Hello there my friends. I'm going to give my 2nd year papers (Pre-Engineering) in a few days and then it will be time for Conscript to go to a University. So people living or studying in Islamabad and Pindi or within a 50 mile radius please give some suggestions on the best Universities and the degrees that are the most in demand. I'm looking do engineering. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The BEST institute in your area would be National University of Sciences & Technology aka NUST. It has ALL kinds of engineering disciplines BUT u'll get admission only if u r top of the line student and have an IQ high enough to top their entrance test. So, your FIRST preference should be NUST, as it would be close to our home. The field of study depends on your interest.
Electrical Engineering (Power or Communications)
Computer Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Mechatronics Engineering

Other than that, they offer Aerospace Engineering in their Risalpur Campus.

Your second preference SHOULD be COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad which has REALLY grown in reputation lately. You should be able to get on the merit list of this institute.

Your another second and final preference should be GIKI (Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences & Technology, Topi, NWFP) which is a private institute located in the remote city of Topi, which is 30km from Attock I guess. It is NECK on NECK with NUST but again, u'have got to be best to adjust with the rest. People from all over the Pakistan & overseas Pakistanis live their in dorm rooms. It is THE next-generation institute.

Other than that, there are no topline institutes for Engineering in Islamabad/Pindi cities. But the reality check is that, it doesn't matter anymore which university you get into. If you know how to get the work done for your employers, they will hire you. They wont even bother to see your resume. The thing is that, in Pakistan, a big approach, jaan pehchaan, and a little bit of luck all combine to guarantee u a job in Pakistan. Employment in Pakistan is unfair system.

Still, NUST & GIKI have prestige. While CIIT should be your second preference. GIKI is kind of better than NUST cos NUST relies on prestige instead of their professors & students.

I myself am a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (Communications) from NWFP University of Engineering & Technology, Peshawar. I too lived in a hostel & am going for MS. Alas, there is no UET in Islamabad/Pindi area coz people of Lahore & Punjab prefer UET, Lahore over NUST or anything, people of Karachi prefer NED UET over PNEC(a NUST college in Karachi). Still, if u cant get into NUST or GIKI. COMSATS IIT is the way to go.

Every field is in most demand. If u can excel or master ANY field, it'll pay u off in hefty sums. So, go for anything that interests u.

If u need more info about engineering fields. Let me know.

Thanks a lot dude. I think I'll be trying for NUST in their Aeronautical engineering. Can you tell me whether AIR is good or not.

PS. There is no rep button. So a verbal thanks for now will have to do.

Air University is good.
A couple of my friends are there.
Plus my brother is doing MS in Mechatronics from there.

He was offered a job as a lecturer, but he turned it down.
Anyways, its a good uni. The teachers are quite good at what they do.

They keep the undergrad students at a distance, but once you get to the masters level, they become more friends than teachers :)
The point is, they are good. You will get all the help you need.

Its ok brother. Dil mei thanx hone chahiye. 4get about the button. The best institute for Aerospace is College of Aeronautical Engineering (CAE), Risalpur which is in turn a campus of NUST. Its actually the only quality institute for Aerospace.

If u go for Aerospace (my personal favorite), then u'll only be able to get jobs in Pakistan or Middle-east. The Americas & Europe will NEVER EVER hand over their aircrafts to a Pakistani. That was a friendly advice brother.

BTW the word Conscript means a person who is drafted into military. Why not military then brother?

Half my family is in the military. My grandfather served in her majesty's Royal Indian Air Force and then opted for Pakistan and served Pakistan. But the armed forces don't really appeal to me. Well neither does engineering but a guy's gotta eat and pay for his gaming needs. I'd rather be something like a free lance journalist or an anthropoligist or work for an activist group. But alas Pakistan mein yeah cheezein pay acha nahi kartein or na hi well respected hain.

Well thanks for the advice Raptoria and Ask.

Although it seems the answers has already given in a nice manner by raptoria and I can only add one thing which my late grand father told me that do the thing which interest never do anything that doesn't interest you. The reason he said the thing in which u r interested u'll find it exciting and u'll attract towards it more than anything and the thing in which ur not interested or u r force to do or there is no freewill involved in it than avoid it sooner or later you'll feel to quit it and that will be a waste of time as well as energy.

So in short brother this is time for u to choose your direction of life from this point u'll mark ur profession so think twice and go for the field which interest you.

i second that. if you want to go into journalism, you could. it pays pretty well these days. you're not going to be a crime reporter if you have a degree.

Thanks Beloshi and Bobama.

The Journalists you are talking about are Hamid Mir and Talhat Hussein. Ordinary reporters get paid real bad.

move to karachi, join SSUET, and i'll rag the shit out of you for the lulz
You know I'd rather cut open my wrists and bleed dry. :p

Ragging is a culture. Its not meant to offend personally. Its fun for both seniors and newcomers. I've gone thru the worst ragging of all time but in the end, its a gr8 experience. There are a few truths to living a University life. If u haven't experienced those, then u have experienced only a part of it.

Rule # 1 > Live in a hostel. Hostel life is 50% of the university life. Day scholars are deprived of it.
Rule # 2 > Be a victim of horrible and severe ragging.

There are many many more rules to list. For now, 2 would be cool enuf.

If you looking for money ... why not accounting ? Its one of those few things that will always have worldwide demand.
Accounting u mean CA & ACCA. or Business AdministratioN ? If CA than it not a piece of cake its tough , yeah if its Business Admin that its fairly normal. and no doubt it has lot of scope around the world.

i'd recommend GIKI ut most important of all dont let others tell you what you should or should not be doing. you will make good money wherever you go. people pay their employees for what they are worth. you put in the hard work and youll get the rewards no matter who or what you are.
