[h=1]Nintendo Switch eShop dominated by ’90s throwbacks this week[/h]
[h=2]An homage to Sonic the Hedgehog and Metroidvanias lead the charge, plus one of the year’s best indies[/h]

Nintendo already teased a number of new game releases earlier this week, as part of a showcase highlighting some of the best “Nindies” heading to Switch over the next year. Some of those are already on the eShop this week — like Into the Breach, a beautiful strategy gameand one of 2018’s critical darlings — and they’re joined by several other small titles worth your attention.
That includes two games that wear their influences proudly. The Messenger, out today, is built on the familiar Ninja Gaiden formula from the NES-era — before deviating from that genre to follow the Metroidvania schema instead. Combined with its visuals, The Messengeris a love letter to two of the most popular, old-school styles of gameplay. But, as we noted inour review, the switch from traditional action combat to the recently revitalized Metroidvania-style play makes this ninja adventure game far more interesting than its initial veneer suggests.
Freedom Planet, meanwhile, may have been something you’ve played before. The platformer launched first on Windows PC back in 2014, with ports to other systems steadily launching over the years since. But the Switch version comes at an interesting time. Developer GalaxyTrail, which funded Freedom Planet through Kickstarter, originally built Freedom Planet as a more straightforward take on a classic Sega Genesis game: Sonic the Hedgehog. But the developer moved away from producing a fangame and instead introduced original art and characters into what remained a Genesis-style platformer.
With pulls from the classic Treasure-developed shoot-em-ups as well, Freedom Planet felt like a refreshing return of a nostalgic era. In 2014, this felt especially revelatory to some reviewers, who maligned the modern Sonic the Hedgehog games. Cut to 2017, however, when Sega released Sonic Mania, the first Sonic game in ages that captured the magic of those older Genesis games. Does Freedom Planet still stand out now that there’s a true Sonic successor out there? It’ll be interesting to see how it plays on Switch as a result.
The rest of the list has some other good picks: There’s Mini Metro, which has been regularly honored for its fantastic puzzles and art design; and another nostalgic game, The VideoKid, which looks like Back to the Future with the endless runner-esque gameplay of the classicPaperboy.
The full lineup is below.

[h=1]Undertale comes to Nintendo eShop next week, and you have no excuse not to play[/h]

[h=2]The latest Nintendo eShop update is led by an all-time great[/h]

As Nintendo fans speculate ahead of today’s Direct presentation, don’t forget that the Switch eShop received its regular weekly update as per usual. While the list may not be full of the big surprises Nintendo likely has in store for us this evening, there’s one game absolutely worth your attention.
Undertaleis out next week on Nintendo Switch, completing the trifecta of console ports for the unforgettable role-playing game. Almost three years since launch, the game continues to capture the attention of newcomers — and get recommended regularly by its cavalcade of fans.
There are lots of reasons to attribute that to, and I feel wrong picking just one. But Undertaleis one of those RPGs that solidify the genre as one of the medium’s best: It has characters, each one with a distinct personality, no matter how much time you spend with them; it’s funny, and it’s dark, and it’s sweet all at once; the combat is unique in a way where it feels familiar, but you have never played anything like it.
Who thought that a bullet hell-esque RPG where it’s encouraged not to attack, but to defend against every enemy — sometimes requiring you to compliment or tell a joke to them — would make sense? Apparently Toby Fox, its creator, did, and its a formula that works wonderfully and may never be replicated.
And don’t even get me started on the music.
Clearly I’m a big Undertale fan, as were select members of Polygon when it first launched. That was back in 2015, and our affection for this strange and self-assured little game has only grown. We don’t know if Toby Fox will ever give us a follow-up, and getting Undertale’s perfect ending (if you play it the right way) means you may never want to run the risk of overwriting your save file. But the journey here is what matters, and it’s wonderful.

Need a game to tide you over on Switch until one of those fancy titles announced in today’s Direct comes out? Choose Undertale when it launches Tuesday, Sept. 18. You’re welcome.
Here is the full list of games out on Nintendo Switch eShop now through Sept. 19:

[h=1]Nintendo eShop adds Valkyria Chronicles 4, Cities: Skylines and more this week[/h]

[h=2]Tons of new titles timed to release during the Tokyo Game Show[/h]

This week the Nintendo eShop adds a ton of new titles with a massive glut of game releases timed to coincide with the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) convention.
Among the high-profile titles for the Nintendo Switch are Valkyria Chronicles 4, featuring full western localization, which will be available on Sept. 25. Cities: Skylines — Nintendo Switch Edition, a new console port of the popular city builder, is available right now as isFinal Fantasy 15 Pocket Edition HD.
Fans of the Xenoblade series will be happy to know that Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna — The Golden Country comes out on Sept. 21 as its own standalone game. It’s been available as an expansion since Sept. 14.
Rounding out the list of headliners is The Gardens Between, an adventure puzzle game from the Australian indie team The Voxel Agents. Polygon’s review called it “a satisfying story that offers challenge, escapism and magic.”
But Nintendo isn’t stopping there. There’s 28 additional titles available now or in the next few days on Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo 3DS, conspicuously, has nothing new on offer.
Here’s the complete list:

[h=1]Dragon Ball FighterZ, Mega Man 11 lead this week’s Switch eShop update[/h]

[h=2]It’s another big week for older games[/h]

Nintendo Switch owners have a lot to look forward to in this week’s eShop update, starting with the Switch release of Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball FighterZ, which is available now, and Capcom’s Mega Man 11, which launches on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
This week, Switch owners also got access to Arena of Valor, Tencent’s popular and free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena game. EA Sports FIFA 19 is also available to download on Switch, as of today, Sept. 28.
Switch owners who prefer their games old and pixelated are well served by this week’s eShop update. Neo Geo shoot ’em up Cyber-Lip and Nintendo’s Excitebike join Hamster’s Arcade Archives lineup. And Sega kicks off the Sega Ages line on Switch with two Genesis titles: the original Sonic the Hedgehog and shooter Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar (akaThunder Force 4).

[h=1]Super Mario Party shines in low-key week for Switch eShop[/h]

[h=2]This weekend, it’s time to party[/h]

It’s a party up in Nintendo Switch eShop this week, thanks to Mario Party’s first Nintendo Switch game. Super Mario Party is the biggest name in a lineup that consists of few in-demand titles, although it’s actually not the only party game hitting the storefront.
Fun fact: There are three different “parties” on the eShop as part of this latest update. We’ve got Hardway Party, which is a bridge-building party for cars. It’s an arcade racing game, based on its description, although there are also missions involving dragons and zombies. This sounds like a party with a certain kind of attendee in mind.
If that’s not your type of party — and no party is, in fact — there’s also Party Crashers, which is ... also a racing game. Apparently this is actually the week of vehicular hangouts, since this is a game where tracks are foiled by bananas and cars destroy each other on the track.
For those of us who like a more traditional good time, there’s obviously Super Mario Party. We’ve had a lot of fun with the game already, calling it the freshest take on the formula in several years. New modes capitalize on Switch technology better than expected, and even the frustrating board game bit feels more fun thanks to a new array of mini-games.

[h=1]The World Ends With You tops this week’s big Nintendo Switch eShop update[/h]

[h=2]Tons of games are coming to Switch this week in all kinds of genres[/h]

October is already set to be a busy month for games (hello, Red Dead Redemption 2), but Nintendo doesn’t seem to care. This week on Nintendo Switch eShop, there are several games worth checking out, from a classic RPG to an arcade-sports favorite and even a slightly oddball Nintendo-Ubisoft collab.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix is a remaster of Square Enix’s Nintendo DS game, available on a console for the first time. The Nintendo Switch exclusive reimagines what was a unique combat system, along with receiving new content and co-op play. But this is otherwise the same fashionable-as-heck RPG, borrowing Shibuya street style to craft one of the most memorable settings in recent years. (Also, The World Ends With You: It’s good.)

A hard left turn isStarlink: Battle for Atlas, an action game from Ubisoft that’s reminiscent of Star Fox. It probably helps that Nintendo once again teamed up with the publisher to bring Fox McCloud into the Switch version of Starlink; there are several levels based around the pilot, and you can even play as Fox in his famous Arwing for the full game. Yeah, there are other customizable ships, and the main storyline has little to do with Star Fox, but we haven’t had a good game in that series in a while, so we’ll take anything Fox-related that we can get.
Other games include the fifth edition of The Jackbox Party Pack, which we’ve already spent some time with; NBA 2K Playgrounds 2, for those who like their basketball players tiny; and ports of mobile-favorite Game Dev Story.

[h=1]Dark Souls leads this week’s Nintendo Switch eShop update[/h]

[h=2]More modern classics get ported to Switch[/h]

After a bit of a delay, Dark Souls: Remastered is coming to Nintendo Switch this week. FromSoftware’s challenging action role-playing game is just one of a handful of modern classics that are making their way to the Switch.
This week’s Nintendo Switch eShop update also includes ports of Sega’s tactical role-playing game Valkyria Chronicles and award-winning puzzle game The Room. The eShop also welcomes back Ubisoft’s venerable dancing game franchise with Just Dance 2019, available digitally starting Oct. 23, and the new game from Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro’s White Owls studio, The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories.

[h=1]Nintendo eShop gets heroic arrivals with Lego Harry Potter and My Hero One’s Justice[/h]
[h=2]There’s also a few Wii U titles in here[/h]

Get your little Lego wands ready — the remastered complete collection of Lego Harry Potterfinally arrives on the Nintendo eShop on Oct. 30. Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7 covered their respective movies and books, giving a whimsical Lego twist to some beloved Potter moments. Previously available on PlayStation 4, the remastered collection of those games will soon be available for Nintendo Switch.
Also arriving for Nintendo Switch is arena fighting game My Hero One’s Justice, based on popular manga and anime My Hero Academia. Players will be able to choose between heroes and villains, picking from favorite characters including Deku, All Migh and Shigaraki. Careful if you’re not caught up, though — the game contains some anime spoilers!
That’s just a hint of all the sweet titles hitting eShop, which include Just Dance 2019 for Wii U and a game where you play as a struggling Parisian artist. Check out the full list below:

[h=1]This week’s Nintendo Switch eShop update brings ports for everyone[/h]

[h=2]From the dark Diablo 3 to the fun party game Brawlhalla, there’s something for everyone[/h]

This week’s Nintendo Switch eShop update adds a wide variety of ports of favorite games. Regardless of what kinds of games you like, there is probably something on this list for you. There is a lot of other good stuff to fill that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate void until its launch, after Nintendo pumped us up for it this morning.
Diablo 3: Eternal Collection launches on Nov. 2 with a lot of bonuses based off of The Legend of Zelda series. You can have a Cucco companion, a Triforce portrait frame and a special transmogrification set that allows you to wear Ganondorf’s armor. The Switch version of Diablo 3 is a great, portable way to play the classic game, so if you’re itching to grind, this is for you.
Coming to Switch on Nov. 5 is Moonlighter, a beautiful pixel-art game, where you collect loot from dungeons and play the market, selling them in your own shop. You adjust the prices to find the perfect amount to sell your treasures for and you get to fight monsters in a dungeon. It isn’t tremendously long, but there are lots of ways to play and beat this game, making it a good bite for the Switch. (One day I’ll get the achievement for beating all the bosses with the broom. Today is not that day.)
World of Final Fantasy Maximais on Nov. 6. This is an expanded version of 2016’s World ofFinal Fantasy, which is what you get if you combine Pokémon with Final Fantasy. You add familiar monsters and heroes to your party and use them in turn-based combat. The catch is that all these allies have different sizes and you have to ... stack them on top of each other? You have to distribute weight from the monsters well, or else they’ll topple over and cost you in a fight. It’s certainly a cute take on Final Fantasy and could be for you, if you’re itching for an RPG to play.
Other favorites coming to Switch include Brawlhalla, which is a Smash-like multiplayer fighter game, and Transistor, a beautiful indie puzzle game that just about everyone on the planet loves.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch eShop brings back Taiko no Tatsujin and a heavy dose of SNK nostalgia this week[/h]

[h=2]It’s time to play some virtual drums[/h]

It’s a slow week for big-name releases on the Nintendo Switch, but a new game in the Taiko no Tatsujin (a.k.a. Taiko Drum Master) rhythm game series is always a big deal for fans.
Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! has already been released for $49.99, and while it doesn’t look like there will be a drum peripheral for the Switch released in the U.S., tapping along using the buttons or swinging the Joy-Cons is an acceptable substitute. The inclusion of Splatoon’s Inkling and Kirby, as well as songs from Nintendo games, helps make the Switch version special. There are also plenty of party games included to play with friends, if you have enough Joy-Cons to go around.
If you’ve never tried a Taiko title before, prepare to be overwhelmed by the cute visuals and bright colors of this very cheery, and satisfying, game.

SNK 40th Anniversary Collection will be out on Nov. 13 for $39.99 and includes 14 classic games, with 11 more planned for release on Dec. 11 at no additional charge. The star of the show here is the preservation effort that went into some of these rare games and sharing information about the past of SNK, as the collection takes great care in how it presents these pieces of history.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch eShop has a stellar week, from Pokémon to Civ 6[/h]

[h=2]Two franchises make their Nintendo Switch debut[/h]

Pokémon: Let’s Go! is one of the stars of Nintendo’s holiday lineup, but for those who aren’t so much into the classic JRPG franchise, there’s plenty else going on this week. Nintendo Switch eShop’s update bring several games with recognizable names, from Sid Meier’s Civilization and Warframe.
The big highlight is Let’s Go!, of course; it’s the first full entry in the mega-series developed exclusively for a console. It has its pros and cons, per our review, but it’s still an excellent Pokémon game worth your attention. Both Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! editions go live on eShop Nov. 16.
Civilization 6 has garnered widespread acclaim since its launch on PCs in 2016. It’s since made a successful transition to mobile; its iOS version launched nearly a year ago. Now, the latest member of the major turn-based strategy game series is making its console debut. A Nintendo Switch port will be on sale Nov. 16, and it will include all previously released updates. There will also be four more civilizations, leaders and scenarios to choose from.
Warframe, a game that took us some serious time to fall for — four years after its initial release — is the latest free-to-play online game to head over onto Nintendo Switch. It’s a co-op sci-fi action game, all centered around collecting armor and weapons for your ninja-like super-soldier. That’s out Nov. 20.
The rest of the list is wonderfully diverse as well, with several card games and a port of that strang YouTubers Life simulation game. This one’s called the OMG Edition, which, OMG. I think I wanna try it out? Check everything else that’s new below.

[h=1]This week’s Nintendo eShop update is the quiet before the storm[/h]

[h=2]We’re eight days out from Nintendo’s last big game of the year[/h]

This week’s Nintendo eShop update is light on new Switch games, filled mostly with ports and smaller titles. The reason seems obvious: Arguably the biggest Nintendo Switch game of the year is out next week — it’s called Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — and at this point, it’s probably best to just stay out of its way.
There’s at least one notable newbie: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is out Dec. 4, about a month after its originally scheduled release date. It’s the latest attempt at reviving Sega’s classic platforming series Wonder Boy. DotEmu published a remake of Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon’s Trap last year, and Monster Boy also draws upon that old game. First announced in 2015, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is considered the first canonical entry in the Wonder Boy franchise since 1994, when its last game launched.
Retro adventure game Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery EP and the serene Abzu are some of the bigger-name ports coming to eShop this week. Here’s everything else that’s arriving between now and Dec. 5:

[h=1]Smash Bros. dominates Nintendo eShop this week, but don’t forget this other classic[/h]

[h=2]Katamari Damacy rolls in quietly too[/h]

To most people, Dec. 7, 2018, means one thing:Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
These people are not wrong. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is excellent, and it’s easily the most buzzworthy first-party Nintendo game of the month, if not the year.
But these people would be sorely remiss to throw all their eggs into the Smash Bros. basket, because Bandai Namco slips in a gem of its own onto Nintendo Switch eShop that very same day. Katamari Damacy Reroll is a port of the venerable PlayStation 2 game, one of the most original of its era — a game whose quirkiness has been hardly matched since.
While there are some differences between the PS2 version and the Switch version that may be off-putting to original Katamari fans, we feel it’s wrong to complain. Another place to play Katamari, even if it’s nothing new, is never a bad thing. The Switch’s portability means we can even roll on the go, a rarity for the franchise. (Previous handheld iterations do not deserve further mention here.)
This HD upgrade of the classic puzzle-action game — where the tiny Prince of Cosmos must collect junk to recreate the stars his father destroyed — may not be perfect, and it won’t generate the same fervor as a new Super Smash Bros. That’s understandable. But Katamari Damacy feels just as special as the once-a-generation Smash Bros. games do. Let’s not forget it in all the hustle.

[h=1]Donut County, digital comic service InkyPen come to Nintendo Switch[/h]

Switch owners also have a new digital comics reader in InkyPen, a subscription service that includes comics from publishers like Dark Horse, Valiant, IDW and Titan. On the retro front, two Arcade Archives games, SNK’s Metal Slug 5 and Athena, are also available on Switch.

[h=1]Dynasty Warriors 8 and Donkey Kong Jr. round out a quiet Nintendo Switch eShop update[/h]

[h=2]Make sure you get your Piranha Plant for Smash Bros. Ultimate as well[/h]

Nintendo isn’t releasing many new games for Switch this week, giving players who may have received the hardware as a present time to get caught up on games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The biggest release of the week is probably Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition, which comes with all the downloadable content from previously released versions of the game. This $39.99 release is just the thing if you want to make sure you get everything with one purchase.
You’ll also want to make sure you register your copy of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate if you haven’t already, since you only have until Jan. 31 to claim your free Piranha Plant fighter.

[h=1]2019’s first Nintendo eShop update adds Fitness Boxing with perfect timing[/h]

[h=2]The game that’s going to hold us to our New Year’s resolutions[/h]

Nintendo’s first round of new games on the Switch eShop for 2019 is small, but its headliner is an appropriate fit. Fitness Boxing is the standout addition this week, a workout game that will force us all to stick to our biggest New Year’s resolution.
A Wii Fitsuccessor of sorts, Fitness Boxing pairs the Joy-Con controllers with mid-2000s pop music (not-recent hits include Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger,” Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” and Justin Bieber’s “Baby”), as on-screen coaches yell at players to punch harder at the screen. It’s a little less charming in design than Nintendo’s classic exercise game, but in the absence of Switch Fit, Fitness Boxing seems like a fun way to avoid going to the gym while still getting off our butts.
The full list of games, which also features the classic The King of Fighters 2002, on Nintendo Switch eShop this week is as follows:

[h=1]Nintendo eShop update delivers double the Mario Bros.[/h]

[h=2]New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for Switch and Bowser’s Inside Story for 3DS drop this week[/h]

The Nintendo Switch eShop is back in full swing this week with a fresh batch of new (but also not so new) games for the Switch, including New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. Both games come to Switch on Jan. 11.
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe includes the Wii U platformer and its New Super Luigi Ufollow-up along with new content: Toadette and Nabbit are now playable characters. It’s one of the first great games of 2019, we said in our review of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.
The Definitive Edition of Tales of Vesperia brings updated HD graphics, new music tracks, mini-games, bosses and unreleased costume content to Bandai Namco’s decade-old role-playing game.
Beyond the Switch eShop, another Mario Bros. classic, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, makes the leap from Nintendo DS to Nintendo 3DS this week. Nintendo’s re-release of the 2009 game includes a new chapter, Bowser Jr.’s Journey, as part of its updated content.

[h=1]Nintendo eShop update features No More Heroes’ return[/h]

[h=2]Travis strikes again on Switch this week[/h]

Nintendo Switch eShop plays home to a familiar name in games this week: Travis Touchdown, the Japan-obsessed antihero of Goichi “Suda51” Suda’s No More Heroes series. Grasshopper Manufacture’s Travis Strikes Again is the buzziest name on the new releases list, an otherwise light load.
Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes isn’t a sequel to the older Wii games, so much as another adventure into Travis’ trademark imagination (that of a very horny otaku). This time, he’s fighting his way through levels inspired by an abundance of indie games. Expect references to faves like Hotline Miami and Hollow Knight, as well as all kinds of fandom odds and ends. This is Suda’s love letter to the industry, in a sense, even if it’s more fun in theory than practice.
The rest of the new games list through next Wednesday, Jan. 23, is below:

[h=1]Nintendo eShop update gives smaller games the spotlight[/h]

[h=2]No big marquee release this week[/h]

It’s the quietest week of the year thus far on Nintendo Switch eShop, with a handful of tinier games leading the pack of new releases. Not that there aren’t things to look forward to on the list: There are plenty of games that puzzle fans, goat lovers, and nostalgic grown-ups might want to check out.
Pikuniku is an adorable puzzle-platformer starring a red oval with legs, who explores an adorably strange world to ... start a revolution against a dystopian government? It’s a very bizarre pairing — puzzles and cuteness and conspiracy plots — and I am very here for it.
There’s also Goat Simulator: The GOATY, which its developers call “the latest in goat simulation technology.” If you’ve played Goat Simulator before, you know what to expect from this physics-based destruction sim. If you haven’t, well ... that’s all you need to know. If you like goats, you will like Goat Simulator.
I’m showing my age here, but also tucked into this week’s update is Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, a platformer I distinctly remembered Nickelodeon plugging hardcore as a kid. It first launched on GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox back in 2003. I’m not sure who still harbors much fondness for this old THQ game, but bringing it back a few months after its 15th anniversary will likely delight some people ... I assume.

[h=1]A 3DS cult fave drops into light Nintendo eShop update[/h]

[h=2]A good time for roguelike fans[/h]

It’s yet another tepid week on Nintendo Switch eShop, but the release of beloved vertical shooter Downwelland Advance Wars-style game Wargroove lead a handful of titles worth checking out — as does a lone 3DS game to be excited about from Atlus.
Downwell first launched way back in 2015 on both iOS and Windows PC, becoming a near-instant cult favorite. One-man team Ojiro “moppin” Fumoto drew inspiration from games like Spelunky and Cave Story to craft the unique platformer-meets-roguelike-meets-vertical shooter. Armed just with a pair of gunboots and a strong stomp, the player descends through a lengthy, procedurally generated well in an effort to stay alive. The Switch is the just latest console Downwell has launched on; most recently, it came to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2016.
For something new, there’s strategy RPG Wargroove, which we enjoyed for its wonderful characters and engaging tactical combat. It fills the void left behind by Intelligent Systems’ Advance Wars series, which hasn’t seen a new game release since the Nintendo DS days.
And there’s even one thing for the Nintendo 3DS lovers among us. Atlus, still dedicated to the handheld, released Etrian Odyssey Nexus this week. It’s the latest in the long-running dungeon-crawling RPG series, and the first new game since 2017.
Below is the full list for the update. And under that, check out Nintendo’s retrospective of the best games to launch on eShop in January 2019.

Is it just me or people lately seem to defend every bad game design decision made by the devs and try to give bullshit reasons for that? Or perhaps it's because I'm on reddit and discord :ROFLMAO:
