[h=1]Why didn’t Grand Theft Auto 5 get a single-player expansion?[/h]

[h=2]Rockstar explains what happened to the game’s story DLC[/h]

Rockstar Games has found success with story-based single-player add-on content for games like Grand Theft Auto 4 and Red Dead Redemption, but the company’s latest release — 2013’s Grand Theft Auto 5 — never got a story expansion.
Rockstar did have something planned in terms of additional single-player content for GTA 5 at one point. “For those ready to jump back into the story of Grand Theft Auto V, we have big plans for substantial additions in 2014 continuing Michael, Franklin and Trevor's action, mayhem and unexpected adventures in Southern San Andreas,” Rockstar said in a post on the Rockstar website in 2013.
But that DLC never came to pass. Instead, Rockstar focused its efforts on bringing the game to a new generation of consoles and on Grand Theft Auto Online — a move that certainly worked out for the studio. Grand Theft Auto 5 has since sold more than 80 million copies, so it’s hard to fault Rockstar for its efforts.
So whatever happened to that expansion to GTA 5’s story? In an interview with Game Informer, Rockstar director of design Imran Sarwar said it wasn’t a conscious decision to steer away from story-based content; it just ... kind of happened that way.
“With GTA V, the single-player game was absolutely massive and very, very complete,” Sarwar said. “It was three games in one. The next-gen versions took a year of everyone’s time to get right, then the online component had a lot of potential, but to come close to realizing that potential also sucked up a lot of resources. And then there are other games – in particular Red Dead Redemption II. The combination of these three factors means for this game, we did not feel single-player expansions were either possible or necessary, but we may well do them for future projects. At Rockstar, we will always have bandwidth issues because we are perfectionists and to make huge complex games takes a lot of time and resources...”
Sarwar stressed that Rockstar “would love to do more single-player add-ons for games in the future,” so don’t be surprised if the company’s next game, Red Dead Redemption 2, continues its story beyond what’s on the disc.

[h=1]GTA Online’s newest raid, The Doomsday Heist, is available now[/h]

[h=2]Yes, there’s an orbital cannon[/h]

Grand Theft Auto Online has launched what Rockstar Games calls its “biggest adventure yet,” The Doomsday Heist, now available in Grand Theft Auto 5.
The Doomsday Heist covers “three sprawling acts” and allows different crews of two to four players each to work cooperatively in completing the goals. Naturally, it involves thwarting a far-out plot “so diabolical it could end life as we know it.”
Criminal Organizations and Motorcycle Clubs alike are invited to participate and work together in The Doomsday Heist, which takes players to a subterranean facility of the International Affairs Agency (the CIA, basically) where everyone gets the plan together. New stuff includes the return of a jetpack, a big-ass tank, and a slew of weapons. There’s also an Orbital Cannon. Yes, really.
The Doomsday Heist builds up with preparatory missions in freemode play and experimental weapons and vehicles, culminating in a big finale for each of the three acts. Those who bring a motorcycle club to the quest line will be able to increase their membership to 8.

[h=1]Red Dead Redemption 2 bonus item may be hidden in GTA Online[/h]
[h=2]Why wait until the content is live to find its secrets?[/h]

GTA Online’s “The Doomsday Heist” update will tie into the Red Dead Redemptionuniverse and will perhaps solve a mystery in both franchises, based on findings from a recent datamine.
Players have been digging through the game’s files and found assets and code that indicate a Red Dead Redemption-themed mission, where you can ultimately earn a new revolver as well as a bonus in the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2, is in the works.

While the content isn’t live yet, players and dataminers have been attempting to figure out what they’ll need to do if the quest does appear in-game, in order to unlock the gun in the shortest amount of time.

This is what developers are up against when it comes to hiding content in their games these days: players dig through code, and they aren’t willing to wait until anything is live to find out what’s coming next. Datamining takes a bit of the mystery out of things, we suppose, but this is its own kind of treasure hunt.
“Beyond the eventual unlockable, one of the coolest things about this apparent mission is that it seems to close the loop on an ongoing myth within GTA V,” Kotaku reported. “Years ago, GTAplayers found an unmarked grave on the eastern coast of the map. Nobody knew who it was for, or what it referred to, though one of the theories was that it belonged to John Marston, given the events of Red Dead Redemption. Well, according to data miners, the clues for this RDR-related mission lead to that exact unmarked grave. Perhaps folks were right all along.”
This is an interesting way to get people talking about both GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption at the same time, and being able to hide this sort of content in an update to an online game is yet another advantage to treating at least some of the games in a developer’s catalog as services that will never truly be “finished.”

[h=1]Grand Theft Auto Online PC players receive numerous bannings after latest update[/h]
[h=2]Most say they’ve done nothing wrong, and they may be right[/h]

Grand Theft Auto Online’s community is reporting a wave of bans, either mistaken or for no good reason, following the game’s latest update. The bans seem to affect the PC version of the game as opposed to the console editions.
The bans in question, which last for 30 days, seem to coincide with Grand Theft AutoOnline’s latest update — the “Southern San Andreas Super Sport Series” that rolled out on Friday and added a new vehicle and stock-car racing events to the open world game. It seems that in addressing a car-selling exploit, some players have gotten banned on suspicion of unpermitted modding behavior despite doing nothing wrong.
“Rockstar’s anticheat seems to have truly failed, as, according to a post in the GTA online discord, a user using their own anticheat detected everyone else in their session was a modder,” says this post hailing attention to the banwave in the GTA Online subreddit. In other words, people doing nothing wrong are being singled out as illegal modders, resulting in a raft of bans without any explanation why.
Naturally, anyone banned always claims they didn’t do anything wrong, but the scope of the banwave in GTA Online suggests something is amiss. In some cases, banned players have less than 10 hours of game time which suggests a mistake or overreach on the part of whatever is moderating the game. Polygon has asked Rockstar Games for comment. But if the outcry in their own forums hasn’t provoked a response over the weekend, I doubt we’ll see one here.
The fact this is limited to PC players has some speculating that an issue relating to a mod menu, and anyone who has it installed is getting the axe. The so-called “tunables” update on PC was updated again early Sunday, which suggests an awareness of the problem and an attempt to fix it.

[h=1]Lindsay Lohan’s lawsuit against Grand Theft Auto 5 was shot down by New York state’s highest court[/h]

[h=2]However, ruling says video game avatars can be considered a person’s likeness[/h]

Lindsay Lohan’s lawsuit against Take-Two Interactive, regarding a parody character inGrand Theft Auto 5 that she said was an unlawful use of her likeness, has ended in New York state’s highest court. Six judges of the New York Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s ruling that rejected Lohan’s civil claim against Take-Two regarding the character “Lacey Jonas.”
Lacey Jonas is a one-off character appearing in a random event called “Escape Paparazzi” in Grand Theft Auto 5. Like Lohan, Jonas is someone notorious for a fast rise to fame who becomes a popular subject in tabloid media. Lohan brought her case against Take-Two in 2014. The publisher called it a publicity stunt.
Still, Lohan’s suit survived a motion for dismissal back in 2016 — no small feat considering her status as a pubic figure. But a New York Supreme Court judge (New York Supreme Court is actually trial-level state court) ruled against Lohan. That decision was affirmed in the state’s appellate division, and then on March 29 by the Court of Appeals.
The Court of Appeals’ decision centers on whether Lacey Jonas constitutes a “portrait” of Lohan under New York state law. Lohan said that the game’s widely distributed promotional, box and disc art (one sample is above) was such a portrait, used without her written consent.
While the unanimous ruling (one judge of the seven-member panel did not participate) found that a video game avatar may constitute a portrait, the characterization of “Lacey Jonas” in GTA 5 were “indistinct, satirical representations of the style, look, and persona of a modern, beach-going young woman that are not reasonably identifiable as plaintiff.”
Still, the ruling is significant in that it establishes, at least in New York’s jurisdiction, that video game avatars are a likeness equivalent to photographs, films or other depictions under the law. But it likely ends Lohan’s suit against Take-Two. Theoretically, she could appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, but she would have to show how the ruling and the state’s privacy laws conflict with an overriding Constitutional law or precedent.

After loitering in the top-sellers chart of every platform it’s been available on for the best part of four and a half years, GTA V is now the most profitable entertainment product ever, according to analysts.

Raking in around $6 Billion since its release in September 2013, GTA V has made more money than any book, film, record or video game ever released, and shows no signs of stopping.

The game has sold about 90 million units in its lifetime, placing it third on the all-time highest-selling list of video games behind Minecraft, which has sold around 144 million, and Tetris, which when you include all of the random phone ports has sold closer to 170 million.
GTA V is significantly more expensive to buy those games though, and when you factor in the money-spinner that is GTA Online – which added a the new San Andreas Super Sports Series car DLC at the end of March – it’s really no contest.
“Since its launch in 2013, GTA V has sold 90 million units, putting its total haul for publisher Take-Two Interactive in the neighborhood of $6 billion,” Doug Creutz, an analyst for Cowen told MarketWatch.
“Far above the success of blockbuster movies like Star Wars or Gone With The Wind, which both collected more than $3 billion, adjusted for inflation. Even taking into account DVD and streaming sales would not put the biggest movie blockbusters in GTA V’s neighborhood.”
As well as its online service fuelling its perennial lifespan, because of its popularity and content, GTA V constantly courts controversy, and stays in the news. Just a couple of weeks ago, Lindsay Lohan lost a long-running lawsuit in which she alleged that Rockstar had used her likeness without permission.
When it continues to make so much money, it’s no wonder that GTA 6 looks like it’s a long, long way off.

GTA 5: Premium Online Edition Announced

Rockstar has announced a new special edition of GTA 5, seemingly aimed at bringing in new players - but don't expect anything new for existing players.

Grand Theft Auto V: Premium Online Edition will be available on Steam, Xbox One and PS4, and comprises the full GTA V package (including the single player game and a fully-updated GTA Online) and a Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack bonus.

This pack seems to be aimed at bringing new players into the series as the Starter Pack gives GTA Online players weapons, properties, and vehicles as well $1,000,000 of in-game currency - a total of $10,000,000 of in-game item value.

The Premium Online Edition costs $79.99 USD / £59.99 / $99.95 AUD for a physical Xbox One or PS4 version or $84.99 USD / £67.99 / $110.34 AUD on Steam.

While bundles including the game and Criminal Enterprise pack have existed for some time, it appears that, on console at least, the Premium Online version is intended to replace the core version of the game by offering more for your money.

Sign in to GTA Online this week and next to get $250,000 of free GTA money

Seven new Transform races enter the fold this week, all with double RP and GTA$ till June 11.

The FIFA World Cup 2018 kicks off next week, which GTA Online is celebrating with a GTA$250,000 giveaway. Sign in between now and June 11 to register, and return after June 14 to net the complimentary windfall. "All GTA$ will arrive in your Maze Bank account no later than June 18th," says Rockstar.
This week's double RP and in-game money is tied to all Transform races, including the seven new tracks added today. As posted by GTA Series Videos, here's a single lap of each—named Plane and Simple, Size Matters, Evolution, Twister II, Canal Crosser, The Grotti Circuit and Tug Life.
Vehicle discounts this week include the amphibious Blazer Aqua for $1,228,920; the Ocelot XA-21 hypercar for $1,662,500; and the Tron-like Nagasaki Shotaro sports bike for $1,557,500—all with 30 percent discounts.
You'll need to complete a round of Deadline to unlock the latter, which is good fun when played with three or more players. For my money, the Shotaro isn't quite as entertaining in free play, though. And for that money, even with a discount, I'm not sure it's worth it.

[h=1]Casinos are coming to Grand Theft Auto Online[/h]

Ka-ching!

A new Grand Theft Auto Online announcement just hit Rockstar’s Twitter, and it looks like fans will be getting a long-time request fulfilled: in-game casinos. Casinos have been tricky to pull off, especially since players can purchase in-game cash with real-world money, but it looks like Rockstar has found a solution to let players enter, and likely even own and operate, their own casinos.

While we don’t know exactly how the casinos will end up working, they will likely serve as another business for players to run, along with car dealing, nightclubs, and drug running. Casinos may also allow for some fun hangout opportunities with friends in-game. In Red Dead Online, players can sit down and play poker with either a pre-existing party or in the open world with random players. It remains to be seen whether that will be possible in Grand Theft Auto Online, but I hope it is — I found a round of poker with strangers in St. Denis to be surprisingly fun.
More information on casinos will likely arrive in the weeks to come, and we’ll get answers to these questions. For now, we can celebrate knowing that another arena of vice and excess is on its way to the world of Grand Theft Auto.

[h=1]GTA Online’s casino, the Diamond, opens next week with new missions[/h]

Activities include gambling, horse betting, criminal enterprise

Grand Theft Auto Online’s long-awaited casino, the Diamond Casino & Resort, opens to players on Tuesday, July 23, and it’s coming with a set of story-based cooperative missions.
(Virtual) gambling activities include (three-card) poker, blackjack, roulette, slot machines, and good ol’ Inside Track Betting, whose outrageous horse names (scroll down here) thousands of GTA: San Andreas fans will fondly recall. The story stuff unfolds once players take ownership of a Master Penthouse atop the building. The posh suite is customizable, and it also confers membership in The Diamond family, which comes with a set of missions.
According to a post on Rockstar Newswire, that involves helping the Diamond’s owner, Tao Cheng, and the resort staff “protect their investment from the clutches of a corrupt family of Texan petrochemical magnates.” The missions are a series of co-op jobs that pays out awards for every completion, and players who hose the whole thread will get a brand-new vehicle. Additional work is available from the mission-giver Agatha Baker, the Diamond’s operations boss.

Rockstar GamesThe gambling pays out with “a variety of prizes,” so it doesn’t sound like people are playing for in-world cash. This is probably because that currency can be bought for real money. There’s a Lucky Wheel in the lobby doling out freebies like chips, cash and clothes, with a luxury auto as a jackpot. The first one available is the Truffade Thrax (pictured above). Those who want to buy their new look straight up can visit the Diamond Casino’s store.
How much does the Penthouse cost? They’re like $4.99 at the 7-Eleven, right? Oh, not that Penthouse. Well, Rockstar’s not too clear on what the gating is, but it sounds easy as they want everyone playing these new missions. Moreover, those who link their Twitch Prime accounts with their Rockstar Games Social Club accounts will get the joint for free, plus $1.25 million in-world bucks and a 15-percent bonus on purchases of Shark Cash Cards. More perks are coming soon, says Rockstar.
The Diamond has been an enormous, inaccessible, under-construction lot in GTA Online for most of the past six years. Some teaser tweets last month got everybody hyped for the grand opening, and the inclusion of Eddie Murphy’s egregiously awful 1985 pop hit (produced byRick James!) is just the cherry on top.

[h=1]GTA Online’s rarest car can only be won in the casino[/h]
Everyone wants the Vapid Lost Slamvan

For years, Grand Theft Auto Online players have been obsessed with the Vapid Lost Slamvan, a vehicle that is unremarkable except for the fact that there is no normal way to obtain it. Players could use the Lost Slamvan in story missions, but they couldn’t actually keep the lowrider. Some players circumvented this through the use of glitches, but Rockstar was adamant about keeping the car blacklisted from fans. Los Santos residents soon discovered that placing the car into a garage guaranteed that the Lost Slamvan would be deleted from your inventory.
“The fact that it’s sexy as fuck is undeniable, but the fact that it was unobtainable made it extremely desirable,” said Dirty_Worka, leader of one of the Reaper Lords, a top GTA Online and Red Dead Online clan. The Lost Slamvan a variation on the base Slamvan, which can simply be purchased from the game. Unlike the basic version, the Lost Slamvan has tweaked tail lights, license plates, and liveries.
“The reality is, the thing is almost undriveable!” Dirty_Worka continued. “It has insane horse power and slides all over the road ... but the raw power, murdered look, and outlawed status make it a cult classic.”
With the release of GTA Online’s casino, things have changed. The update introduces a Lucky Wheel that players can spin once per day for a prize, free of charge. Initially, there’s a one in 20 chance that you can win a “mystery prize.” Mystery prizes can be nearly anything, from a pack of cigarettes to a T-shirt. Vehicles are a category of mystery prize, and according to the GTA Wiki, there’s only a 14 percent chance you’ll win a car after landing on the Lucky Wheel. From here, GTA Online pulls from a longer list of available vehicles. All things told, you only have less than ~0.005 percent chance of getting a Lost Slamvan from the Lucky Wheel’s mystery prize — which makes it the rarest car in the entire game.
This nugget of information has sent hardcore GTA Online players into a frenzy: Finally, there’s a legit way of earning one of the most coveted cars in Los Santos! (Unless you’re on PC, as there are reports that the Lost Slamvan is glitched on there.) Some players are reportedly spinning the Lucky Wheel every chance they get, in the hopes of obtaining the car. Most, however, seem to be resorting to glitches to get the car, as now the game apparently allows you to keep the Slamvan once you have it.
“I Abuses will lead to baned and moaned for years after Rockstar took my vans from me,” said GTA Forums member LeakyLine. “And four years later, the Lost Slamvan is mine again.”
“I never imagined I would see the day where Rockstar unblacklisted it, and see so many players still being interested in a vehicle that was added four years ago,” said GTA Forums member Classique.
“It’s like seeing your crush again,” the forum-goer continued, “But where the flame hasn’t died after so many years. It’s kind of like Romeo and Juliet; a forbidden love that still happened. And Juliet has visually not aged a tiny bit. I am so glad to say that owning the Forbidden Van is no longer a sin.”

[h=1]GTA Online fans log in for free money, get robbed blind by glitch instead[/h]

Maybe don’t log in for now

Grand Theft Auto Online players who are logging in for money and loot are finding themselves with nothing to their virtual names.
A nasty bug appears to be getting rid of players’ luxury items. Players have suggested that they’re losing weapons, vehicles, and entire rental properties primarily PC, though there are errant reports on PS4, and Xbox One platforms as well. (It’s currently unclear if the missing objects are the result of the same glitch on all platforms.)
This timing is horrible, as Rockstar Games promised players $500,000 in-game just for logging in during April. “Literally the only things I have left are my clothes, money, rank, and a base arena workshop with none of my upgrades,” one player claims on Twitter. “‘EVERYTHING IS MISSING,” another exclaims.
Fortunately, GTA Online developer Rockstar Games has announced that they’re working on a fix. “We are aware of an issue in GTA Online for PC where some vehicles, weapons and properties are not displaying in character inventories and are actively working to resolve it,” the company said through a tweet.
It’s unknown if players will just get their properties back, or if Rockstar will give out some form of compensation. Seeing how some players are losing hundreds of millions of in-game dollars, the former would presumably work the best.
We’ve reached out to Rockstar Games for comment and will update this post when an update becomes available.
Update: Rockstar Games’ support Twitter notes that this bug has been fixed on PC. The company advises players to “restart your game and sign in again for these items to display correctly.”

[h=1]GTA Online's Free $500k Login Deal Is Happening Again This Month[/h]

Rockstar Games is giving every player who logs in to Grand Theft Auto Online in May a free $500,000, mirroring exactly what they did last month.

It looks like Rockstar isn't done giving away free money in Grand Theft Auto Online yet, as the company has once again stated than anyone who logs in during the month will receive $500,000 for free. This is a deal Rockstar introduced to Grand Theft Auto Online back in April, and one which saw a curious glitch that gave some players multiple free money login bonuses, allowing them to accrue millions of in-game currency with basically no effort at all.
While the current state of Grand Theft Auto Online is one of a game under siege by random alien gang attacks, there is also an undercurrent of financial concerns being shared by many players. Some think that Rockstar is purposefully tanking Grand Theft Auto Online's economyso that it will be easier to convince players to move to Grand Theft Auto 6's online mode when the time comes, and many are just sick of how expensive some of the in-game items have become.

Rockstar must know that some of their higher-end items are ridiculously expensive for players to acquire, and that may be part of the reason they are repeating last month's free Grand Theft Auto Online money login bonus, one which gives players half a million dollars for doing nothing but logging in to the game. Check out the official announcement from Rockstar's Twitteraccount below, which once again states that this will be a one-time gift, although last month'sGTA Online money glitches give cause for some doubt to that statement.

According to Rockstar's official website, there is also a discount on futuristic weapons currently going on, with sales like "40% off the Up-N-Atomizer, Unholy Hellbringer, and Widowmaker." Additionally, nightclubs are on sale for 40% off, and Grand Theft Auto Online players are also currently able to earn triple the normal amount of monetary and RP awards for Business Battles.
Despite the hard work of alien eradicator teams like Impotent Rage, Grand Theft Auto Online is still filled with all kinds of dangerous and expensive activities for players to engage in, and free money is always appreciated whether it's for buying a new vehicle or just for stocking up on ammunition to take on the current aggressive extraterrestrial menace. While many players are likely hoping for similar glitches which might allow the extra half a million dollars to drop into their Maze bank account multiple times, hopefully this month will see everyone who logs in to Grand Theft Auto Online getting their payouts at least once.

[h=1]Rockstar made green and purple alien suits free in GTA Online, adding fuel to the alien war fire[/h]

All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers

Grand Theft Auto Online’s alien gangs have taken over the world, and Rockstar is adding fuel to the fire. As of Thursday, players can pick up a Purple Martian Bodysuit or a Green Martian Bodysuit for free in-game. And while they’re at it, alien gang hopefuls can grab a free pool cue from Ammu-nation.
For the uninitiated, the alien gang war is a new trend in GTA Online. The idea is a group of players join up, dress in a Green (or Purple) Martian Bodysuit, jump in a van together, and mercilessly beat unsuspecting players with pool cues. If that sounds hilarious or annoying, we can assure you: it’s both.

This clip from Reddit user StraightWhiteMale02 has over 28,000 up votes on the GTA Online subreddit.
Players in Purple Martian Bodysuits have ganged up in opposition to the Green Martian Bodysuit players, and now all hell has broken loose. GTA Online now has its own, internal gang war. Players are spending hours grouped up with their friends, dressed in green or purple bodysuits, looking for players in the opposite color to beat with baseball bats.

Like most things in GTA, it would be disturbing if it wasn’t so funny. These bodysuits used to be fairly expensive, at over $330,000 each. But Rockstar seems to be encouraging players to join one of the two alien gangs by making both suits — and the signature pool cue weapon — free for the time being.
Innocent civilians just looking to drive a car around the city of Los Santos: If you can’t beat them, join them.
