Sony Pictures is moving forward with a Morbius the Living Vampire movie as part of their Spider-Man spinoff universe. Sony has tried their hand at a standalone Spider-Man franchise twice over the last two decades – first with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, then again with Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man. However, when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn’t meet expectations, Sony struck a deal with Marvel to bring Peter Parker into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland debuted as the latest wall-crawling superhero in Captain America: Civil War, and found success in his own film this summer with Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming.
While the character of Peter Parker is now shared between Sony and Marvel, Sony still owns the rights to Spider-Man and the superhero’s stable of related characters. As such, the studio has begun building its own Spider-Man spinoff universe that so far includes Ruben Fleischer’s Venom, starring Tom Hardy, and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Silver and Black, which has yet to be cast but will focus on Silver Sable and Black Cat. Now, another Spider-Man spinoff is in the works to join the fledgling superhero franchise.

As reported by THR, Power Rangers scribes Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama wrote a script for a movie based on Morbius the Living Vampire that was secretly in development at Sony. As of yet, there’s no director or star on board the Morbius movie, but we know it won’t be connected to Tom Holland’s iteration of Spider-Man.

Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, Morbius first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #101 in 1971 – the first issue not written by Peter Parker co-creator Stan Lee. According to Marvel Comics lore, Michael Morbius was a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist who accidentally turned himself into a pseudo-vampire during an experimental treatment in which he was trying to cure a blood disease using electroshock therapy and vampire bats. The anti-hero has many of the same characteristics of a vampire, such as aversion to sunlight and the need to drink blood to survive, but isn’t affected by typical vampire weaknesses, like religious artifacts.

Sharpless and Sazama, for their part, have some experience in vampire mythology, having penned the script for what was meant to be the kickstarter for Universal’s Dark Universe, Dracula Untold – though the movie underperformed and was then ignored by the studio’s latest vision for the classic monster universe. Their additional writing credits include Gods of Egypt and The Last Witch Hunter, as well as the upcoming Netflix reboot of Lost in Space.
Details about Sharpless and Sazama’s Morbius movie script are unknown at this time, and whether or not the film will tell the character’s origin story is also unclear. Additionally, without a release date or any word on production, it remains to be seen what kind of timetable Sony is looking at for this film. As of now, Venom has an October 2018 release date, with Silver and Black set to hit in February 2019, so it’s likely the Morbius movie won’t debut before mid-to-late 2019. As such, we may learn more about Sony’s Morbius the Living Vampire film in the coming months, that is, if the studio decides to continue moving forward on it.

[h=1]Sony's Morbius The Living Vampire Spinoff Gets First Plot Details[/h]

The first plot details for Sony's Morbius, a Spider-Man spinoff, tease a "horror action story" with a fairly comic-book-accurate vibe.
Sony's Spider-villains spinoffs are yet to begin, launching later this year with Venom, but the studio seems confident that they can create a successful shared cinematic universe. In November of last year, we learned that one of the spinoffs being considered is Morbius: The Living Vampire. Things have been pretty quiet about the film for some time, with the latest news being that Antoine Fuqua was approached for the movie. While Fuqua didn't confirm anything, he sounded positive.

The wheels are evidently turning on Morbius, and That Hashtag Show has just revealed the first ever summary of the film. According to their insiders, this is the general direction:
"Horror action story of a scientist who, in trying to find a cure for a rare blood disease, accidentally transformed himself into a living vampire who, though disgusted by his own bloodlust, chooses to prey upon criminals he deems unworthy of life."

It's a fairly comic-book-accurate account of Morbius's origin story. Roy Thomas and Gil Kane created the character back in 1971, and imagined him as a tragic figure who had become a vampire through science rather than supernatural means. That's always made Morbius quite an interesting, complex antihero in the Marvel Comics; he essentially bridges the gulf between Marvel's scientific and mystical heroes. Morbius was initially imagined as a horror-style enemy for Spider-Man, but it didn't take long for him to star in his own adventures.
It's important to remember that the comic book industry of the 1970s was very different to the present day. Up until 1971, the Comics Code Authority had prohibited the use of vampires and other supernatural characters, viewing them as unwholesome entertainment. Morbius was Marvel's reaction to the lifting of this restriction, a smart attempt to blend the supernatural into the more scientific world of Marvel Comics. Vampires are no longer so unusual, and they're frankly commonplace when it comes to the big screen; it will take a good script to adapt the comic book concept into a successful blockbuster.
It's too soon to tell how Sony's Spider-Man spinoffs will perform in the box office. The first teaser trailer for Venom was heavily criticized, particularly as it didn't give even a glimpse of the tongue-slavering symbiote; the full trailer corrected that error, and captured a lot more interest. Meanwhile, production on Silver & Black - due to release in February of next year -has been delayed indefinitely, with director Gina Prince-Bythewood confirming they're still working on a script. Hopefully production will start off again soon.

[h=1]Jared Leto To Star In Sony's Morbius The Living Vampire Spider-Man Spinoff[/h]

Jared Leto is set to star in Sony's Morbius the Living Vampire. With so many comic book movies hitting theaters on a yearly basis, every studio is trying to create a universe of their own and find actors who can lead these hopeful franchises. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe still reigns supreme, it's received an extra shot of superpowers with Sony sharing Spider-Man. That deal doesn't bring everything under the MCU umbrella though, and Sony's adamant to pump out more Marvel-related projects. Venom kicks off their spinoff universe this year, but they've got much more planned.
One of the projects that has been the subject of discussion is a movie centered around Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who becomes a vampire after trying to cure his own disease. There hasn't been much news on the possible project, though, but now it is taking a major step forward.

THR reports Suicide Squad star Jared Leto is heading over to Marvel and will star in Morbius the Living Vampire. Not only will the Oscar-winner double up on superhero movie roles, but his latest project already has a director. Daniel Espinosa is going to direct the project, after previously helming Life for the studio.

[h=1]Sony's Morbius Movie Reportedly Won't Affect Jared Leto's Joker Role[/h]

Jared Leto starring in Morbius the Living Vampire won't change his position as the Joker in the DCEU. Since making a turn into the world of acting, Leto has built up an impressive résumé. Dramatic turns in Requiem for a Dream and Dallas Buyers Club proved his ability, but he made a splash a few years back by joining the DC Universe as the Joker. His portrayal was purposefully different from Heath Ledger's memorable turn but it still split viewers. Despite the differing opinions, Leto has remained part of Warner Bros.' plans for the future of the DC world.
Leto's been linked to starring in Suicide Squad 2 on multiple occasions and could even be a candidate for Birds of Prey. There's also been a Harley vs Joker movie discussed and most recently a standalone movie for Leto. Now, it looks like he'll get a standalone movie with a different comic book movie universe after signing on to star in Morbius the Living Vampirefor Sony. However, his status as the Joker isn't changing.

In Variety's coverage of Leto's new superhero role, they cleared up any confusion about his future as the Joker too. They've been told that Leto playing Morbius "does not affect" him playing the clown prince of crime. That is as far as the report goes, so those interested in seeing more of Leto as the Joker have nothing to worry about, even if he's joined a Marvel property.

Early indications on Morbius point to the film starting production sometime this year, which could take up the bulk of Leto's schedule. Even though he's still going to be WB's Joker, when exactly the project does begin filming could limit where he could possibly appear. As of right now, there's no DC movie productions happening for the rest of the year, unless Birds of Prey moves a bit faster than currently expected.
While Leto's Joker status may not be changed right now, it very well could depending on how both of these franchises progress. If Morbius is a success, Sony is surely going to want a sequel with Leto returning. This would be years away from right now, but between other acting projects and Leto's music career, there's only so much time he can spend in either universe. He may have been a polarizing part of Suicide Squad, but Leto is still a rather big name. Plus, if Morbius does wind up being a hit, then it could further incentivize WB to push Leto's Joker movie forward to capitalize. Whatever the case may be, it looks like audiences may need to get used to seeing Leto in both roles.

[h=1]Sony's Morbius Movie: Female Lead Is Reportedly Martine Bancroft[/h]

The female lead of Sony's Morbius movie will reportedly be a character named Martine Bancroft. Morbius's fiancee in the comics, Bancroft was a major secondary character in the Adventures Into Fear comic book series - and ultimately became a vampire herself.
Sony's Spider-villain franchise will launch in October with Venom, but the studio is wasting no time in pushing ahead with the next film. The latest reports suggest that Morbius, which stars Jared Leto, will begin production in November. That leaves Sony precious little time to adjust their plans based on popular and critical responses to Venom. It certainly means that viewers are currently seeing a drip-by-drip release of news about Morbius.

The latest news is apparently confirmation of Morbius's female lead. According to
That Hashtag Show, this will be Martine Bancroft, Morbius's fiancée in the comics. Bancroft was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane back in 1971, making her debut in Amazing Spider-Man #102. A flashback sequence revealed Morbius's history, as he struggled to find a cure for a rare blood disorder. Morbius kept the truth about his condition secret from Martine, and didn't even reveal his experiments to her. Needless to say, Martine got something of a shock when Morbius turned himself into a vampire, and she stumbled upon his first victim. Martine's story would take many twists and turns over the years, ultimately becoming a vampire too.

It makes sense for Martine Bancroft to appear in Morbius as the chief female lead. She's central to his origin story, adding a human dimension to the tragedy of Michael Morbius. Martine became a central character in the 1970s Adventures Into Fear series; her continued love for Michael gave the scientist a reason to try to turn himself human again. Unfortunately, Morbius's fiancée wound up involved with the so-called "Cult of the New Order." Brainwashed into serving as one of the cult's priestesses, she betrayed Morbius to them. That experience finally led Martine to realize her love for Michael was cooling, and the two went their separate ways.

But Martine found that her life was still bound to Morbius; in a surprising twist, she was herself transformed into a vampire. Although she's been killed and resurrected a number of times, the character is currently deceased. Morbius himself stabbed her with a stake when he realized she was dangerously out-of-control.
If these reports are correct, it will be interesting to see how Sony adapt Martine Bancroft. It's possible their plot will be adapted from the little-known Adventures Into Fear run, and that Bancroft will indeed come under the influence of the Cult of the New Order.

[h=1]Jared Leto's Morbius is Next Sony Marvel Movie, Confirms Producer[/h]

Venom producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad have confirmed that Sony is currently working on the Morbius film. This is intended to be the next Spider-Man spinoff to release after Venom.
The upcoming Venom movie is intended to be the launch of a new superhero shared universe centered around Spider-Man villains. The film is expected to lay a strong foundation for the rest of the franchise, with current predictions suggesting it will break Gravity's October box office record. The next film, Morbius, is gradually taking shape; there have been a number of recent rumors about key characters, and the latest reports have suggested that production will begin in November.

Speaking to ComicBook as part of a press tour ahead of Venom's release, Tolmach and Arad confirmed that production on Morbius will begin soon. "We’re obviously working on Morbius now. That’s sort of next up for us."

Morbius will star Jared Leto as the titular antihero, and the producers stressed that they're particularly excited to see his portrayal. Tolmach said that he expects "awesomeness" from Leto, who's well-known among superhero fans for his method acting in Suicide Squad. It seems that Leto absolutely loves the character of Morbius, a healer who is transformed into a monster. According to Tolmach, the movie should give Leto an opportunity to demonstrate "a similar level of intensity and charisma and devotion to the character."

Leto's schedule is certainly going to be a busy one, given the Joker is expected to be a major figure in the future of the DC movie universe. Fortunately for Sony, Warner Bros. is filming Birds of Prey ahead of Suicide Squad 2, and it doesn't look as though the Joker will figure in that movie at all. A leaked synopsis for Birds of Prey has suggested that Harley Quinn has broken up with the Joker and headed to Gotham.
It looks as though Morbius will be pretty much comic-book-accurate. The female lead is reportedly Martine Bancroft, Morbius's fiancée in the comics. Presuming this turns into a new franchise in its own rights, Bancroft could well prove to be a major figure down the line; she was brainwashed into joining a vampiric cult and betrayed Morbius to them. The villain of the film appears to be Emil Nikos, who was Morbius's best friend - and first victim - in the comics. Although Leto is confirmed as the star, no further casting details have yet been announced. Presumably it won't be long until details begin to emerge, though, if the production really is due to begin filming in November.

[h=1]Jared Leto's Morbius Movie Villain Reportedly Revealed[/h]

Jared Leto’s movie adaptation of Morbius the Living Vampire has potentially found its main villain. When Sony made clear its plans to bring Spider-Man villains and anti-heroes to screen without the superhero quipster’s involvement, many fans were rightfully concerned. Despite this, the studio’s first entry in this new anti-hero universe, Venom, has proven to be wildly successful (the film is expected to evenoutgross Justice League and Logan at the box office) with fans, even if critics haven’t exactly been kind to it.
This good piece of news for Sony has only emboldened the studio to further push forth with their universe of Spider-Man’s previous baddies in stand-alone film form. Next up is, of course, the Morbius the Living Vampire adaptation starring Jared Leto. The film is expected to start filming in early 2019 but, other than Leto’s casting, not too much has been revealed about the film’s plot or antagonist. Thanks to some new information, however, the latter may have finally been revealed.

Per That Hashtag Show, Morbius’ villain will be the character’s best friend by the name of Loxias Crown. While this character has not appeared in the comics and appears to be a brand new creation for the film adaptation, That Hashtag Showspeculates the character is based on another comic supervillain called Crown who eventually started calling himself Hunger.

This would certainly make sense, as Hunger is another villain who’s tangled with both Spider-Man and Morbius in the comics (Sony also reportedly has rights to nearly a thousand Spider-Man-centric characters). In this upcoming film version, however, Hunger’s origin would be heavily altered (assuming the character is based on Crown) as Morbius’ best friend who is afflicted with the same blood disease as him. According to the report, Crown and Leto’s Morbius will both take the same “cure” that transforms them into vampire-like creatures and the latter will be forced to stop his friend while dealing with unquenchable hunger for human blood.

If this is the case, Morbius will follow a similar story pattern as Venom (as well as countless other superhero origin films), having the character face off against a similar foe while slowly coming to terms with their own abilities and anti-hero nature. With how successful Venom has been, it would absolutely add up that Sony wants to keep that type of story rolling. What’s not clear, however, is how Morbius and Venom will eventually tie in together (if they do at all), which would really give this new shared universe a similar feel to both the DCU and MCU.
It’s also unclear if Sony will ever allow these characters to tie into the MCU Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films (Venom director Ruben Fleischer believes a Venom-Spider-Man face-off is only a matter of time). For now, however, Sony’s anti-hero led universe has shown no signs of slowing down and the studio may be hesitant to give Disney too much say or power in its world. Fans will simply have to wait and see howMorbius turns out for any indication as to the long-term future of this risky (but so far successful) endeavor.

[h=1]Morbius Confirmed for July 2020 Release[/h]

Jared Leto's solo
Morbius movie officially receives a July 2020 release date. Sony is in the midst of a great stretch of success thanks to their Marvel films. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a major awards winner and guaranteed more animated Spidey adventures in the future, but it was the surprise box office success of Tom Hardy's Venom that gave the studio confidence in their plans for spinoff films for several Spider-Man related characters. One of these is Morbius, which will star Jared Leto as the doctor-turned-vampire.

Sony has moved the film through development rather quickly ever since
Leto joined the project last summer. Daniel Espinosa was hired to direct the movie and production continued to move forward with hopes of filming beginning this year. That is very much the plan now as Morbius continues to add cast members, including recent addition Matt Smith. The film was already on track for a release some time next year, and now Sony has confirmed that is exactly what will happen.

THR's Aaron Couch shared the news that Sony has given Morbius a July 31, 2020 release date. The studio previously staked out this date for an untitled Marvel movie and it was believed at that time to be for Leto's solo film. There are currently no other films scheduled to open this weekend, giving Morbius an early chance to have success at the end of the summer season next year.

Although Morbius is currently set to be the biggest opener the weekend it comes out, it does have stiff competition to follow. Warner Bros. just announced Christopher Nolan's next movie will arrive two weeks ahead of Morbius' debut, and the Leto-led superhero film will have to directly follow the opening weekend of Disney's Jungle Cruise, which boasts Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt among its stars. While some may wonder why Sony doesn't just stick Morbius in the same slot where Venom succeeded, that is likely because Venom 2 is all but confirmed to hit theaters next October as well.

With
filming set to begin very soon, it should be reassuring to fans anticipating this project to already know when it will hit theaters. Outside of Leto in the lead role and Matt Smith presumably playing the villain, Morbius has also added Adria Arjona as the main love interest Martine Bancroft. The next few months should be filled with additional updates on the project as filming continues through May. Since Morbius' look shouldn't require much of any CGI enhancement, it is very possible that Sony could treat fans with a first look at Leto's vampire form for Morbius in the near future.
