Since, I wanted to share my driving experience and renting cars all over the world (where permitted). For me renting is (more) cheaper than taking a cab, only happy where metro's or transport is near the accommodation/hotels. I've driven so far into 15 countries on my International license + Local License. I've tried to keep the description into an easy understanding. Note : Pakistan IDP ( International Driving License of Pakistan ) isn't providing any more International Licenses to Foreign Passport Holders any more ( W.R.T - Oct 2019 ), only Pakistani Passport Holders can apply for this. No dual Nationality allowed (CNIC of Pakistan only, NO POC, NO NICOP)
IDP in Pakistan is valid for 1 year at an expense of around Pkr 1,500/= to 2,000/= (Karachi , DLS Clifton )
Requirement:
Photocopies of
- Local License ( Min 3 years experience needed )
- CNIC copy (Pakistani Only)
- Passport Copy (Pakistan Passport Only)
- Visa Copy
IDP will be issued to you with-in One hour (approximately)
This is where your International license should work with your Local license (else you need to purchase International License Online for any Foreigner)

- International Driver's License (book with regular plastic card): $48.00 US for 1 x Year and 2 years is around $65.00 US + Shipping to Pakistan via Fed Ex around $ 45 extra. So total you are spending around $100 to $120
The best part is that this is recognised by AA ( American Automobiles )which helps you also get's your local license ( of pakistan example ) to USA license ( local if you stay is more than 60 days ).
Why International License is required :
An international driving permit (IDP), often (incorrectly) referred to as an international driving licence (IDL), is any valid, legal identity document that allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle in any country or jurisdiction which recognises the document. To be valid, the IDP must be accompanied by a valid driving licence issued in the applicant's country of residence.
International driving permits issued by any party who does not have the authority to do so are considered invalid. An international driving permit is invalid if its format largely differs from that of the Vienna Conventions.
The IDP, whose A6 size (148 × 105 mm) is slightly larger than a passport, is a multi-language translation of the driver's licence from the issuing nation, complete with photograph and vital statistics.
An IDP is not required if the driver's domestic licence meets the requirements of the 1968 convention; the domestic licence can be used directly in a foreign jurisdiction that is a party to that convention.
In order to carry out a legality, we should carry our Local License of the country which we are travelling into.
Insurance Policies :
Do's and Don't for Renting a car with Insurance policy
1. Whenever you are travelling abroad and plan to rent a car, choose weekly rates which seem to reduce the car rates per day. Read the insurance policies as some are not offering in their description, so you might to purchase extra. If you cannot seem to locate, then you may purchase
From an online website, which is around $99 Dollars which mostly covers upto
- Rental Car Physical Damage Coverage: $40,000.00 for INDIVIDUAL RENTAL CAR PHYSICAL DAMAGE INSURANCE CERTIFICATE (will tell u from where u can purchase this)
- Insurance and full protection products for your rental car which includes full protection against costly damages, theft and supplementary protection such as lost keys, headlight repairs, flat tires and more. We fully protect customers from over-inflated repair bills from rental car companies and their over-priced insurance that has hidden exclusions and hidden costs.
2. Full Protection product is an enhanced version of what the rental company’s call “Super Collision Damage Waiver” (also called excess waiver, excess reduction or “Super Loss Damage Waiver”). Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), depending on your destination.
3. Add on's for insurances (extra’s) are entirely your choice which you will be paying more than what you demand, just get the basic car. That's it
It's entirely your choice to take an high priced insurance at the time of renting a car (which might add your car cost per day high) or choose wisely by purchasing beforehand.
