I currently have a G4560 7th generation Pentium processor. I am looking to move to i5 7500. I am able to source a 7500 (used) for around 26k from our local market. Is this a good price or I should keep on looking for a better seller ?. I don't plan to upgrade to Ryzen or Intel (newer generations) in the near future. Any advice would be appreciated

I am not an expert but the price seems too high for something that performs equal to a 4th gen core i5. Price for this processor should be around 10-15k. Look for a compatible Xeon processor for your motherboard. They usually perform the same but cost almost half the price

one look at aliexpress https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20210624012953&SearchText=i5+7500 will tell you its decently priced for Pakistan..I mean you could get much better performance for cheaper in newer ryzen but as you said, you dont wanna go for those

Thank you for your answer. I was also under the impression that the price is inflated but looking at how the silicon shortage has ramped up the prices of used hardware I just wanted to be sure it was not my imagination. I had invested in LGA 1151 around two three years back. The board I have in a basic Gigabyte GA-B250M-D3H. At the time I went with a Pentium thinking I would upgrade my processor down the line when the prices are more reasonable which actually never happened. However three years down the road the prices are still inflated even though this is a obsolete platform now.

I am not sure if the motherboard I have will support a Xeon variant. The CPU compatibility list for this motherboard doesn't list any compatible Xeon processors

Thank you for this. Comparing it to the prices on AliExpress as indicated by the link you had provided suggests that the 26k price tag is a bit overpriced. For 21k or 22k I would have bought the processor in a heartbeat without giving it much thought, however in 26k its a bit overpriced. In your opinion are their any caveats to picking up the processor from AliExpress ?.

Investing in Ryzen would mean pretty much upgrading motherboard, CPU and probably the RAM as well (my current RAM will probably work but Ryzen thrives on faster ram). I am not sure I want to invest heavily on upgrading my machine at this point in time.

Which city are you in? cause in most major citiess, with a bit of searching, you will find some large scale wholesellers who deal in bulk new and second hand office computers and have warehouses...there I have previously gotten these "slightly" older processors for a cheaper price than market.

Aliexpress items might cost you custom charges, thus I said okayish priced. otherwise if the seller has high rating, then the risk goes down ( but there is always rick involved, specially with international shipping)

I am in Lahore. The 26k price i got was from a seller selling in Hafeez Center. I haven't gone on a full blown hunt to Hafeez Center yet but I am under the impression after the fire in HC a year back and also the silicon crisis the price of used components has jacked up.

I agree with your comments regarding shipping costs, custom charges in buying from AliExpress and the risk involved. I bought some DDR3 ram two years back from AliExpress.I did get the ram and it is in service to this date. However as you have indicated spending a significant amount of money on AliExpress and taking all the risk involved is probably not a wise thing when it comes to processors

That is a sweet deal you got there. That is an tangent that I need to explore as well. Thanks for the tip. I am increasingly getting convinced that its not really a good idea to invest 26k in just a processor that is 4 years old. If i can find a complete system for 25k with 7500, i can swap the processor in my current rig and put in the G4560 in the donor system. That system might be actually sufficient horse power for a kids system. I guess I should explore this as well.....

There has not been a shortage of Intel's CPUs, rather the opposite, hence lower than MSRP prices. AMD's 5000 series CPUs and GPUs in general are in shortage.

There is no standard price for a used item from a private seller, however, there is generally an average price of used items in the market. 7th gen low tier i5 CPU alone for 25K is way overpriced. Market price for 7500 CPU chip is around 10-15K depending on location.

Thank you for the insight that was very helpful, can you suggest potential places to buy 7500 or 7600 around the range you have indicated. I am located in Lahore so that is one place I am interested in finding a credible source, but i can potentially ask someone in Karachi to follow up if there is a credible source there as well

You're welcome, for used PCs or PC parts, you will get the best prices at the main PC markets where there is a lot of competition and excess stock.
In Lahore - Hafeez Center
In Karachi - Uni Plaza (I.I. Chundrigar Road) or Techno City Mall
In Rawalpindi - Bank Road, Saddar.
