Games & Movies without Surround sound now don't give expected performance therefore a 5.1 or 7.1 Home theater system/ surround system or 7.1 Surround Headset is essential.
In case of 5.1 or 7.1 Home theater systems, there are actual 5 or 7 speakers that are placed strategically in front sides and behind to give perception of sound surrounding you.
But in 7.1 Headsets, how it is possible to put all those 5 or 7 speakers into such a limited space? So Surround sound is achieved through driver software that produce Virtual surround effect while using 2x speakers in most of the cases.
Therefore without driver software Headsets just work as 2 channel two speak system where its surround properties are actually done by7.1 audio drivers that comes with every 7.1 surround headset either inform of a software or a sound card with preinstalled in it.
