I'm helping my nephews build a gaming PC that we hope will last at least 5 years without needing an upgrade. Since I've been out of the loop for a fairly long time, I'm not very knowledgeable about computer hardware anymore. That said, this is what I've come up with so far:

Budget: 200,000 excluding peripherals like monitors, keyboard, mouse, speakers etc
Monitor: 1080p, 60fps

Casing, Rs.8,000: the cheapest mid-tower casing I can find from a known brand (eg cooler master, corsair etc)
Processor, Rs.40,000: i5-11400
Motherboard, Rs.12,000: the cheapest intel motherboard I can find, if theres a specific model please let me know
RAM, Rs.17,000: 16GB RAM from a brand like corsair, G skill, kingston etc
SSD, Rs.17,000: Cheapest 1TB HDD I can find from a known brand
PSU, Rs.8,500: Cheapest 600W 80+ PSU from a known brand
GPU, 1660Ti: Rs.100,000

This brings the total to Rs.202,500.
I've left out a HDD for now since one can easily be added in a few months.

I have some questions:
1.Is this an intelligent build within the budget?
2.Is the 1660Ti good enough, or shall I convince them to increase their budget for a 3060 (Rs.150,000)?
3.If they agree to get a 3060, is there any other component I can downgrade to save some money?
4.And finally, could you please name some decent, reputable, honest shops in Lahore that won't deceive them and will honor warranties etc

Thank you!

I would suggest u to go with rtx 3060 downgrade cpu to i3 for 20k if u dont have more money cuz i think 4 core 8 threads would be secure enough...

2 lac is a lots of money so rethink about every thing u get and try to save money from it... Happy gaming! :)

Edit:I am also thinking about a rig and i can manage to build one for around 60-70k excluding monitor and gpu etc...

I would suggest 3060 for good gaming experience at 1080p and since you want this build to at least last 5 years the 3060 is a good choice and I would recommend you to visit Al Hafeez shopping mall basement, there is a shop named PC fanatics and Hamza bhai there will definitely help you out with this build and provide reasonable prices. I also got my pc built there and Hamza bhai is really experienced with high end PC builds.

@dushman thats a quad core with 8 threads so i think it wont bottle neck...
Its not good enough to handle the 3060, you can check out benchmarks on Youtube. The 3060 won't be utilized to its max potential and its only good for low end gpus. Its just a recommendation if the op wants this build to last for at least 5 years, the rest is up to op.

I'm not an expert on the field but, recently my brother build his own pc. According to him, its a lot cheaper than buying a new one. Youtube tutorials were his friend during those times.

build a gaming PC that will last at least 5 years

Budget: 200,000 excluding peripherals
Welcome back to PC building, a lot has changed, AMD is the new performance leader in CPUs and prices for GPUs are inflated due to shortages.

Let's get to CPU basics first, Ghz & Core count do not translate to comparable performance, all 4-core CPUs or 4 Ghz CPUs are NOT alike, what matters is their Single Core and Multi core Performance numbers, IPC (Instructions per Cycle/Clock), Process Node (7nm Vs 14nm), TDP (Thermal Design Power) and Power Consumption etc. Which is why I would recommend going for AMD's Zen 3 (5000 Series) over an Intel 11th gen CPU.

Future proofing for next five years in PC building generally means buying at least a mid-tier system NOW that will still be viable for gaming in next 5 years albeit at lower settings.

CPU: 5600X with stock cooler

Mobo: B550 motherboard, ASUS/Gigabyte/Asrock have good boards, mATX are cheaper than ATX, buy the one that is available and cheaper, if you need WiFi then get a motherboard with built-in WiFi.

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB Dual Channel kit), 3600Mhz at CAS Latency ~14 / 16 depending on price. G.Skills Trident Z Neo is a good RAM for Ryzen but buy what is cheapest among above specs.

SSD: NVMe SSD at least 512GB for your system drive, ~3000Mb/s Read/Write, 970 EVO Plus or 980 Pro equivalent.

PSU: Get at least a 80+ Gold rated power supply, will save you in electricity costs in long term. you should be able to fit in an MSRP RTX3060 in your budget so PSU should be 650 watts or higher, don't skimp on PSU, cheap PSU will damage your hardware, get Corsair RM series or equivalent.

Casing: AirFlow matters a LOT. Get a case with good airflow. At a lower price point
Antec NX800 or higher budget Cooler Master H500M.

GPU: This is where at present I would recommend that you buy a cheap GPU that can give you display out and some FPS on games, later upgrade to a RTX3060. But if you want to buy 3060 at current prices then you'll have to increase your budget.

I like your mantra for buying whatever is the cheapest but if the prices are comparable then go for reputed brands that will last you longer, especially in Motherboards and PSUs that power up your other expensive items like CPU & GPU.

Guys thanks a lot for all the replies! Heres what I'm thinking:

1.I'm going to look into an AMD build as suggested above.

2.I checked Amazon and newegg and it seems that the 1660Ti and 3060 are only around Rs.5000 cheaper than what I'll find here. If this is true, then isn't it better to purchase GPUs locally, just in case something goes wrong and I need a replacement/repair etc?

3.I've been reading about GPU/silicon shortages, and the expected duration keeps getting bumped up. A couple of days ago I read an article that quoted some people in the industry saying the shortage is likely to last until at least mid-2023. I'm aware GPUs are heavily overpriced right now, but I'm afraid purchasing a cheap GPU right now with the intention of upgrading it to a better one in a year or two might not work out, because who knows when GPU prices will actually come down?

4.I thought about purchasing a second hand GPU. The problem is when I used to game, I never purchased a single second hand component, so I never developed the necessary knowledge/skills to evaluate second hand hardware. But if theres someone or some shop you guys can suggest that is reliable, I can look into it.

Correct, at present the retailers have also joined in to profit from price hikes and have raised MSRPs, prices in U.S. and here are comparable at the moment, only difference is in brands, you will mostly find Palit, Inno3D, Leadtek or maybe Zotac here, while ASUS, Gigabyte or MSI would be harder to find. But at times like these we can't be much picky. I bought locally as well.
3.GPU/silicon shortages, likely to last until at least mid-2023.
Correct, current projection for silicon shortage to EASE up is by Q2 '23 and that too might be extended. The decision of waiting or buying the GPU at current prices is ultimately up to you, we are just trying to say that it will cost you. Consult with your wallet, nephews or the financier of this build, my sympathies in advance.

Considering how much 1660ti/3060 cost nowadays, I would suggest buy new under warranty, and IF you get a good deal on used one then make sure it still has some warranty left, FurMark Stress Test shows no OverTemp or performance issues, no coil whine from fans, all outputs are working fine etc.

Amazon really offers great deal and the quality of the products are trusted. Actually, there are a lot of other online stores that offers lower cost than Amazon but, I'm hesitant that its only imitation.

What is peoples obsession with Battle Royale genre. 6 minutes to find a match, 3 minutes to setup a match, 2 minutes to land, 10 minutes for scavanging maybe 2 3 gunfigts and its over. Multiplayer landscape is looking absolute dogshit.
I tried playing Apex Legends once. Couldn't find a gun for 5 minutes straight. If I found a gun, I couldn't find the right ammo for it. Got killed fighting with my fists. Uninstalled it the next day.

After I watched it, I never felt like i watched a show. It was a friggin journey. I got way too attached to Thorfinn and seeing him grow up and find himself and get rid of all the negativity inside of him was just pure bliss.
