James Wan's Mortal Kombat movie reboot will reportedly film in Australia, with pre-production set to go ahead this month. The 2D fighting game Mortal Kombat first appeared back in 1992, and quickly became one of the most popular arcade games of all time thanks to its frenzied action, array of exotic characters and selection of devastating finishing moves. Home versions of the game soon popped up on video game consoles, and the series is still going strong into 2019, with the last installment, Mortal Kombat 11, arriving in April.
The first movie version of Mortal Kombat came way back in 1995, with futureResident Evil helmer Paul W.S. Anderson in the director's chair, and a cast that included Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Christopher Lambert and Talisa Soto. The film went on to gross $122 million worldwide, and was followed by the sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation as well as the TV spinoff series Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm and Mortal Kombat: Conquest. Efforts to get a new movie reboot off the ground kicked off in 2011 with New Line Cinema tapping Kevin Tancharoen (Fame) to direct. Tancharoen would eventually leave the delayed project however, and New Line would bring in James Wanas producer, with Simon McQuoid later joining as director.

The latest update on Mortal Kombat indicates that things are moving forward quickly on the reboot film, with a shooting location now chosen. As reported by ABC Adelaide's Claire Campbell, the premier of South Australia Steven Marshall announced in a press conference that Mortal Kombat will film in the province, and indeed will be the largest movie ever made there, with the local economy benefiting to the tune of 580 jobs and $70 million in revenue. The film reportedly will go into pre-production beginning this month.

Story details for the new take on Mortal Kombat are not yet known, but back in July 2018 a character breakdown was revealed that indicated the movie would revolve around a new character named Cole Turner, and would also include a 14-year-old version of the video game character Raiden. However, the breakdown was later claimed to be false by producer Todd Garner. Back in March, a report surfaced saying Joel Edgerton is being sought to star in the movie as video game character Kano.

It remains to be seen what exactly Wan has in store for the new reboot ofMortal Kombat, but there's no doubt the producer has a solid track record with action, having directed the blockbusters
Aquaman and Furious 7. The firstMortal Kombat movie may have been a solid hit at the time, but fans don't necessarily remember it very fondly today, and are hoping the next cinematic take on the beloved video game title does a better job of delivering the bone-crunching goods.

[h=1]New Mortal Kombat movie casts The Raid actor as Sub-Zero[/h]

Casting for the MK reboot is off to a great start

The first role cast for the new Mortal Kombat movie is promising: Joe Taslim, known for this martial arts action work in movies like The Raid will play Sub-Zero, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Taslim had starring roles in The Raid as Sergeant Jaka and The Night Comes for Us as Ito, and featured in two Hollywood blockbusters: Star Trek Beyond and Fast & Furious 6. The Indonesian actor/martial artist will join the production when it starts filming in Australia later this year.
James Wan (Saw, Aquaman) is producing the new Mortal Kombat, with commercial director Simon McQuaid directing. In addition to commercials for Netflix and Duracell, McQuoid directed the “Michael” ad for Sony’s PlayStation 3, in which characters like Nathan Drake, Kratos, and Solid Snake praise a heroic player named Michael, and Halo 3’s “Enemy Weapon” spot, in which two elderly former UNSC soldiers wax nostalgic about the futuristic weapons of war.

Writer Greg Russo wrote the script for the newMortal Kombat, which may diverge from the fighting game franchise’s lore in some interesting ways. Hopefully it gives Sub-Zero — who was killed by Liu Kang and a bucket of water in the original Mortal Kombat movie — plenty to do, given Taslim’s casting.
Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema division has been trying to reboot the Mortal Kombat movie franchise for the better part of the last decade. Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen was once attached to the project but dropped out in 2013. In 2015, New Line brought in director James Wan to produce the reboot, with writers Dave Callaham (Doom, The Expendables) and Oren Uziel (Mortal Kombat: Legacy, 22 Jump Street) attached to write. Russo wrote the most recent version of the script.
New Line produced two films based on the Midway fighting game franchise in the ’90s:Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Warner Bros. released two seasons of the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy in 2011 and 2013, based on the success of Tancharoen’s unauthorized short film, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth.

[h=1]The new Mortal Kombat movie will be rated R, writer says[/h]

A violent game franchise will get a violent movie adaptation

While the Mortal Kombat video games are infamous for their graphic violence, the movies based on the franchise have been comparatively tame and bloodless. The upcoming cinematic reboot of Mortal Kombat, however, will be rated R, according to the people making it.
Screenwriter Greg Russo, a self-professed fan of the Mortal Kombat franchise, confirmed the film’s intended R rating on Twitter, adding that the series’ gory fatalities will appear onscreen.

“Since it’s already been stated by other members of the team, I’m gonna put this one to bed,” Russo said. “MK WILL be R-Rated and for the first time EVER, FATALITIES will FINALLY be on the big screen (and no I’m not gonna say which ones) You’ll just have to wait for the movie & see!!!”
The vast majority of Mortal Kombat video games have carried an M rating — Game Boy ports and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe being some of the rare exceptions — but 1995’s Mortal Kombat and 1997’s Mortal Kombat Annihilation had box office-friendlier PG-13 ratings. (New Line’s direct-to-video cartoon Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins was even tamer and rated PG.) We can likely thank the box-office success of violent R-rated films likeDeadpool and John Wick for Mortal Kombat’s adherence to the games’ level of blood and guts.
Mortal Kombat is slated to hit movie theaters on March 5, 2021. James Wan (Saw,Aquaman) is producing the film for Warner Bros.’ New Line, with commercial director Simon McQuaid directing. Filmmakers recently announced that Joe Taslim (The Raid, The Night Comes for Us) will star in the film as Sub-Zero.

[h=1]Mortal Kombat Movie: Ludi Lin In Talks To Play Liu Kang[/h]

Ludi Lin is in talks to play Liu Kang in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie produced by James Wan. The fighting video game has already been put to the big screen twice before in 1995 and the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. After over two decades on the shelf, New Line Cinema is gearing up to reboot the franchise.
The new film is directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Greg Russo, and the latter has been teasing a proper adaptation of the violent video game this time around. The movie is going to have an R-rating and include game accurate fatalities for its cast of characters. With the movie gearing up to start filming, the focus of the Mortal Kombat team has been on casting. The first casting announcement came a few weeks ago when The Raid's Joe Taslim joined as the film's Sub-Zero.

According to a new report from Variety, New Line and the Mortal Kombat team are talking to Ludi Lin about joining the cast. Lin has not officially signed on at this point, but he will play the role of Liu Kang if a deal is made. Kang is one of the original seven characters from the very first Mortal Kombat video game and was played by Robin Shou in the original film adaptations. Mortal Kombatis set to hit theaters in March 2021.

Lin is still a relative newcomer to acting, but the martial arts specialist has quickly found himself involved in some high profile work. His biggest role came in 2017 when he played Zack the Black Ranger in Power Rangers. From there, he joined the cast of Aquaman in a small role, which is where he first worked with Wan and may have given him a leg up in possibly landing this new role. Lin also recently appeared in the "Striking Vipers" episode of Black Mirror, where he played a kung fu fighter named Lance in a video game.

With his charisma, Lin is a welcomed addition to the cast of Mortal Kombatand will likely be his biggest role to date when all is said and done. But, him and Taslim being the first two to join the movie is hopefully an indication that the film is prioritizing finding actual martial artists for these roles. If that is something Mortal Kombat is looking for with its entire cast, then it should allow the movie to do practical elaborate fight sequences with its lead actors. The fatalities and some of the powers won't be able to happen this way, but the actual hand-to-hand combat abilities of its stars could help Mortal Kombatstand apart in a crowd of action movies.

[h=1]Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot Casts Jax, Liu Kang, & Mileena[/h]

The cast of Mortal Kombat has grown a bit bigger now that the film has found its Liu Kang, Mileena, and Jax Briggs. Mortal Kombat made its way onto the market in 1992 as an arcade game, but since then there have been several console games as well as a few movies. Even though the 1995 Mortal Kombat and the 1997 Mortal Komat: Annihilation failed to hit the mark with fans and critics, New Line Cinema is now trying to reboot the series.
A Mortal Kombat reboot has been in development for years, but the film really started to make progress once James Wan signed on as a producer. Since then the film has gained Simon McQuoid as a director, gotten a 2021 release date, and started to cast some of the characters. It was reported in March that Joel Edgerton was being eyed for Kato, but that casting decision has yet to be officially confirmed. Joe Taslim was cast as Sub-Zero last month, but now the film has cast three more characters.

According to THR, Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl), Sisi Stringer, and Ludi Lin (Power Rangers) have all been cast in Mortal Kombat. Brooks is set to play Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs, while Stringer and Lin have been cast as Mileena and Liu Kang respectively. The report also claims that Tadanobu Asano (Thor: Ragnarok) is in talks to play Raiden, but he hasn't officially signed onto the project.

Fans have been waiting a long time for a new Mortal Kombat movie and even longer for one that is faithful to the games. Both of the previous Mortal Kombat movies from the '90s were PG-13, but McQuoid's Mortal Kombat will be rated R and include game-accurate fatalities. Not much is known along the lines of the story, but Mortal Kombat will film in Australia with pre-production believed to have started in May.

While there is still a lot unknown about Mortal Kombat, it is a good sign that the film has started casting some of its biggest characters. Jax Briggs, Mileena, and Liu Kang have all been apart of the Mortal Kombat franchise for a long time, with Kang even appearing in the first game back in 1992. The actors themselves will also likely be well-received since Brooks and Lin have already appeared in popular movies and TV shows, however, Mortal Kombat will be Stringer's acting debut. Getting Asano to play Raiden would also be a popular decision since he is well-known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That being said, fans will have to wait patiently to find out who else is cast and if Asano joins Mortal Kombat.

[h=1]Mortal Kombat Movie Casts Its Sonya Blade & Kano[/h]

The upcoming
Mortal Kombat reboot movie has found its Sonya Blade and Kano. This comes less than a month after the film officially cast its Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Mileena (Sisi Stringer) and Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) in lead roles. Mortal Kombat is set to release in 2021, and is a reboot of the 1995 film of the same name, which received mixed to negative reviews from critics but made a decent profit at the box office, leading to a much-maligned sequel in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. That film failed at the box office and was completely panned by critics and fans alike, but now studio New Line looks to give the franchise another shot.

Mortal Kombat will be based on the long-running and extremely popular video game series, which just recently released
Mortal Kombat 11, a game that waswell-received by fans and critics and kept the 17-year-old franchise running strong. The new movie will be produced by James Wan, who's responsible for some of the most successful horror films of the past decade, including The Conjuring series, as well as directing the billion-dollar-grossing Aquaman last year. It'll also be the first R-rated theatrical Mortal Kombat film, as those involved with the film hope to capture the brutal and gory fatality-centered combat of the games.

According to THR, the Mortal Kombat reboot has officially found its Sonya Blade and Kano, with The Meg's Jessica McNamee and House of Lies' Josh Lawson filling the roles. Also in talks for an unknown role is Lewis Tan, who recently starred in Netflix's Wu Assassins series. No other plot points of the upcoming movie were revealed.

Casting Sonya Blade and Kano is a big deal for the Mortal Kombat reboot, especially the former, who's one of the main protagonists of the video game series. Kano, on the other hand, is Blade's mortal enemy throughout them. Whether or not the upcoming film establishes that plot point between the two characters is unknown, but considering its importance to Blade's character development, it's likely Wan and director Simon McQuoid will touch on it. As for which character Tan could be portraying, that's a little more difficult to say, but a fun possibility is that producers are going to throw a curveball at fans and put him in the role of Johnny Cage. This is obviously not confirmed, however.

Either way, the Mortal Kombat reboot is really starting to fill out its main cast (and even popular side
characters like Sub-Zero) and is looking as promising as ever. Whether or not it can break a long-standing curse of video game movies underwhelming audiences and critics remains to be seen, but with Wan as producer, anything is possible.

[h=1]Mortal Kombat Reboot Perfectly Casts Shang Tsung & Scorpion[/h]

The upcoming Mortal Kombat movie reboot casts its Shang Tsung and Scorpion actors, and the choices should prove quite popular with franchise fans. For as much success and staying power as Mortal Kombat has shown in the video game realm - the occasional misstep notwithstanding - it's never really translated well to either the big or small screens. While the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie is fondly remembered by many, and features some good performances and action scenes, its PG-13 rating prevented it from truly capturing the blood-soaked spirit of the property.
Then there's 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which almost nobody would attempt to defend. Sporting a cast overhauled for the worse,Annihilation was a critical and commercial flop, and is today best known for producing incredibly cringe-worthy scenes such as Liu Kang's poorly rendered CGI dragon transformation. There was also a short-lived live-action series called Mortal Kombat: Conquest that failed to impress anyone, and an equally short-lived animated series subtitled Defenders of the Realm that also failed to make a splash.

With all that in mind, 2021's James Wan-produced Mortal Kombat reboot has a lot of high expectations riding on it, as fans hope to finally see a proper adaptation of the games they love. Writer Greg Russo has helped hype fans up by promising the inclusion of
game-accurate Fatalities, and that the film will likely be a hard-R when it comes to violent content. Recently, several casting announcements have been made, and now Variety reports that the movie has cast its versions of popular fighters Shang Tsung and Scorpion. Playing Shang Tsung will be Chin Han, while playing Scorpion will be Hiroyuki Sanada.

On the surface, both men appear to be cast quite well, especially Sanada, who's been a popular fan choice to play Scorpion for many months. Han's knack for playing well-spoken, smarmy jerks with a touch of class should also make him a great Shang Tsung. Chin Han of course played scheming banker Lau in The Dark Knight, and also played wealthy villain Frank Chen on Arrow, although he's since portrayed nobler characters in Independence Day: Resurgence and Skyscraper.
Sanada has a long history of playing martial artists, having appeared as such in projects like The Last Samurai, The Wolverine, 47 Ronin, and Rush Hour 3.Sanada more recently played the Yakuza boss killed by Hawkeye early inAvengers: Endgame. Sanada also counts among his long resume appearances in the films Sunshine, Life, and Ringu, and TV shows like Lost, Revenge, and The Last Ship. Previously cast Mortal Kombat fighters include Sonya Blade, Kano, Liu Kang, Jax, Mileena, and Scorpion's nemesis Sub-Zero, played by The Raid: Redemption's Joe Taslim. So far, Wan and director Simon McQuoid seem to be casting based on talent and appropriateness for the role above notoriety, as the cast is so far all comprised of up-and-comers or veteran supporting players.
