Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has agreed a sensational transfer to Manchester United, according to reports.
Vermaelen, Arsenal's club captain, is thought to have been offered £100,000 a week to move to Old Trafford when he returns from the World Cup.
The Belgian international, who can play either centre-back or left-back, is thought to be earning around £70,000 a week at the Emirates. Because he has less than a year left on his contract, he is likely to be available for a relatively small fee.
However many United fans are likely to be underwhelmed by the signing, as Vermaelen struggled to get into the Arsenal team on a regular basis last season, having lost his place to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
The former Ajax defender cost Arsenal £10m in 2009 and has made 110 appearances for the North London club.
United have already been linked with a host of defenders this summer, including Luke Shaw, Eliaquim Mangala and Ezequiel Garay, however it appears new manager Louis van Gaal has chosen to make Vermaelen his first signing.

Rumour is that Falcao has agreed personal terms with Real Madrid and the move will be announced immediately following the end of the World Cup.
i remember people claiming last year that the falcao to monaco move was temporary, because he didnt want to make a direct move to Madrid from Atletico.... funny how things turn out....
Now that Falcao has gone to Madrid, Barca will be his destination IF he chooses to leave. The offer is good. Around 57m plus Sanchez. I would take this offer if Suarez does not want to stay, especially considering all the hate he has been receiving in England. I highly doubt Fenway wants to sell, though. In any case it will be much better to see him in Barcelona than at Real Madrid.

MAtS will be 1st choice but Bravo is brought in to to be an experienced backup option. Who knows Lucho might go the Madrid route and play one in CL, one is La Liga and Masip in the Copa
I still can't understand Bravo's signing. I mean he's 31, cost us like €12M and is not as good as everybody's making him. On the other hand, Keylor Navas, 27, was the best goalie in Europe last season according to WhoScored . Com and he has a buy-out clause of €10M. Why not go for him? Don't even need to negotiate, pay his buy-out :/
