HBO and HBO Max content chief Casey Bloys reveals James Gunn's The Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker is set for a January 2022 release.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad spin-off series, Peacemaker, is targeting a January 2022 release date. The upcoming HBO Max series stars John Cena as the ruthless killer Peacemaker, one of the newest additions to the DC Extended Universe. Described as a "douchey Captain America" who will do anything to achieve peace - including kill - John Cena's Peacemaker will be a new member of Task Force X in Gunn's sequel-reboot of 2016's Suicide Squad. The show was first announced in September 2020, with Gunn attached as producing, writing every episode, and directing several episodes.

While Warner Bros keeps much of the show's plot under wraps, the series includes several characters from Gunn's Suicide Squad sequel/reboot, including Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee's John Economos. The eight-episode series will explore the titular character's origins. However, Gunn revealed the Peacemaker's timeline would not be made clear until after The Suicide Squad, currently set for release in both theaters and HBO Max on August 6. Further adding to the show's hype, Gunn also confirmed that various Suicide Squad characters would appear in the spin-off series. With the show already in production in Toronto and Vancouver and plans to finish up by June, the series now has a target release date.

THR reports HBO and HBO Max content chief Casey Bloys revealed the Peacemaker series is set for release in January 2022. Bloys explained that the spin-off series was one of the first DC TV shows he picked up. "I just started to get involved with the DC content in August," said Bloys. "Peacemaker is one of the first shows I greenlit and one of the first shows coming out in January 2022."

In addition to The Suicide Squad cast members, several other actors have been added to the first official DCEU TV show's cast. Orange Is the New Black's Danielle Brooks was announced to have joined the cast in November, alongside Robert Patrick and Chris Conrad. When They See Us' Chukwudi Iwuji was also announced as a series regular, along with Riverdale actor Lochlyn Munro, Shades of Blue's Annie Chang, and Togo's Christopher Heyerdahl in recurring guest roles. Most recently, Kroll Show star Nhut Le was cast as martial artist superhero Judomaster, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 actor Elizabeth Faith Ludlow plays a character named Keeya.

With the plot and other details about the highly-anticipated show are secret, it's clear Gunn has a lot in store for Peacemaker. Hopefully, the show will have better reactions than past DCEU projects, as Gunn seems to have a lot of creative freedom with the series, with the filmmaker even joking that the show would only be 40 seconds long if edited for television. Now that the series has a release date, fans can look forward to getting to know the anti-hero more after meeting him for the first time in The Suicide Squad.
