[h=1]A reviled Nintendo Switch menu icon is finally better, one year later[/h]
[h=2]Snake Pass gets a big update, but the icon matters most[/h]

What may be the most notoriously maligned Nintendo Switch home menu icon has finally been updated, more than a year after its game launched. A big update for the throwback platformer Snake Pass is out now, adding a sizable new mode — and reverting its garish icon back to its original, much prettier one.
Developer Sumo Digital released a time-based arcade mode as part of a free update for the game today, which launched almost exactly a year ago on consoles and Windows PC. That’s all well and good, but the real meat here is the new Switch icon that accompanies the Arcade Mode Pack download.
While Snake Pass launched in March 2017 with a clean, colorful version of its promotional artwork as its Switch home menu icon — its logo prominently placed amid other eye-catching visuals — Sumo Digital inexplicably changed the artwork to something more generic. As part of a feature update last June, the developer introduced a new icon that resembles the simplistic icons commonly used for mobile titles.
The logo Sumo Digital switched to last June. Abload.de via RedditThis irked the Switch fanbase to a surprising extent, with Snake Pass owners demanding that the studio undo the change on Reddit and Twitter. Sumo Digital later promised that it would tweak the menu icon once again that September — but it wasn’t until the past week, perhaps in anticipation of Snake Pass’ first anniversary, that the company seemed to tease that promised change of artwork.
Several pixelated images appeared on the game’s Twitter account, with the most recent posted last night. The grand reveal has yet to occur, but the teasers sure do look like the game’s updated Switch icon.

And that icon, by the way, is familiar; it closely resembles the original one.
Much better. Imgur via RedditAs strange as this “controversy” may seem to outsiders, it’s important to note that Snake Pass kickstarted a trend among Switch owners about preserving their home menu’s sleek aesthetics. If a Switch game has a lackluster, unspecific icon, you best believe that the developer will hear about it until it’s changed. The good news is that it’s not uncommon for fans to commend the designers who understand the importance of presentation.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch Online service will include cloud saves[/h]

[h=2]The Switch feature fans have been asking is coming[/h]

Nintendo will bring cloud saves — the option to upload game save data to the internet — to the Nintendo Switch later this year when the company’s paid online service launches.
According to the official Nintendo Switch Online website, save data cloud backups will let Switch owners save their data for easy access. But as is typical of Nintendo, details on how cloud saves will work on Switch is still unclear. “Details about this feature will be available before the paid service launches in September,” Nintendo says on its website.
It looks like a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online will be required if you want some cloud-based backup. Nintendo’s online service will cost $19.99 annually, and the company has a handful of subscription options:

  • Monthly - $3.99
  • 3 Months - $7.99
  • 12 Months - $19.99
Nintendo is also offering a Family Plan for $34.99 per year. With that plan, Nintendo says, “you can share the Nintendo Switch Online features across all the Nintendo Accounts in a family group by purchasing a family membership.” The option to create a family group of Nintendo Accounts will launch next week, according to Nintendo’s FAQ:
Starting May 15, 2018, it will be possible to create a Nintendo Account Family Group via your Nintendo Account settings. Up to eight Nintendo Accounts (including child accounts) can be linked as a family group.

[h=1]Switch Online trial will come free with Japanese Splatoon 2 bundles[/h]

[h=2]The online service will roll out in September[/h]

To commemorate the first anniversary of Splatoon 2, Nintendo is releasing a specially colored Nintendo Switch and Splatoon 2 bundle, which includes a ticket for a three month Nintendo Switch Online personal plan.
Nintendo Switch Online rolls out this September and will be the first premium Nintendo online service. Games like Splatoon 2 that rely heavily on online multiplayer will be heavily affected, since players will now need an Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to participate in online multiplayer. Previously, online multiplayer was offered for free.
In addition to online multiplayer, Nintendo Switch Online will offer a library of 20 old NES games and the ability to (finally) save game data to the cloud. Not all Switch games will require the online service to play multiplayer online, but it’s very likely that Nintendo’s own games — including Splatoon 2 — will need it.
Though it does have a single-player expansion, Splatoon 2 is Nintendo’s most multiplayer-focused game. When Nintendo Switch Online officially rolls out, Splatoon players will need to pay an additional subscription fee in order to continue playing the game the way that they have been. But this bundle is a small sign of encouragement: For three months, at least, newcomers to Splatoon can enjoy the game without the fee. Hopefully this means that other multiplayer-focused games, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Arms, will also receive their own bundles with a trial for the premium service.
The online service has multiple payment plans, with personal ones priced at $19.99 (12 months), $7.99 (three months), and $3.99 (one month). Family plans, which will allow eight people in total to access the Switch Online service, will be priced at $34.99 per year.
As of right now the Splatoon 2 bundle is only available in Japan and will retail at 35,960 yen starting July 13.

Maybe they should actually focus on making their online infrastructure more secure against hackers if they are gonna start ripping off fans for it.

Yeah there are a good number of games that I am yet to play on my switch (Splatoon, Bayonetta, Octopath etc) but the price of the new cartridges is pretty expensive (close to 7k) and the second hand market is virtually non existent. I always prefer playing legit but Switch is an exception and I hope the hack is out for my FW soon.

[h=1]The Nintendo Switch has sold close to 20M units, but what does that mean?[/h]

[h=2]Nintendo is making another play for the mainstream[/h]

In its latest quarterly earnings report, Nintendo announced that it has sold 19.67 million units of the Nintendo Switch as of June 30, 2018. That number may not mean much without some context behind it, but the short version of this story is that Nintendo’s hybrid portable/console is doing very well for the company.
We’re going to compare the Nintendo Switch’s sales to sales of the PlayStation 4 — and explain why that’s an imperfect comparison a bit later — to try to get some idea of how the Switch is doing in the marketplace.
Sony’s own numbers indicate that it had sold 73.6 million units of the PS4, this generation’s best-selling console, worldwide through Dec. 31, 2017. That means that Sony has sold approximately 18.4 million units per year since the PS4’s launch. That’s a very rough estimate — and it assumes that sales have been uniform since the console’s debut in November 2013 — but it gives us some idea of what the market leader looks like in terms of raw sales.
This tweet from GoNintendo puts things in even better perspective, and suggests that the Switch is selling as well as, or better than, the PS4 at this point in its lifespan:

Here's yet another look at how well the Switch is doing. After approx. 16 months, PS4 had sold 20.2 million units worldwide. As for Switch, the system has sold 19.67 million units in approx. 15 months. The PS4 did this with 2 holiday seasons, while Switch has gone through 1.

But there are more reasons to think that the Switch could best the PS4’s sales in the long term. Players know how they’re going to interact with it, and outside of families upgrading into a PlayStation 4 Pro, there are few reasons to think there will be more than one PS4 per household.
Nintendo, meanwhile, has been open about the idea that families can, and very well may, buy more than one Switch.
“The marketing strategy going forward is to instill a desire to purchase Nintendo Switch among a wide consumer base in all the regions of Japan, the US, and Europe,” Nintendo creative fellow Shigeru Miyamoto stated earlier this year. “Our ultimate ambition is for a Nintendo Switch to be owned not just by every family, but by every single person.”
[h=2]WHAT IS THE SWITCH COMPETING AGAINST?[/h]This is the question that comes up when we try to give some context to the hardware sales numbers. The Switch is not a traditional console, and it doesn’t feel like a handheld. You can’t put it against smartphones, for example, because it doesn’t also include necessary functions such as making calls, texting or taking pictures.
Comparing sales of the Switch to the PS4 might give us the best general yardstick to put Nintendo’s numbers into perspective, due to Sony being the current market leader in console sales. But it’s nowhere near an apples-to-apples comparison.
In truth, Nintendo is mostly competing against itself. Since its March 2017 launch, the Switch has already surpassed the lifetime sales of the Wii U and GameCube. Nintendo has releasednine of the top 10 best-selling games for the Nintendo Switch to date, meaning that Nintendo is able to compete with Sony in hardware sales while remaining its own best developer and publisher.
And all this is happening before the launch of the latest Smash Bros. title, and before we have any solid information about a mainline Pokémon game for the Switch. There’s no reason to believe that hardware sales are going to slow, and new buyers this year and during the holiday season will undoubtedly want to pick up the existing Mario and Zelda titles for the system, too. Nintendo’s short-term outlook is pretty impressive, despite the likelihood thatthe Switch will ultimately cannibalize the company’s 3DS business.
Nintendo created a new market category, and is reaping the rewards. The Nintendo Switch isn’t a gimmick, and sales aren’t limited to existing Nintendo fans. The success of the hardware has proven that there are no rules on the path to mainstream acceptance.
