God of War: Ragnarok Might Not Be a PS5 Exclusive Game
An interview with PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan suggests that God of War: Ragnarok may not be a PS5 exclusive game, but there are a few possibilities.
A new quote from PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan suggests that
God of War: Ragnarok may not be a PS5 exclusive game.
God of War: Ragnarok is the upcoming sequel to the franchise that has made Kratos an iconic presence on PlayStation consoles, and he often features in advertising for the platforms he's appeared on, tying him even further to Sony's gaming brand.
Not much is known about
God of War: Ragnarok at present, though the story has been confirmed to center around the apocalyptic scenario of
Ragnarok in Norse mythology. What that means for Kratos and his son is unclear - will they be fighting against it, encouraging it, or accidentally involved? - but it does offer the franchise a lot of different paths to follow, and given the previous game's excellent storytelling, it feels like a safe bet to assume whichever route it takes will be a compelling one.
God of War 2018 provided fans with plenty of teasers when its narrative came to a conclusion, and a lot of people believe the upcoming game may be Kratos' last journey, so anticipation is high for any further
details on God of War: Ragnarok.
One assumption fans may have made about the title could end up being false, however. While many believed
God of War: Ragnarok would be a PS5 exclusive, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan stated in an interview with
The Telegraph that he has "
nothing to say" about being able to confirm that
God of War: Ragnarok is a current-gen exclusive for the PlayStation console. It's a brief answer, and one that could simply be because there's an announcement coming soon, but it does open the door for different possibilities regarding
God of War: Ragnarok's exclusivity status.
With that being said,
God of War: Ragnarok being a true multiplatform title is by far the least likely scenario, even with the odd non-comment from Ryan. It's much more likely that Ryan is unsure right now about whether or not
God of War: Ragnarok is also going to release on PS4, as Sony has made a point of advertising its
support for its previous-gen console as the transition to PS5 begins for many consumers. There's also the chance that
God of War: Ragnarok on PC could be coming, as Sony has shown a willingness to port its console exclusives over to that platform with big titles like
Death Stranding and
Horizon: Zero Dawn.
If nothing else, Ryan's comment has people talking about
God of War: Ragnarok again, which is a win for PS5 and Sony.
God of War remains one of the console's most important franchises moving into the future, and it's likely that whatever decision is made on the upcoming game's exclusivity will directly impact PS5 sales - that's how big an influence the property has. For now, though, there's a lot of mystery surrounding an admittedly vague comment from Ryan, so fans should take a wait-and-see approach with
God of War: Ragnarok before any official announcements are made.
