope, GPS, touchscreen, compass, motion tracking, image recognition and the ability to project images onto a flat surface or hand.
We’ll be on site at the New York City event with all of the news live, so make sure you check back next week.
