Details!

HBO and Guillermo del Toro are teaming on Monster, developing a potential series culled from a series of 18 volumes of Japanese Manga by author Naoki Urasawa published by Shogakukan Inc. Del Toro will co-write the story with Steven Thompson, best known for his work on Dr. Who and Sherlock. Thompson will write the pilot, which del Toro intends to direct.
FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW HOW EPIC THIS IS:

The thriller is about the search by a young doctor for the most evil sociopath that has ever lived. He is a 12-year old boy, and the doctor’s decision to save his life has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s Box that leaves the doc battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.
Spoiler: show
COMPLETE SYNOPSIS:

Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a renowned young brain surgeon of Japanese descent working in Europe. Highly lauded by his peers as one of the great young minds that will revolutionize the field, he is blessed with a beautiful fiancé and is on the cusp of a high promotion in the hospital he works at. However, all of that is about to change with one critical decision that Dr. Tenma faces one night—whether to save the life of a young child or that of the town's mayor. Despite being pressured by his superiors to perform surgery on the mayor, his morals force him to perform the surgery on the young child, saving his life and forfeiting the mayor's. All of a sudden, Dr. Tenma's world is turned upside down by his decision leading to the loss of everything he previously had. A doctor is taught to believe that all life is equal; however, when a series of murders occur in the vicinity of Dr. Tenma, all of the evidence pointing to the young child who he saved, Tenma's beliefs are shaken.

This is certainly a departure for HBO, entering the Manga game, but for del Toro and Thompson, it allows them an incredible sandbox to play in. Del Toro will be executive producer and Thompson co-executive producer, with Angry Films’ partners Don Murphy and Susan Montford executive producing with Exile’s Gary Ungar. Shogakukan will be consulting producer.

Guys, if they follow the original plot and setting, then this has potential for unimaginable epicness. They can change their race as far as I'm concerned, but they must keep the plot original and linear to the authentic work of Naoki Urasawa.

Oh WOW, MEGATON indeed!

True, HBO and Del Toro really need to make sure it's faithful to Urasawa's work. Some of the best aspects of the original were its deeper-than-usual characterization and attention to detail. They need to ensure that there are no compromises on that front.

This is great news, I'm glad they didn't just go for a film adaption. Hope not too much is changed or deviates to far from the manga/anime.

HOLY SHIT!!

News of The year! :bounce

But I agree with Ahmad, I want this thing to follow the Manga/Anime as much as possible, and since this is HBO I'm sure they won't tone it down much for the western audiences.I hope

How amazing would it be to see the Anime opening song play with Live action actors playing the characters? Do want. :D

PERFECT!

Now all we need are cast members that fit each role and Del Toro is indeed the perfect choice, i am sure that he can pull it off. Hopefully, they don't deviate too much from the manga plot.

If this is well directed and well acted, there is no doubt that it will end up with the legendary TV series of HBO.

This is some huge news. I hope they don't fuck it up. I still haven't read the manga but the anime is the best anime along with CG. Now I feel like watching the anime once more.

What are the characters like? Are there any prominent middle aged supporting characters? I so want Nikolaj Costar Waldau in this. And Jensen Ackles too, if only he wasn't shooting Supernatural in Canada.
