Contrary to earlier reports, Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts is not yet attached to direct Spider-Man 3 for Sony. After becoming Sony's highest-grossing movie of all-time, the future of the Spider-Man franchise appeared to be brighter than ever. It was believed that the third film would be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that is currently not the case.Marvel Studios is no longer set to be involved with future Spider-Man filmsfollowing talks over the deal being restructured falling apart.
This shocking piece of news has many different angles to it and is continuously evolving. When it was initially revealed, the reports stated that Disney wants to co-finance and split the profits of any future Spider-Man film that Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige were involved in. Sony reportedly balked at that proposal - later blamed Disney for the deal falling through - and reportedly are planning to make two more movies starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. At the time, it was also reported that Watts would direct both installments.

That news originally came from Deadline, but they have now updated their piece to clarify that Watts is not signed on to direct either of the upcoming sequels. They labeled his potential return as an "open question." The report notes one reason Watts may not return is that studios are heavily courting him for other jobs at the moment. Whether or not Watts does direct Spider-Man 3and 4, Holland is reportedly under contract for the two sequels.

If Watts does not return to direct Spider-Man 3, the reason such a decision is made could be telling. Sony could potentially look to find their guy to bring Spider-Man into their universe and may decide that Watts is not the right fit for such a move. But, he's also directed two critically adored films and is behind two of the most successful Spider-Man movies ever. That said, this could also be Watts deciding to walk away from the franchise if Marvel Studios isn't involved. He was hired to shepherd Spider-Man into the MCU after all, and if he can no longer access parts of the story he was building, then that could be reason enough for him to move on.

Even though Watts is not currently signed on to direct Spider-Man 3 (much less Spider-Man 4), this is still very early on. It wasn't long ago that the reports said he was directing these films, so something could easily change - maybe even with a
deal between Sony and Marvel still being worked out. Sony has yet to even announce when Spider-Man 3 is coming or that it has writers attached. Figuring out whether or not Watts will direct could take some time, especially if his decision rests on whether or not Sony and Disney/Marvel will find a compromise to extend the deal. But as of right now, the director's chair for Spider-Man 3 is wide open. And, if multiple studios are courting him for new projects, then there's no reason for Watts to sign on when the status of the franchise has so many questions.

[h=1]Spider-Man May Still Be Part Of Sony’s Villain Universe Despite Marvel Deal[/h]

Spider-Man is officially back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he may also crossover with Sony's villain universe at the same time. The future of Tom Holland's Peter Parker now appears to be back on track. After talks between Disney and Sony broke down over how Marvel Studios could stay involved with the Spider-Man franchise, it appeared as though Holland was heading straight for Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters.
The SUMC was launched with Venom last year and kicked off several other films being in development by Sony - but without the help of Marvel Studios. Now, the third film in the Spider-Man: Homecoming franchise is confirmed to take place in the MCU with a 2021 release date set. Spidey's involvement with the MCU won't stop there though, as he will also appear in another MCU film. This may initially appear to spell doom for the chances of Spider-Man appearing in any of Sony's other Marvel films, but that may not be the case.

As part of the press release issued by Sony and Disney to make this announcement, comments from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal were included. One part of Feige's comments on the deal tease that even though Spider-Man is now back with the MCU, he could crossover between both Marvel and Sony's shared universes. Here's what he said:
He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.

Feige's quote is a bit buried in the press release, but it is potentially the most significant aspect of this new deal between Disney and Sony. They haven't shared specifics of what this will mean, but it suggests that Spider-Man's future could include him jumping back and forth between the MCU and SUMC, which are two distinctly different universes. That said, Sony's Marvel films will now become MCU-adjacent projects, as they called them long ago, without forcing them to be part of the MCU's actual canon.
All of this essentially gives the MCU, Sony, and Holland the best-case scenario. With their own ambitious slate of movies and Disney+ TV shows, Marvel Studios and Feige can concentrate on crafting a narrative around actual MCU films without worrying about Venom 2 or a Madame Webmovie. Instead, Sony will be able to do as they please with those properties and bring Holland's Spider-Man into the mix when they see fit. This deal will allow Holland to continue playing Spider-Man in the MCU (which he loves), but also give him the opportunity to team-up with Tom Hardy's Venom (which he has long wanted to do). Simply put, the main part of Spider-Man's story may stay in the MCU, but he can now go on one-off, side-adventures within Sony's upcoming Marvel films with the potential to link them all together one day.

MCU's Spider-Man 3 Reportedly Bringing Back Andrew Garfield For Spider-Verse

Andrew Garfield will reportedly return as Spider-Man for Marvel Studios and Sony's Spider-Man 3, reprising his role from the Amazing Spider-Man films.

Andrew Garfield will reportedly return as Spider-Man for Marvel Studios and Sony's Spider-Man 3, reprising his role from the Amazing Spider-Man films. Garfield's tenure as Spidey ended when Sony decided to conclude his franchise after The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That paved the way for Tom Holland to be introduced as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Holland made his MCU debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War and has since appeared in two Avengers films in addition to his two solo features, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Last summer, Marvel and Sony struck a deal for Holland's Spider-Man to return in another solo film and team-up. The as-yet-untitled Spider-Man 3 is currently filming and details about the film's cast indicate it will play with the multiverse. Previously, it was reported that Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Doctor Strange, a master of the mystic arts whose next film includes "multiverse" in the title (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). Further, Jamie Foxx is returning as Electro, the villain from Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Today it was reported that Alfred Molina will return as Doctor Octopus after playing the villain in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. Now, even more new info is revealed as two past Spider-Man actors are reportedly returning to share the screen with Holland's web-slinger.

As part of Collider's report on Molina's return, the publication indicated Garfield will return for the MCU's Spider-Man 3. Also, Collider's Jeff Sneider reports that he expects Emma Stone to return as Gwen Stacy from The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, but does not indicate whether talks have happened or a deal has been struck. Further, Sneider reports that Tobey Maguire is in talks to return for Spider-Man 3, with Kirsten Dunst purportedly already set to come back as Mary Jane Watson.

Previously, Sony denied reports that Garfield and Maguire would return for Spider-Man 3. However, with the inclusion of villains from their franchises, it makes sense for Holland's Peter Parker to run across the superheroes who battled Molina's Doc Ock and Foxx's Electro. But it's unclear as of yet how big Garfield or Maguire's roles are in Spider-Man 3. It's possible Holland - and perhaps Doctor Strange - jumps from one universe to another, running into Garfield, Stone's Gwen and Foxx's Electro in one, and Maguire, Dunst's MJ and Molina's Doc Ock in another. Or there could be some kind of team-up of the three Spider-Man actors, along the lines of Sony's 2018 animated feature Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse.

Although the prospect of seeing Holland, Garfield and Maguire's Spider-Man characters unite on screen - and Stone's character potentially become Spider-Gwen - is exciting, it's not yet known how exactly it'll play out. After past superhero movies - including Spider-Man movies in Sony's past franchises - have suffered from being overstuffed, some may be concerned by the sheer number of characters reported to appear in Spider-Man 3. Marvel Studios has demonstrated an ability to be able to balance incorporating many characters in a film, as seen with their team-ups, but even the MCU has had its criticisms in that regard. For now, it remains to be seen how it all comes together and how Garfield and Stone's Amazing Spider-Man characters may fit into the MCU's Spider-Man 3.

Spider-Man 3 Brings Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus Back From Raimi Movies

Alfred Molina to return as Doctor Octopus for Spider-Man 3, reprising his role from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films for the Marvel Studios & Sony movie.

Alfred Molina to return as Doctor Octopus for Spider-Man 3, reprising his role from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man franchise for the Marvel Studios & Sony movie. After two solo movies and joining two Avengers films, Tom Holland's Peter Parker next suits up in the as-yet-untitled Spider-Man 3 set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though it's not set to hit theaters until late 2021, Spider-Man 3 is currently filming and, as a result, information about the movie's cast has been revealed in recent weeks.

In addition to Holland and the supporting cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man 3 has seen the casting of other MCU heroes, as well as villains from past Spider-Man franchises. Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his MCU role as Doctor Strange, serving as Peter's next superhero mentor after Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man and Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. Plus, Jamie Foxx is returning as Electro from Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. And now Marvel and Sony have set a villain from Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy to return as well.

THR is reporting that Molina will reprise his role as Dr. Otto Octavius aka Doctor Octopus from Raimi's Spider-Man 2 in Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man 3. The news was initially reported by The GWW last month. The GWW's report further indicated Molina would be fully outfitted with Doc Ock's metal tentacles, and had begun filming action scenes while on set last month. Neither Marvel nor Sony confirmed the report.

With the additions of Foxx's Electro and now Molina's Doc Ock, it does appear that Marvel and Sony are uniting all three live-action Spider-Man franchises. Sony, of course, paved the way for this by introducing the multiverse in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. That film's post-credits scene confirmed Venom took place elsewhere in its multiverse. Since Sony still retains the film rights to Spider-Man, with the studio having made a deal with Disney/Marvel for Peter Parker to appear in the MCU, it makes sense that their film series could overlap and sets their Spider-Verse franchise up for many exciting movies in the future.

Still, with Spider-Man 3 now including not one, but two villains from past Spider-Man film franchises, there's a concern about overstuffing the story. Both Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were criticized for including too many villains and thus stretching the story too thin for a two-hour film. Since Marvel Studios took over the creative direction of live-action Spidey with his incorporation in the MCU, they've produced two very well received Spider-Man films. So it's entirely possible that Marvel and Sony can create an exciting and compelling multiverse movie in Spider-Man 3. But whether they can actually deliver a movie that explains the multiverse, introduces MCU Peter Parker to other universes and tells a solid standalone story remains to be seen. More information about how Molina's Doctor Octopus fits into Spider-Man 3 - especially since the character dies at the end of Raimi's Spider-Man 2 - and whether his character gets a redesign will be revealed in the months ahead.
