[h=1]Mario's Picross and The Lost Levels Plus More Up for Grabs Via Club Nintendo[/h]

New rewards are now live on America's Club Nintendo rewards program, offering a few digital games for Nintendo 3DS and Wii.

Club Nintendo members can exchange 100 coins for a copy of Mario's Picross for the Nintendo 3DS or 150 coins for Starship Defense.


Wii players have the option to receive Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels for 150 coins or Balloon Fight at 200 coins. Though the rewards page specifies that these games are available for Wii U, going to the rewards page for The Lost Levels includes language intended for the Wii. Balloon Fight appears to be for the Wii U, however.

These rewards can be obtained from now until January 12.

[h=1]New Nintendo eShop Sale Offers Two Games for Two Dollars for Two Days[/h]

Nintendo is celebrating the holidays with some cheap games starting today. For every two days, there will be two games at an affordable price of two dollars each on the Nintendo eShop.


Right now, Nintendo users can grab Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge for the Nintendo 3DS and Mega Man X for the Wii U at $2 each. The games are normally sold at $3.99 and $7.99 respectively.

The current deal will be active until December 18, 8:59 am PT. A new pair of games is expected to prop up on Wednesday.

[h=1]Club Nintendo is Offering "The Year of Luigi" Exclusive Figurine[/h]

The calendar year for "The Year of Luigi" is coming to a close and Club Nintendo is going out with a bang with this new exclusive figurine, now available for pre-order on its website. The figuruine is based on this year's Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.


"Scare up some ghostly fun with this exclusive figurine The Year of Luigi will keep haunting you well into 2014 with this Luigi figurine inspired by the Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon game."

The pre-order cost for the reward comes to a hefty 1500 coins. Nintendo says they'll arrive in March 2014 should you decide to pre-order it.

[h=1]Nintendo eShop Down for Maintenance Later Today, Company Posts IT Architect Job Listing[/h]

Nintendo will be taking the eShop services offline for the Wii U and 3DS later today, as announced on Twitter. The eShop will be temporarily offline between 4 pm ET and 4 am ET later today, amounting to a 12 hour offline period.

The company apologizes for the eShop connection problems since Christmas day. "We know this is taking longer than expected, but finding a solution is our top priority." Nintendo has delayed the launch of the Pokemon Bank and Transporter apps until the Nintendo Network has stabilized.

Meanwhile, Game Informer reports that Nintendo is seeking someone to fill in an IT Architect position at the company, which includes "optimiz[ing] systems design across technology areas for future flexibility, performance, multi-tier behaviors, capacity, and scalability." It seems like Nintendo recognizes that they lack the expertise to handle these type of problems, so it can only mean a good thing looking forward.

[h=1]Nintendo Explains Online Services Downtime[/h]

The Nintendo Network has been experiencing some online pains since Christmas day which most speculated to be new users trying to get on the service to download updates and content as well as creating new Nintendo Network IDs for the company's online platform. Nintendo has now recently explained the reasons for the downtime in a Facebook post. Check out the notice below:

Thank you very much for your patience while we perform maintenance on the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Network. We sincerely appreciate your ongoing support. We wanted to share some details on what is causing this downtime, and update you on the current outage in service.
The initial outage was primarily caused by a one-time surge in demand over the recent holidays, compounded by the following:
1) An influx of new Nintendo Network accounts being created and accessing the Nintendo eShop.
2) Existing Nintendo 3DS account information being moved to new Nintendo Network accounts.
We are continuing to adjust our network to meet the needs of all our services and applications. To ensure our global audience has an expected level of consistency in service, we took the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS offline. We expect to have it back online no later than 4 a.m. ET on Dec. 29, but may have to perform more maintenance in the future.
We truly apologize for the inconsistencies in our online services. We are working hard around the clock to fully restore these functions, and will continue to keep you updated on our progress.

Yesterday, Nintendo announced that the eShop would be available on December 28 until 4:00 pm ET. As of now, the Nintendo online status page reveals that all services are operational. Though as they mentioned in the Facebook post, additional maintenance periods in the future may occur.

Each GBA VC game will be sold for $6.99-$7.99 each and includes off-TV play, Restore Points to allow for save states, and Miiverse functionality.


Also coming in April will be the NES version of Super Mario Bros. 3 for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Both versions will sell for $4.99 each.

This stylish Legend of Zelda carry case recently showed up on Club Nintendo's rewards catalog in Europe.



Featuring the Hylian Crest from The Legend of Zelda series, it's about seven inches long (19.5cm x 12cm x 6.5cm). It also sports two slider grips; one is stamped with a Zelda Heart Container emblem, the other with the Club Nintendo logo.

Nintendo's copy-writers suggest that the nylon case is "just the ticket" for carrying a 3DS with some games, or toiletries or stationery.



Club Nintendo is a rewards scheme that allows fans to trade loyalty tokens for digital and real goodies. The carry case costs 4,000 stars.

[h=2]Club Nintendo offers a set of Super Smash Bros. Posters[/h]


Super Smash Bros. still has 19 days before it launches on Wii U, but Nintendo is offering a set of three posters to Club Nintendo members with 700 coins to spend.


All three posters are 22-by-28 inches and feature original art inspired by the upcoming game. You can get a look at the full-size versions at the link; the themes are Animal Crossing, a Super Mario Galaxy-esque gathering of characters, and an anime-style poster featuring Link and Palutena from Kid Icarus.




"Coins" are the currency of Club Nintendo, which doles them out for things like taking a customer satisfaction survey about a game or a hardware purchase. Coins also earn members Gold or Platinum status, which also results in a freebie sent out around the end of the year.

Nintendo Switch eShop updated this week to add a new section: Games on Sale. It’s a seemingly minor change that, when you think about it, says a lot about what Nintendo is doing with its hybrid console.

Imgur via RedditFor one, the company is starting to slowly catch on to how to run the storefront in a way that best serves its customers. Of course the eShop should have a place where we can find what’s on sale; that’s a common, expected category. Although the area is sparse right now, with nearly 500 Switch games already available, we expect the section to eventually become a useful place to sift through for some good deals. Other updates post-launch include a top sellers chart, another simple but effective filter.
On the other hand, the operative word here is “slowly.” Nintendo really is taking its time befitting the Switch with all of the features we expected it to have, right out of the gate. Its online service still hasn’t launched in full, but we do at least have voice chat; the Virtual Console remains a big question mark; a Miiverse replacement seems unlikely as the months continue on.
But hey, at least the Nintendo Switch eShop has a sales section now. That’s definitely progress in the right direction, small it may be.

Nintendo Switch eShop’s final 2017 update goes out with a whimperThis week’s Nintendo Switch eShop update — the last one of the year — is a bit disappointing compared to recent weeks. But, in fairness, the eShop has received more than 50 games throughout the month of December, so consider this week’s dearth as encouragement to plow through your backlog.Most notable this week is the release of SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition, an updated version of the fan-favorite, turn-based strategy game. This marks SteamWorld Heist’s Switch debut, two years after it first won acclaim on Nintendo 3DS. The Ultimate Edition includes the game’s previously released downloadable content right out of the gate, as well as a new campaign.SteamWorld aside, things are ... pretty dry out there. Nintendo’s pumping up some of last week’s late-breaking releases, including Arcade Archives VS. Super Mario Bros., an $8 re-release of the arcade-exclusive version of Super Mario Bros. While it’s easy to see this as a pricy port of a widely available game, VS. Super Mario Bros. is infamously tougher than the NES original. There are fewer collectibles, even early on in the game, and enemies are way more durable.The game launched on Switch eShop on Dec. 22, just before Christmas, but if you missed it over the holiday period, VS. Super Mario Bros. is both a rare port and infuriatingly tough, by most accounts.Otherwise, check out previous weeks’ updates and pick up something new. Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is a Zelda-esque role-playing game that’s winning a lot of praise since its launch last week. I’m personally still obsessed with the hidden-object puzzler Mom Hid My Game!, which is so endearingly silly and fun despite its brevity. I’ve heard some very good things about the unique rhythm game Floor Kids as well.And hey, if you haven’t beaten The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild yet, there’s always that, too.

The narrative game includes a huge cast of characters, as well as “B-side chapters” to give players extra challenges. We’ve played it, and will have our review up soon.Pokémon Crystal Version was first introduced on the Game Boy Color in 2000. This port for the 3DS includes a few new features, including male and female avatars and additional animations. It’s also available in 2D through the Virtual Console service. After last week’s small-ish update, Nintendo Switch eShop has received what may be more high-profile games than any of us know what to do with. Between an exciting re-release, a totally new property and then some, Switch owners may find themselves either making a tough, miserly choice ... or just shelling out a bunch o’ cash.
First thing’s first: Bayonetta and its sequel launch on Switch this Friday, Feb. 16. This is a major deal for both fans of these action games already and anyone interested in getting in them, now that we know a third entry is coming. While Bayonetta 2 brought the first game along for the ride when it launched as a Wii U exclusive, the Switch version gives owners a chance to replay them on the go — and playing around with the witch’s extremely rad gunboots and punishing weave in public.
If you buying both games through the eShop (at any point; not just at the same time), you’ll get them at a discounted price. We’d be remiss not to mention that these Bayonetta ports don’t differ much from the Wii U versions, as far as we know, however. But to have the full series on one system will be nice, although Bayonetta 3 is still a ways out.
And now for something completely different: Electronic Arts’ pretty platformer Fe isn’t a Switch-exclusive, but it’s a fitting release for the console. Players embody a fox ... thing (?) that uses an intimate connection with the natural world to explore. We have yet to discovermuch more of Fe’s secrets and world quite yet. It’s also out on Feb. 16.
The rest of the list is below, and you’ll recognize a few other names on it: We dug Old Man’s Journey when it hit PC and mobile platforms last year, and Puzzle Puppers was one of our favorite indie games of 2017. Layers of Fear: Legacy, meanwhile, is a hard left turn from the rest, in that it’s an extremely disturbing horror game. But the Switch eShop doesn’t discriminate, clearly — especially not this week.

It’s a marked change from Volume, Bithell Games’ stylish stealth adventure from 2015, but Subsurface Circularis just as worth a playthrough.
There’s also a Switch version of A Normal Lost Phone, the first in a pair of mobile games that turn your smartphone into someone else’s. Taking possession of an unlocked, abandoned phone, you sift through its files and applications to figure out who and where its owner is. It may sound voyeuristic — especially since A Normal Lost Phone’s story deals with a teenager’s disappearance — but we still found the Lost Phone games to be some of 2017’s most fascinating. (It’ll be interesting to see how the smartphone interface translates to Switch, though.)
And then there’s Detention, a Taiwan-based horror game that has only grown its cult fan base since it launched last January. Survival horror somehow seems scarier when it’s presented as a 2D side-scroller, and this one has some creepily beautiful visuals to boot. On Steam, more than 5,000 reviewers have highly recommended this game for how it turns its high school setting into an absolute nightmare.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch eShop update brings the cuteness and the waterworks[/h]

[h=2]Kirby’s here — and so is one of 2017’s most underrated, moving games[/h]

This is a Nintendo eShop update that fans can get sucked into — because there’s a new Kirby game out this week, his first for Nintendo Switch. (Get it? “Sucked into”? Because Kirby? Oh my god I’m so sorry I don’t know why I’m like this.)
While Kirby Star Allies, out on March 16, is an obvious choice to headline the latest batch of Nintendo Switch eShop games, there’s at least one other game worth our attention that shouldn’t get lost in the fold. Last Day of June launched on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC last year to critical acclaim, but its new Switch version gives those of us who missed out a second chance to discover it.
Last Day of June is a story-heavy adventure game about death and time travel. It’s incredibly sad, especially if you’ve ever loved and lost. But it’s not one of those indies that forgoes engrossing gameplay to tell that moving story. Last Day of June is rife with puzzles to solve, challenging players to become more involved in its big-headed characters, watercolor world and dialogue-free writing. And as our reviewer put it last year, “There’ve been maybe five games in my life that have made me cry. This is one.”
The friendship-focused Kirby Star Allies might make us cry too, since it’s all smiles and hugs and sweets. What we appreciate most, though, is that Kirby’s cutesy multiplayer titleis launching alongside this devastatingly sad indie that we may have missed out on. This seems like some good counter-programming on Nintendo’s part.

Detective Pikachu and Outlast 2 make an unlikely pair in this week’s Nintendo eShop update



This is not one of those peanut butter and chocolate situations

Nintendo’s Nindies independent game showcase may have been brief, but this week’s eShop update runs long.
The big release this week is Detective Pikachu on Nintendo 3DS. That game stars the pint-sized yellow Pokémon as a gumshoe, complete with a dashing deerstalker cap. From our story in February:

We already know that a deep-voiced, English-speaking Pikachu travels with teen boy Tim to help out a variety of Pokémon in need. (Tim’s mostly in it to get this Pikachu to find his missing father, which ... well, we’ll just go with it.) But it sounds like Tim is getting a bunch of the credit for Pikachu’s work — work that involves an absurd amount of dancing Pokémon, solving jigsaw puzzles and, uh, even invading other Pokémon’s privacy.

Detective Pikachu will be available on March 23.
All the way on the other end of the spectrum is Outlast 2, a game that gave our reviewer serious and actual panic attacks. This horror game pits an independent cameraman against a Jonestown-esque religious cult in the search for his abducted wife. The game — which is absolutely not for children or, possibly, anyone who attended Catholic school — will be available for Nintendo Switch on March 27.

Nintendo Switch eShop doesn’t have a ton of exciting new games out this week — no offense to perfectly serviceable arcade ports, like Johnny Turbo’s Arcade: Bad Dudes andArcade Archives: Punch Out!!. But there are ongoing eShop sales that are worth taking a look at, making this week a better time to pad out the missing pieces of your Switch collection.
Highlights among the games on sale include Snake Pass ($9.99, down from $19.99), a platformer whose recent update brought a new mode and a much nicer home menu icon;Thumper, the intense rhythm game that continues to entrance us ($11.99, down from $19.99); Kamiko, a short action game that features some beautiful pixel art ($2.99, down from $4.99); and The Jackbox Party Pack 2, the best of the series and an essential multiplayer game ($16.24, down from $24.99).
Many of these sale prices are only good through 12 p.m. ET today, although some extend through next week. Check out the Nintendo eShop sales page for the whole list.
