[h=2]Is Fortnite: Battle Royale a clone or the latest game in a new genre?[/h]

Earlier this week, Epic Games announced the PUBG-inspired, battle royale variant ofFortnite, its long-in-development sandbox survival game, would be released for free on consoles and PC next week. This development isn’t sitting well with the team at Bluehole, the developers of Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, who use Epic’s Unreal Engine to power the early access megahit. A press release issued by Bluehole this morning suggests the team is contemplating “further action.”
“We’ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game,” Bluehole’s Chang Han Kim said in the press release. “After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known.

PUBG and Fortnite's argument raises the question: Can you own a genre?

“We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press,” Chang Han Kim continues. “This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right.”

In the announcement trailer for Fortnite: Battle Royale, Epic’s Donald Mustard says, “At Epic, were huge fans of the battle royale genre, and games like PUBG and H1Z1." In theblog post announcing the version, under “The Fortnite Team” byline, Epic writes, “We love Battle Royale games like PUBG and thought Fortnite would make a great foundation for our own version.”
Before Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds was released earlier this year, creator Brendan Greene consulted on H1Z1’s battle royale mode, later spun off as H1Z1: King of the Kill, and cut his teeth creating battle royale mods for military sim ARMA.
The press release cites a Reddit AMA with Greene in which he said in response to a question about other publishers — notably, not Epic — entering the space, “Other companies will, of course, enter the marketplace, but I would just hope they put their own spin on the game mode and not just make a carbon copy!”
Despite that expectation, Chang Han Kim suggests the similarities between the two products are too close for comfort. “The PUBG community has and continues to provide evidence of the many similarities as we contemplate further action.”

I don't think the studio has a problem with clones in general. The somewhat shady part is that Epic Games, who have been providing engine assistance to Bluehole for PUBG, suddenly revealed a free-to-play game mode with the same idea for Fortnite, which also runs on UE4. Now they'll reach out to XBO and PS4 gamers much faster than Bluehole and build a user base long before PUBG's eventual release for both platforms.

adding to this

Fortnite's Battle Royale mode is launching as a free mode for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
The
100-player PVP mode in Fortnite will be completely free for everyone from 26th September. There's no need to have paid for the base game.

It's a canny move - gazumping the launch of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds on console and beating its paid-for model by launching without charge
.

I'm sure the hype for Fortnite will die down eventually but despite that, PUBG really missed a chance here.

@Chandoo this is free 2 play and doesn't require PS+. You probably aren't into multiplayer, but no harm in giving it a go.

I'm guessing you didn't want to try the PC version because it's only available on the Epic Games client and not on Steam? lol

Fortnight real game mod involves lots of base building. Thus it was easy for them to Add that feature in Battle Royal mod. Also Fortnights programming base is very strongly made thus they can expand the game much faster rate then PUBG, Thus there is chance that Fornight might last longer then PUGE. Unless PUGE team something special to win Players back. Maybe a discount on there game...

[h=1]Fortnite devs are tinkering with the look of Battle Royale[/h]
[h=2]New character models are a far cry from Pixar-friendly[/h]

Fortnite’s art style is a conspicuous departure from other zombie games, with its cartoony proportions and bright colors. But the developers seem to be going in a new direction with its free-to-play cousin, Fortnite: Battle Royale.
When Fortnite was released into early access over the summer, I remarked how it seemed to resemble an episode of The Walking Dead done by Pixar. It seems that’s about to change in Battle Royale. In a recent post, the team said it’s in the process of changing the character models, and the example given is more military inspired than ever.

“There is a desire for variations with strong personality, uniqueness, and a sense of cool and beautiful detail. Basically badass stuff,” said Epic. “We’re working on full remodels for gliders, pickaxes, and characters that achieve this vision; please keep checking the store for updates.”
The post also outlined many other changes coming to Battle Royale, including a revamped inventory system and new shooting mechanics. Here’s a quick roundup of what they’ve got planned:

  • The ability to form twosomes and squads with your friends more easily.
  • Better enforcement of the anti-team killing rules.
  • A new shooting model that will “remove random bullet spread while aiming down sights,” a holdover from vanilla Fortnite.
  • More granularity in post-match statistics.
  • Filling in the empty parts of the map with points of interest.
  • Revamped audio, including more granular sound for footsteps as well as improving spatial sound.
First and foremost, however, the team is prioritizing raw performance.
“Our near term focus,” Epic said, “is providing a rock solid 30 FPS experience on consoles.”
Both Fortnite and Fortnite: Battle Royale remain in early access. You can read the entire post here.

[h=1]Fortnite: Battle Royale gets a new 50-versus-50 team mode[/h]

[h=2]Free and available immediately after the Game Awards[/h]

Epic Games has announced a brand new 50-versus-50-player game mode for Fortnite: Battle Royale. The free mode will appear as a new playlist inside the unified Fortnite client on Mac, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. It will only be available for a limited time, from Dec. 8 to through Dec. 17.
The new game mode will allow players to form squads with up to four of their friends, and then merge them into a random team of 50 players. Everyone on your side will appear in-game with a green chevron over their heads. Friendly fire will be turned off, and players will be able to offer aid to those on their side who have been downed but not finished off. The game will proceed until one entire side has been eliminated.
Developers at Epic tell Polygon that they hope the new game mode will provoke new and unusual uses of Fortnite’s building mechanics. Official art shared in advance of tonight’s announcement shows one team behind a wood and brick barricade fending off waves of attackers from the other team.

Epic Games’ Fortnite is a for-pay game currently in early access development. Fortnite: Battle Royale is a free-to-play multiplayer survival shooter also in early access that shares some of the same mechanics as the root game. Both titles are accessed through the same unified game client on all platforms. The team recently released a development roadmap which includes planned improvements such as new player models.
Epic told Polygon that it recently reached a new milestone over the weekend when more than 1.3 million concurrent players were logged into the unified Fortnite client. Epic was unable to say how many players were in the Battle Royale game specifically.
The company added that 30 million unique accounts have been created since launch in order to download and play the game. That includes users who paid full price for Fortnite, and those who downloaded the free-to-play Battle Royale version.

I played a few games of the 50v50 mode last night, it's pretty fun though not knowing anything about Fortnite, the base building stuff was extremely confusing to me.

The map is considerably smaller than PubG so the games finish a lot quicker too which may be a good or bad thing depending on who you are.

Also PS4 Pro version brought back the option to unlock frame rate which they had taken out before. It helps really well with controller response and aiming. Managed to get a few good kills and placed 4/100 on my first solo game. Not bad.

is there a PG group for this ? In a pubG less word, this is the best free alternative on the PS4 :p

[h=1]Fortnite season 3 is now live[/h]
[h=2]Servers are back online after some brief downtime this morning[/h]

Fortnite developer Epic Games launched the game’s third season of content this morning. That followed a brief period of downtime as Epic scrambled to stabilize the new patch.Fortnite’s free update applies new content to the Save the World and Battle Royale game modes, including new avatars and collectibles as well as a few subtle tweaks to the game.
The announcement came via Twitter this morning around 6 a.m. ET that season 3 had launched. Less than 30 minutes later, the Fortnite Twitter account said that the servers would need to be taken offline.

The outage lasted more than three hours before the servers came back online. Epic reports that systems are now back to normal. Polygon has reached out for more details.
Fortnite’s third season includes the option to purchase a Battle Pass, which includes a bundle of cosmetic rewards without the need to acquire them through gameplay. That includes new space-themed skins. A Battle Pass will run you 950 V-Bucks, Fortnite’s in-game currency. That’s the equivalent of $10 in real money. As players level up the pass, which should take between 75 and 150 hours, they will accumulate even more cosmetic equipment. Alternately, players can pay for those upgrades to the tune of nearly $150.
This update also includes a so-called “turbo building” mode, which must be turned on in the game’s menu. When active, players will be able to place the same item, like a wall or a ramp, quickly with the press of a single button. Another feature, called “Auto Change Materials,” will give the game permission to use another, more valuable building resource automatically once you run out.

[h=1]Fortnite: Battle Royale is getting a 20-versus-20-versus-20-versus-20-versus-20 mode[/h]

[h=2]This is going to be a lot of fun[/h]

Fortnite’s free Battle Royale game is being updated with a new mode that will pit five teams of 20 players each against one another to see who can survive the longest. The free update is coming to the game tomorrow, March 8. You can watch the trailer at the top of this post.
The ability to play with five groups of twenty players will only be available for a limited time, so be sure to jump online to check it out before it leaves the game. Breaking each round up into five teams should significantly change how people play, especially if large groups of players are able to organize into 20 person teams with voice chat and squad tactics.
Fortnite: Battle Royale has previously experimented with a 50 vs. 50 mode, which also significantly altered the flow of combat if you were playing with organized groups. And these options are just the beginning.
“We’ve been using multiple data points (including your feedback) to iterate our existing [limited time modes]’s and to build brand new LTM’s,” Epic Games stated in a recent blog post. “We are planning to quickly spin up a dozen or so LTMs, some of these may be more straightforward (e.g. along the lines of Sniper Shootout, Sneaky Silencer etc.). We also use LTMs to test new Shooting Models.”
Some of the upcoming modes that will be coming to the game include:

  • Blitz Mode (shorter matches!)
  • Drop into the first circle
  • Generally less time between circles
  • Team sizes in between 50-versus-50 and squads
  • 50-versus-50 version 2
Epic Games continues to shake up the formula in its most popular game, and it’s fun seeing what gets added to Fortnite in these ongoing limited time modes and continual updates.

[h=1]Fortnite Battle Royale is coming to mobile[/h]

[h=2]Hitting iOS first, then Android[/h]

Epic Games announced that it is developing a mobile version of Fortnite Battle Royale, the incredibly popular free-to-play mode for the multiplayer game. Users on iOS will soon be able to sign up to receive invites into an early version of the game, with Android support to come thereafter.
“On phones and tablets, Fortnite is the same 100-player game you know from PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac,” said the development team in a blog post. “Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates.”
Both mobile versions will even offer cross-play, including the ability to maintain progression across platforms, with the Mac, PC and PlayStation 4 versions. And iOS users will be able to take on Android owners when the latter version is available.
Over the next few months, Epic Games will allow small numbers of players into the game in regular batches as part of an invite event process. Registering on the game’s official website will get you on the email list; players who receive invite codes will then be able to share them with friends. This will open on Monday, March 12.
A fully featured version of Fortnite Battle Royale — one of the hottest games du jour — for mobile devices is a wild concept, but Epic Games thinks this is only the beginning.
“We believe this is the future of games,” the developer wrote. “The same game on all platforms. Console quality graphics and action. Play when you want, where you want.”

Update: Mobile players have the choice to opt into PlayStation 4 and PC queues, while PS4 and PC players can’t jump into mobile lobbies, said Epic Games rep Nick Chester on Twitter.
“A PC gamer cannot join a mobile queue, but a mobile gamer can opt in to play with a PC player,” Chester explained. “They’re not all dumped into one matchmaking pool.”
Although Epic hasn’t clarified whether PC and console players have the choice to block mobile users from entering their lobbies, at least anyone who exclusively plays Fortnite Battle Royale on iOS and Android will be able to decide whether or not they want to take on the bigger consoles.
