Sony Expects Microsoft to Keep Activision Games Multiplatform

Sony Group said it expected Microsoft Corp. to ensure that games from Activision Blizzard Inc. are available on non-Microsoft videogame platforms after its proposed acquisition of Activision.

"We expect that Microsoft will abide by contractual agreements and continue to ensure Activision games are multiplatform," a Sony spokesman said Thursday.

Activision supplies some of the most popular games for Sony's PlayStation game console, including the Call of Duty series. After Microsoft on Tuesday announced its acquisition plan, some analysts raised the possibility that Activision games might be available exclusively for Microsoft's own Xbox console and its subscription videogame services in the future.

This is the Bethesda acquisition all over again. Any games that were already signed on for all platforms will still get released, but once the prior commitments are done MS has no reason to put them out on any other platform ala Starfield or TES VI.

But games like Warzone will still continue to get support and updates on all platforms it's already out on for years, until Warzone 2 releases.

Everybody hung up on typical console warring fail to realize that it has always been about Game Pass and continuous supply of content on it. The more IPs under MS's control, they can better ensure Game Pass will always be getting new content. If Sony is willing, MS wouldn't even think twice about putting Game Pass on PS5. If it was all only about selling Xbox consoles, there wouldn't be PC Game Pass or xCloud for mobiles/tablets and later, directly on TV.

Phil Spencer and MS don't even see Sony as competition anymore. It's not like MS was worried that Sony would acquire Bethesda or Activision/Blizzard (like they have the money to do that lol). Rather have Microsoft acquire the biggest publishers than Amazon, Netflix or Google.

Had they continued doing what they were doing and extended focus on multiplayer projects, they wouldn't have been so dependent on GTA, Call of Dooooty, FIFA, and NBA for PS Plus revenue. Nevertheless, they seem to have realized some of their errors, and now have multiplayer games in development via multiple studios. Better late than never, I guess
