Maximum power consumption option

I was facing a stuttering issue while playing darksouls... it would play smoothly at like 60 fps but it would like frequently stutter for a 2 - 4 seconds which was kinda annoying.. so I turned on the "maximum power consumption" option on my Gforce 580 for the game and it 95% solved the problem....
But I am kinda worried....does playing the game on this setting put my card at risk? Should I not do this? Is it safe to do this for extended play throughs like for 3 - 4 hours?

If you have a quality PSU, then you shouldn't be worried. Paper specs says 600 or better with 42 amp PSU.
At gaming load, max power draw of GTX 580 is around 300W, while 450W including full system (high end system).

Make sure you've a good Power supply.
