The Peacock network has cancelled Bryan Fuller’s acclaimed, lush thriller, TVLine has confirmed. The show’s current third season — slated to wrap up in late August — will be its last.
“NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared, and kept us on the air for three seasons despite Cancellation Bear Chow ratings and images that would have shredded the eyeballs of lesser Standards & Practices enforcers,” Fuller said in a statement. “[NBC president] Jen Salke and her team have been fantastic partners and creatively supportive beyond measure.
NBC issued its own statement, saying, “We have been tremendously proud of Hannibal over its three seasons. Bryan and his team of writers and producers, as well as our incredible actors, have brought a visual palette of storytelling that has been second to none in all of television — broadcast or cable. We thank Gaumont and everyone involved in the show for their tireless efforts that have made Hannibal an incredible experience for audiences around the world.”
I'm just devastated. Emptiness. This show was one of the best around crime dramas with a superb psychological thriller feature. Season 3 is going to be really tough to watch now. Personally this is worse than the Terriers cancellation. But really what a show Bryan Fuller and the writers gave us. I'm always going to remember the absorbing atmosphere, production value, beautiful cinematography, and the horrors they entertained us with.

Thankyou so much Hannibal, Will Graham and the team.

WHY?? WHY??????

FUCK YOU NBC!!

This is one of the most criminally underrated show currently. Deeply saddens me that something of this quality is being cancelled.

The best crime drama on TV right now is cancelled. WHAT THE FUCK
it is not a crime drama... that genre is reserved for criminal elements... this is a serial killer show... technically it can be called a crime drama but it is a whole separate genre

Show deserves top marks for production values but I felt the producers unnecessarily prolonged sequences and over-convoluted the plot, for whatever reason. So I'm not surprised at the less than stellar reception which led to its cancellation.

Red Dragon was supposed to be Season 5, no? It should have started with Season 2 because the foundation had been laid already.

[h=1]‘Hannibal’ Season 4: Bryan Fuller Teases ‘Cool’ Plans[/h]

TV writer-producer Bryan Fuller has spent much of his career jumping from one critically-acclaimed show to the next. After a four-year stint on Star Trek: Voyager in the late ’90s, Fuller would go on to create three fan-favorite shows: Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies. Each of them quickly became cult hits, but surprisingly, none of them managed to last as long as Fuller’s current (and perhaps most well-known) series, Hannibal.
Yet, it seems that Hannibal has also now reached its end. After three short seasons, NBC announced today that Fuller’s psychological thriller won’t be coming back next year. There’s a chance that the series could find a home on another network, but for now these final ten episodes of season 3 could be the last time viewers see Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy as Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham.

But Fuller isn’t letting the news get him down. Instead, he already has season 4 all mapped out. Should producer Gaumont be able to find another place for the drama, Fuller is ready and eager to get down to business. And speaking to TVLine about the cancellation, Fuller couldn’t help but reveal a few tidbits about his future plans:
My idea for Sseason 4 was perhaps one of the coolest yet. So I would love to do it in some capacity. It would have explored the Hannibal-Will Graham relationship in a much deeper fashion than the series ever has before.

Hannibal and Will Graham have been at the center of the series for the past two years, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon. While Fuller doesn’t get into details about season 4, he’s already talked a bit about it in the past. The first half of season 3 will tell the story of Hannibal in Florence, and the second half will follow the events of Red Dragon after a time jump. The season 3 finale is reportedly another game-changer, so don’t expect anything to be wrapped up by the end, which will lead into a completely new and different season 4.
On next season, Fuller recently told fans at the ATX Television Festival in Austin: “It’s an even bigger re-invention of this show than this season, so hopefully we will do it and, if not, maybe a movie and, if not, maybe a comic book and, if not, I’ll tell you about it at a convention.” His plans included further exploring the story by adapting “something from the book that hasn’t been done.” Yet in true Fuller-style, it’ll be done “in a crazy way” by taking “the seed of something from the book and completely reinventing it.”
Fuller has done a great job with the show so far, and hopefully fans will get to see his new idea brought to life in one way or another.
Hannibal airs Thursdays @10pm on NBC.

[h=1]‘Hannibal’ Producers in Talks with Netflix & Amazon for Possible Renewal[/h]

Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal TV series – an adaptation of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter books – has been one of the most exciting and creative and visually resplendent TV shows to ever hit the airwaves. It’s just such a shame that not many people have watched it over the past three seasons, which prompted NBC to cancel it last week.
But that doesn’t mean there’s no hope for a season 4. Fuller has talked pretty openly about his desire to move forward with the show, potentially on a separate network or streaming platform. The question is, is that a serious possibility or just wishful thinking?

Well, according to Fuller – who discussed the topic with Variety – it’s a very real possibility, as the producers of the show have apparently already talked with Amazon and Netflix. Said Fuller:
“I know there have been discussions on a couple of fronts with Netflix and Amazon. But I believe our deal with Amazon precludes a Netflix component, so I think Netflix, who has expressed interest and has expressed great enthusiasm for the show… I don’t think contractually with our Amazon contract, they can pick up the show.”
While it certainly wouldn’t be the most natural fit for Hannibal to jump to Netflix without seasons 1-3 of the show in their library, something similar has happened before. Indeed, Hulu has exclusive rights to seasons 1-5 of Community, and yet Yahoo! Screen paid for the recently released season 6. Netflix could do the same thing and either buy out Amazon for the rights to seasons 1-3 or wait until their contract for the show was up. That doesn’t mean they will, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Having said all that, it would seem that Amazon is more suitable at the moment for bringing the show to their burgeoning streaming platform. Amazon ranks #2 behind Netflix in terms of original streaming content. And while a few of their shows have been critical darlings, none of their shows have been massive breakout hits in the vein of House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, and Daredevil. Taking on Hannibal, which has a very devoted fanbase, could help boost the platform’s visibility.
Securing a season 4 for Hannibal isn’t a foregone conclusion, though. Said Fuller:
“All I know is that things are being discussed with venues to see how interested they actually are. I don’t know to what extent. Without an NBC component, it’s a little complicated. Even some of our international partners, because there’s no NBC component, will pass on a fourth season.”
Well, that’s a bummer.
As for what a season 4 might entail, Fuller had the following to say:
“I don’t know how much darker we can possibly go. The concept for the season 4 arc is one that is inherently twisted, but also such a dynamic shift from where we were the first three seasons that there is also a broadening of the palette to include a lot more humor. The planned arc for season 4 is a very exciting one, so I would love to see the show continue, whether it be as a series or even condensed into a thriller as a film, as well. But with any of these things, it’s so hard to predict which way interest would fall.”
Bryan Fuller has talked about wanting to incorporate Clarice Starling and elements of Silence of the Lambs, but so far, MGM has not relinquished (or agreed to lease) those rights. Regardless, if Fuller is able to move forward with Hannibal – either as season 4 or as movie – you can expect it unlike almost anything else on TV or in film today.
What say you, Screen Ranters? Do you want to see Netflix or Amazon pick up Hannibal? Drop us a line in the comments.
Hannibal airs Thursdays @10pm on NBC (for now).

[h=1]‘Hannibal’ Creator Says Season 4 Would ‘Reinvent’ The Show[/h]

For three seasons, Hannibal has offered up spectacular weekly helpings of psychologically disturbing violence, sumptuous meals prepared from human remains, and unique performances of familiar characters like Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) and Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). At the center of this abstract, often narratively muddled show is Bryan Fuller, a veteran showrunner who also worked on quickly canceled series like Pushing Daisies and Wonderfalls.
Fuller and his team got a blow this week when NBC announced that it will not be airing Hannibal past its current season. But this isn’t the end of the road for one of TV’s most disturbing shows ever. Unlike most network shows, Hannibal is co-financed by an international production company that handle the production and business side of the show, while NBC primarily handles distribution. In other words, as with many recently canceled shows like The Mindy Project and Community, Hannibal is not canceled so much as homeless until further notice.

In an apparent attempt to drum up support and interest in Hannibal season four, Fuller has been making the rounds offering his thoughts on the possibility of renewal and his plans for future seasons. He offered Vulture more insight on that matter, claiming that season four would be a departure from what fans are used to on the series (which is constantly evolving anyway):
Season four would be a reexamination and reinterpretation of the Will Graham–Hannibal Lecter relationship in a fashion that is unlike anything else we’ve done in the show. So it is, in many ways, a whole reinvention of the show, in an exciting way. And if it weren’t for the appeal of that, I would be very fine with saying, “Season three, really strange season, something to be very proud of,” and just letting it go at that.
But that the idea that I have for season four is so terrifying creatively, and also inspiring, that I feel like, “Well, let’s explore the possibility of an off-NBC season four,” because I would get a chance to work with Hugh and Mads again, and all these other great actors in these roles, and also challenge myself and the writers to do something that is once again completely different from what we’ve done in the previous three seasons.
Fuller also said his role as co-showrunner on Starz’ upcoming Neil Gaiman series adaptation American Gods does not preclude him from returning to Hannibal. It might, however, mean that a fourth season of Hannibal will be delayed by a few months (so that Fuller’s American Gods responsibilities don’t distract him from his Hannibal duties).

One place that Hannibal won’t end up, though, is Netflix. Amazon currently owns exclusive streaming rights to the first two seasons, which would put Netflix in a difficult position if it made a play for a new season of the show. Fuller has informed HitFix that he thinks there’s a 50 percent chance Hannibal will find a new home for season four, citing Amazon as an obvious possibility. He also clarified that rights issues surrounding the Clarice Starling character – who Fuller wants to incorporate into his adaptation of Thomas Harris’ universe – played no role in NBC’s decision to drop Hannibal.
Hannibal is one of the best and most unusual shows on television. It would be a shame to lose it, and it would be nice from a fan and viewer perspective if the show returns in a new home. On the other hand, the show has already skirted every possible boundary of content restriction (and gotten away with things that other network shows never have). It’s already a minor miracle that the series has lasted this long. As long as Hannibal continues on its outre paths, Fuller will have much to be proud of (regardless of a renewal or lack thereof).
Hannibal season three airs Thursdays at 10pm on NBC.
