I'm thinking of buying Samsung Galaxy Nexus (will most likely buy it today). Is there any reason or problem in the handset why I should not? And what other alternatives should I consider?

Regards

Oops sorry my bad. Google devices are the best to go for, this is what I have learned from my android experience as you get regular updates all devices.

I would prolly buy a nexus device as well in near future.

Most of the problems you'll face with the device will most likely be the Software Ones. And they can be easily solved by updating your device to 4.0.4.

Other than that , its a fine purchase in this price range.

An alternative would be a Galaxy S2, which can be bought for even lesser price if bought in used.

However, if you really feel the need for an alternative then aim higher, for HTC OneX or a Galaxy S3.

I'm not considering Galaxy S2 at all (even though I know it has better performance than Galaxy Nexus). I sold Galaxy S because I got tired of that shape. ALL Samsung android phones look too similar in my opinion and they should hire (or kidnap :ninja:) designers of Sony to make better looking phones. Galaxy Nexus is also made by Samsung but it looks much better than other Samsung phones as it is quite different.

As an alternative I don't want to consider Galaxy S III. Being too expensive is not even the main reason (it's the second reason :wink2:). I just don't like its shape. It's too similar to Galaxy Nexus but the hardware keys and glossy materials only make it look worse (in my opinion). And it actually made Galaxy Nexus look much more up to date then it actually is by using similar non plus version of SAMOLED and similar shape.

Now, HTC One X is surely a very tempting choice. I know it has a crappy camera compared to Galaxy S III (or compared to almost all non HTC 8mp cameras). But to be honest I like it more than Galaxy S III. In my opinion it's better than Galaxy S III in terms of shape, body materials and graphics processor (I know Galaxy S III performs better, but will Galaxy S III GPU have any games exclusive to it?). But the price difference between One X and Galaxy Nexus is too much right now. And then there is the allure of getting software updates as and when they come instead of waiting for months and even then not getting the latest version. This is the most important reason why I'm interested in Galaxy Nexus. If One X was also a Google phone, I would pay the higher price to get all the advantages One X has over Nexus. But in this situation we don't get only the advantages, but a big disadvantage as well.

Well with One X you get a phone that
  • Looks stunning
  • Incredible screen. Best ever on a smartphone
  • Good camera. Camera on Galaxy Nexus is atrocious
  • Better hardware
You can always root your phone for up to date software.

Well, looks are obviously subjective. Good looks are indeed an advantage of One X when compared to galaxy S III. But I don't consider One X better looking that Galaxy Nexus. They both seem at par to me as far as looks are concerned. Sometimes One X looks better, on other occasions Nexus looks more attractive.

  • Incredible screen. Best ever on a smartphone
Can't argue with that. I like screen of One X more than screens of Nexus and Galaxy S III.

  • Good camera. Camera on Galaxy Nexus is atrocious
Camera is not a consideration in my decision. My current phone (Xperia Ray) has a pretty decent camera. So far I have taken hardly one dozen pictures with it.

  • Better hardware
Definitely a plus. Screen and better hardware (particularly GPU) are the reasons why I find One X so attractive. But are these two reasons (with screen not being too big an advantage) enough to justify a price difference of more than 13k? I don't want to spend more than 40k on a mobile (to be honest even 40k is too much for a mobile in my opinion :$)

It's certainly an option. But official updates sound so much better :D

don't rely on custom ROMs for future updates, One X doesn't have a great dev community and in addition AOSP ROMs are always extremely buggy on HTC phones excluding Desire and Desire HD.

Nomad!

I just listed Galaxy S2 as an option. Many people dont like it because of the shape, but the fact that it has 90% of the software enhancements from Galaxy S3 successfully ported to it, encourages many people to buy this, especially in its current price range which in some cases have fallen even below 30k.

Why I consider OneX a brilliant phone? umm ... probably because its cheaper than Galaxy S3 :p. Seriously though, i think for the price ... it packs a punch.

For Galaxy S3, please dont judge the phone on its pictures. I have seen the Pebble Blue & White ones in real life, and pictures dont do them justice. (The plain back indeed is stupid, but i am fine with that, as the Galaxy S also had the same plain back). The only thing stopping ME from buying a Galaxy S3 is ... well, the Insance Price tag :looking:

If you are concerned with faster updates, then nothing can match the awesomeness of a Google Device. It definitely has its shortcomings though, No MicroSD for instance. But again ... for the price, its not much of a problem.

The one X main weakness is battery life but then again I havent heard good things about the galaxy nexus battery either. Galaxy S3 has much superior battery than both.

My main problem with one X is what HTC has done with the software. In order to preserve ram and battery life HTC has implemented their own task killer which kills apps when you wouldnt really expect, so many people have complained about it and there seems to be no solution. HTCs new skin is just too resource hungry it seems. When I buy a quad core phone I sure expect it to give killer multi-tasking which the one X simply doesnt.

Another problem with the one X is this,

Do you see the black(grey) bar with a menu key? Thats right it will pop up in 99% of games and apps because HTC brilliantly decided to use an on-screen menu button with rest of the buttons being off-screen.

And what makes it worse? That it uses an LCD screen which means the menu bar doesnt blend in with the bezel and it just sticks out as an ugly grey bar. Yes whatever anyone has to say about the display of one X it is till nevertheless an LCD unable to display black color. Imagine playing a colorful vivid game with that horrid grey bar at the bottom? Doesnt sound exactly good to me.

I think thats not HTC's fault but more ICS fault. Anyway, in One V you can hide that menu bar by long pressing the multi-tasking button. I'm sure you can in One X too.

It is not ICS fault, you either use on-screen buttons like galaxy nexus or use a dedicated menu button like the galaxy S3. I dont know last time I read a thread at xda there was nothing a non-rooted user could do about it, maybe you used a rooted one V?

No it was unrooted and even the little HTC tips in the phone mentioned that you can hide the menu button by long pressing multi-tasking button.

The problem you see there isn't with HTC, it's with the app that is not updated for Ice Cream Sandwich. There's no use of a menu button on Angry Birds, but because the app is written for Gingerbread, it sees the lack of a menu button and instead creates this software menu button instead. Click it, nothing will happen. It's the same for the Facebook app, but there it needs a menu button. If the app was updated for ICS, the menu button wouldn't be there and instead would be part of the software, just like in the default Google apps for ICS.

It's all about developers not really giving a shit about Google's design choices. When they will, which they will, the menu button on Galaxy SIII will be a useless button.

No even for apps that have a menu button at the top the menu bar shows up on the one X...yes it's useless but its there. On the S3 samsung could simply update it to make the menu button a multi-tasking button when all or most of the apps have gone the ICS way.

What is peoples obsession with Battle Royale genre. 6 minutes to find a match, 3 minutes to setup a match, 2 minutes to land, 10 minutes for scavanging maybe 2 3 gunfigts and its over. Multiplayer landscape is looking absolute dogshit.
I tried playing Apex Legends once. Couldn't find a gun for 5 minutes straight. If I found a gun, I couldn't find the right ammo for it. Got killed fighting with my fists. Uninstalled it the next day.
