very much divided between
Sony 6400 , Fujifilm X T3, X T30. and the new Fujifilm X T4. Have somwhat narrowed down to these
|

Budget is not really fixed that much. The use is mostly stills street and potraits, and for a bit for street video or youtube.

Fujifilm X T4 is clearly a much better camera, but is it TWICE as much a camera as Sony 6400 ?

Are there any others in the same range ?

From the sound of it, this is your first mirrorless. Buy any one of them and forget the rest. People with budget Canon DSLRs have made award winning photos/film - any one of these should be more than enough. Don't worry too much about sharpness and ISO performance - they really don't matter outside of reviews.

Budget at least 50% of your total for lens(es). For photography lenses will matter much more than the body - I'd say lenses are 80% important and body 20%.

Note: Fuji has a specialty camera especially for street and casual photography. The X100 series. Look it up. I own an X100T and I'll trade my DSLR for it any day of the week.

No, I had a Sony NEX 5, but at the moment they didnt compete with DSLR, so decided to switch back ( I have owned maybe 3 Nikon / 2 Canon DSLR bodies over past ~ 15 years or so)..but now Mirrorless are dominating so was looking into getting into it.

the thing with Fujifilm Xt-3 is superior color science and 10 bit video ....I owned Sony 6400 for a week to test it....I liked it, but I didnt LOVE the handling of the camera, through the pictures quality was nice. So If I do decide to go for 6400 again, I would need a battery grip ( which is fine since the battery life wanst amazing on it)

my dream mirrorless camera currenlty would be Fujifilm X-T4 ...its almost perfect..but its 2000 Euros!!

I don't know about your future budgets but fujifilm lenses cost arm and leg, chose a system which has better quality plus affordable easy to available lenses and accessories

Cameras you have shortlisted are crop and 4/3 chose Full Frame for better quality and low light performance either DSLR or Mirror less from Sony or Nikon

Which lenses did you use with a6400 when you had it? (please don't say kit lens :p)

In my opinion if staying within your budget is important then get the a6400 with Sigma prime lenses (although that would mean no handheld video). But if you are leaning towards XT4 despite its cost, then go for A7 III instead.
a6600 can be an option as well but only if the price difference with a6400 isn't too much. a6600 would resolve your battery grip size and capacity issue you had with a6400, plus it would allow shooting handheld videos with Sigma primes.

I used it with the kit lens for a week..and as I said, I did like it..
hmm I keep switching between 6400 plus cage + extra battery + a couple of decent glass that sigma art f1.4 16mm/30mm and something like sony 18-105 f4
6600..which is essentially a 6400 with bigger battery + one of those lens
or xt4 but is A7 III that good ? I know its full frame but better than xt4 overall ?

If you liked results from the kit lens, you'll be amazed by the results you'll get from Sigma 1.4 lenses on a6400 :)

In my opinion, it is.

In addition to having the advantages (better DOF in both photos and videos, better low light performance, wider) and disadvantages (larger and more expensive lenses) of being full frame, it's also a better future investment in my opinion. By that I don't mean that the camera body is more future proof compared to XT4. Camera body is only one part of the equation and these become obsolete quickly. The other, more important part is the lenses, which don't age as fast as camera bodies and can last you decades. Whichever camera you end up buying, you'll most likely end up with 3 or more lenses for your camera. Some of those lenses may even be as expensive as the camera body itself.

With XT-4 you'll be stuck with APSC Fuji cameras introduced in future. You may feel the need or desire to go full frame but that would mean changing your whole gear and start fresh again.
Full frame e-mount has a larger and more versatile collection of lenses with new lenses being introduced regularly for it compared to any other mirrorless system currently. Better to invest in a camera system that allows you to grow.

In case of Fuji if you are dissatisfied with any features of the camera or want some improvement then you won't have any choice but to wait for XT-5 or XT-6 and prey that Fuji improves those cameras in the areas you want. In case of Sony, if and when you decide to upgrade from A7 III, other than the next cameras in the same line (A7 IV), you'll be able to choose if you want camera with higher resolution (A7R series), better sports photography capabilities (A9 series) or better video capabilities (A7S series "hopefully").

So, in my opinion if you want something on a budget (that is still absolutely great), get Sony a6400. But if you are willing to spend $1700 on the camera body alone, go for Sony A7 III. As far as I'm concerned, that price point is not suitable for APSC cameras, no matter how good they are.

That's an excellent combo :). Sigma 16mm and 56mm are better lenses than 30mm, but they are more expensive and are on either end in terms of focal lengths. 30mm, despite not being as good as the other two, is probably the better choice for an all purpose walk around lens.
