One of the biggest sci-fi hits of all-time kicked off in 1999 when Warner Bros. brought Keanu Reeves into a leading role in The Matrix. The Wachowskis’ visual style breathed new life into the genre, right at the time when computers and the internet began to explode. While the first franchise entry stands as one of the best movies in the genre, the series came to disappointing and confusing end with the two subsequent sequels.
Still, the disdain for the sequels has not deterred love of the original in the slightest over the years, and there has long been an interest to see more from the Matrix world. Well, it appears Warner Bros. is interested in exploring the Matrix again and has a leading man in mind already.
THR is reporting that WB is in the early stages of development on a reboot of The Matrix. They are currently courting Zak Penn to write a treatment, with his previous work including The Avengers, X-Men, and Ready Player One. As for their star, they are reportedly already eyeing Michael B. Jordan to take on the lead role this time around. However, one movie is not enough for them, with WB hoping The Matrix reboot can become its own universe and spawn multiple sequels and spinoffs.

This is not the first time rumors of a Matrix reboot have surfaced. Nearly three years ago, rumors pointed to the Wachowskis handing in early treatments to WB that would launch a new trilogy in the universe. However, today’s report says that the former directing duo are not, as of this time, involved with the project, but that could always change as it develops.
If WB is truly looking at this as a reboot, it would make sense to abandon the creative team behind the original franchise and start new. Should this project materialize, being able to land Jordan in the lead would be quite the get for the studio. He is one of the rising stars in Hollywood recently after Creed crushed in 2015, and could break out even further with a villain role in Black Panther. He not only has the acting chops to make the out-of-this-world concept believable, but also the action background necessary to try to replicate, if not top, the fights from the original.

That all said, The Matrix reboot is in the early stages and appears to be a very fluid development process. Things could certainly change and evolve over time, but WB’s thought process of expanding the franchise could be interesting and point to some connectivity between the original film(s) and the new ones. After all, Reeves just recently said that he would be open to a return as Neo, but not under these reported circumstances. Either way, this is certainly an interesting development for the franchise and something to pay attention to moving forward.

Stay tuned to Screen Rant for further updates on The Matrix reboot as it progresses.

[h=1]The Matrix May Get A Writers Room To Relaunch The Franchise[/h]

In a time where studios have found great success in reviving pre-existing properties for a new audience, it was only a matter of time before The Matrix became next in line. Just yesterday, it was reported Warner Bros. was developing a reboot of the iconic sci-fi franchise, with Creed star Michael B. Jordan eyed to star. Fans of the groundbreaking original from the Wachowskis didn’t take too kindly to this announcement, but seeing that the Matrix trilogy grossed $1.8 billion collectively, the business motivations for such a move are understandable.
Currently, WB has Zak Penn (The Avengers) working on a script treatment, but the studio has larger plans than just a single film. As is the case with most tentpole series, they’re hoping to launch another shared universe for the big screen – complete with multiple sequels and spinoffs. If that’s the case, then some more creative minds are going to have to come together, and now WB is putting the pieces in place for a Matrix brain trust.

According to Deadline, there’s a strong possibility WB assembles a writers room to figure out the best course of action moving forward. This practice has become prevalent in Hollywood over the years, as evidenced by the Lucasfilm story group (which oversees all aspects of the Star Wars canon) and Paramount’s Transformers team that’s working hard on projects for the robots in disguise (such as the Bumblebee standalone). It’s worth pointing out this is all in the “exploratory phase” and is not official just yet.

It isn’t surprising that this is an option WB is considering. With so many blockbuster films hitting theaters, it’s pertinent to find ways to stand out from the crowd and go big. Even Marvel is starting to move away from strictly “solo” superhero movies by giving each one some sort of crossover element (Hulk and Thor in Ragnarok). There’s still a place for these so-called smaller works, but launching a larger franchise in the Matrix universe sounds better on-paper than simply doing a remake of the first movie. If fans were promised a further examination of the series mythos in different films, some might become intrigued. After all, The Matrix Reloaded revealed Neo was not the first “One,” so there’s potential for prequels that depict the earliest days of the Matrix. Plus, with technology more advanced than ever, there could be some interesting opportunities for commentary there.
At the same time, one does have to wonder if WB would be better off leaving this alone and instead focus on their burgeoning DCEU and MonsterVerse franchises. While the Matrix sequels proved to be divisive, the first film is hailed as one of the greatest sci-fi works of all-time thanks to its original story and mind-bending visual effects. It’s difficult to see how a reboot could measure up to something so influential on the film medium, even with a talented actor like Jordan in the lead. Of course, there have been some reboots that pleasantly surprised audiences, so perhaps The Matrix can one day join those ranks.
We’ll keep you updated on The Matrix reboot as more information becomes available.

Why Rebooting The Matrix is a Bad Idea

When news broke that Warner Bros. is planning to reboot The Matrix, millions of movie fans went “Whoa!” According to reports, the studio is in the early, exploratory phase of development in relaunching the once-groundbreaking sci-fi franchise created by the Wachowskis. The only name attached to the project thus far is Michael B. Jordan (Creed), who is eyed to star in the reboot. For fans of The Matrix, a reboot could be cause for excitement. But we suspect for a great many more of those fans, especially those who were enraptured by the original Matrix in 1999 and were subsequently disappointed by its two sequels that concluded the trilogy in 2003, their reaction is more akin to: “Why?”

It’s difficult to not greet the news of a potential return of The Matrix with cynicism. Though very little is known about the project currently, the names not mentioned as being involved in the reboot is already cause for skepticism. Thus far, it seems like neither Keanu Reeves, Lawrence Fishburne, Carrie-Ann Moss, nor the Wachowskis themselves are part of this new Matrix project. (Keanu did state last month he’d be open to return to The Matrix if the Wachowskis were involved.) No release date has been announced, but that’s a positive in that at least the studio isn’t already locking this nascent project to be in theaters at a specific date. However, by announcing it now, it would stand to reason that perhaps Warners has an eye on the rebooted Matrix potentially in theaters by 2019, 20 years after the release of the original.

Warner Bros.’ desire to reboot The Matrix comes as no real surprise in our current Hollywood era of studios looking to capitalize on every existing IP with name-brand recognition. Star Wars is back in a huge way, Star Trek returned to movie screens as action-packed blockbusters, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe each have a decade of films planned for their vast roster of superheroes, King Kong and Godzilla are headlining a MonsterVerse, Ridley Scott is continuing his Alien franchise, Predator is being rebooted, Terminator tries and tries again, the list goes on. It was only a matter of time before Warner Bros. decided to breathe new life into the dormant Matrix property.

In such a crowded marketplace overstuffed with reboots and re-imaginings of ideas, stories, and characters we’ve seen before, do we really need The Matrix added to it? Was there even any real demand from audiences for The Matrix? Now, it’s true that many rebooted movie properties have actually turned out to be successful both critically and commercially. Audiences have flocked to the new Star Wars movies, for instance, and Kong: Skull Island did big business its opening weekend and impressed moviegoers. Audiences have lavished praise upon many rebooted Hollywood franchises while speaking even more loudly with the dollars in their wallets. Why should The Matrix be any different? Perhaps it wouldn’t. And yet, a reboot of The Matrix still seems like a bad idea.

[h=1]The Matrix ‘Reboot’ Isn’t a Reboot, Says Writer[/h]

Reports this week that The Matrix – filmmakers Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s touchstone 1999 sci-fi action/thriller starring Keanu Reeves as The One himself, Neo – is getting a reboot, have prompted much in the way of discussion. While some fans of the Wachowskis’ original feature have vocalized their interest in seeing The Matrix rebooted for the 21st century, other fans have argued that The Matrix shouldn’t be revised at all. However, throughout the debate so far, there has been a question that has yet to be fully addressed: exactly how is this new Matrix installment going to reboot and/or relaunch the larger franchise, in the first place?
The report that set this entire discussion off – one asserting that Warner Bros. Pictures is considering a Matrix reboot starring Michael B. Jordan (of Creed fame) – specifically referred to the project as being a “reboot”, though it did not elaborate upon that. Screenwriter Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers), who is the sole writer working on said Matrix revival right now, has now shed a bit more light on that very subject.
Penn has posted a series of tweets to his verified Twitter account, suggesting that The Matrix film he is developing is more of a continuation or expansion of the Matrix franchise, rather than a strict reboot/remake of the Wachowskis’ original 1999 film. We have strung together his most relevant tweets verbatim in paragraph form, below:

All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT the Matrix. People who know Animatrix and the comics understand. Can’t comment yet except to say that the words “reboot” and “remake” were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news… How about just re-release the matrix? Don’t reboot it, you can’t do better. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories. Look at what people are doing with Xmen universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.

The X-Men franchise is arguably going strong than ever now, what with Tim Miller’s raunchy action/comedy Deadpool, James Mangold’s grisly drama Logan and Noah Hawley’s trippy TV show Legion having all earned much in the way of critical acclaim. Perhaps just as importantly, each of these projects have put a refreshingly different twist on the general X-Men property too, so Penn drawing comparisons to that franchise and what is being planned for The Matrix, is encouraging in that respect.
Penn’s X-Men comparison, in combination with his other tweets, also suggests that his Matrix project isn’t going to discontinue the continuity of previous installments in the franchise (including, the short films that make up The Animatrix) but turn it into a shared universe, as the recent X-Men movies and TV shows alike have done. This also gels with reports that WB is considering assembling a Matrix writers group, in order to figure out the best approach to expanding the franchise from here.
Things are clearly fluid on The Matrix front right now, which accounts for Penn being hesitant to elaborate too much on exactly what said current plan is for this franchise. Still, the screenwriter’s words should provide comfort for those fans who aren’t keen on the idea of a film that simply recasts characters such as Neo, Morpheus and Trinity (made iconic by Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss, respectively), from the Wachowski sisters’ original landmark movie.

[h=1]New Matrix Movie Rumored to Follow Young Morpheus[/h]

Visionary filmmakers Lana and Lilly Wachowski broke out into Hollywood with their 1999 sci-fi action film, The Matrix, starring Keanu Reeves as Neo, a man who learns that humankind is imprisoned by sentient machines in a simulated reality called the Matrix. The original film was beloved by critics and fans alike, lauded for its groundbreaking action sequences and complex sci-fi world – not to mention it was a box office success, earning $460 million on a $63 million budget. The Matrix was followed by two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, which were less well received than the original and wrapped up the trilogy in 2003.
This week, it was reported Warner Bros is developing a reboot of The Matrix, with Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Creed) eyed to star. Since then, the new film’s writer, Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers) claimed the Matrix “reboot” isn’t a reboot at all, explaining, “no one could or should REBOOT the Matrix.” He went on to express interest in more stories within the Matrix world that aren’t remakes or reboots, and a new rumor may indicate that’s exactly what Warner Bros is exploring.

Birth Movies Death is reporting one Matrix franchise idea “that’s gained a lot of support” from Warner Bros is a prequel following the character of Morpheus, played by Laurence Fishburne in the original trilogy. According to their sources, the young Morpheus role is the part for which Jordan is being eyed. The report additionally confirms Warner Bros has plans of establishing a Matrix franchise writers room – which likely indicates the studio wants to launch a shared cinematic universe similar to Paramount’s Transformers series – and the Morpheus film is one of many ideas being explored.

In The Matrix trilogy, Morpheus was a mentor of sorts to Neo and an operative working against the machines in Zion. Before discovering Reeves’ character, Morpheus spent his life devoted to searching for The One from the Oracle’s prophecy that would free humankind from the machines and, as a result, the Matrix. If Warner Bros does end up developing the Morpheus prequel film, it could potentially follow this period in the character’s life – or his own discovery of the existence of the Matrix.
Of course, given the decidedly mixed response to word of a Matrix reboot, it remains to be seen whether the potential for a young Morpheus movie – or other films exploring the expanded universe of the Wachowskis’ sci-fi world – will be better received by fans. Plus, a prequel following a character as well liked as Morpheus is a smart move – one we’ve seen in both Paramount’s Bumblebee spinoff as well as Disney/Lucasfilm’s Han Solo project. Certainly, new stories that don’t retread the Wachowskis’ original films have a better chance of balancing The Matrix’s goodwill among fans with fresh ideas as a way of continuing the franchise.

[h=1]Matrix 4 Casts Yahya Abdul-Mateen II In Lead Role[/h]

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has joined the cast of Matrix 4 in an unknown lead role. The popular sci-fi franchise from the early 2000s is finally coming back in a major way. After talks of a Matrix reboot, Warner Bros. announced earlier this year that Lana Wachowski will return to write and direct a fourth installment of the franchise. In addition to her return, it was also confirmed that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity.
The confirmation of Matrix 4 came as quite the surprise and has left fans of the franchise with a lot of questions over how it will happen. For those who don't remember, both Neo and Trinity died at the end of Matrix Revolutions. Details on how they will return have yet to be revealed, but fans have also wondered if other familiar faces from the series could appear too. That isn't the case with the first piece of casting for Matrix 4 though.

According to Variety, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has landed a lead role in Matrix 4. The casting comes after Wachowski reportedly spent several days meeting with potential actors for the mystery role. Despite rumors that a younger version of Morpheus could be part of Matrix 4, it has yet to be confirmed that this is the role Abdul-Mateen will play. Variety's Justin Kroll clarified on Twitter that even if the role isn't young Morpheus, he could be connected to the character in some other way.

Even after just a few years of acting, Abdul-Mateen has quickly emerged as a rising star in Hollywood. He first impressed with his role in Netflix's The Get Down and recently did the same in an episode of Black Mirror. But, he's also been part of some fairly big projects already, with roles in The Greatest Showman, Aquaman, and Us. He will next be featured in season 1 of HBO's Watchmen series and has upcoming roles in the Jordan Peele-produced Candyman reboot and Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7.

With Matrix 4 added to his schedule, audiences will see a lot of Abdul-Mateen in the coming years. Production is slated to begin on the long-awaited sequel at the beginning of 2020, so the next few months should be full with additional
Matrix 4 details. But, this could also be the time when Abdul-Mateen's role is revealed. He would make for a stellar young Morpheus, but he could just as well be a brand new character. There's even the possibility that he could be a descendant or relative of Laurence Fishburne's iconic character. In any case, Abdul-Mateen is an exciting first addition to the cast of Matrix 4and hopefully an indication of who else will join the sequel.
