343 Industries showed gameplay during the Xbox Games Showcase

343 Industries and Xbox Game Studios debuted gameplay footage from Halo Infinite, the next game in the long-running Halo franchise, during Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase on Thursday. From the trailer shown during the event, Halo Infinite looks a lot like Halo: Combat Evolved, with plenty of familiar weapons and enemies — plus a new gameplay twist.

It’s the first time we’ve seen any actual footage from Halo Infinite. Specifically, 343 Industries showed a clip where Master Chief and the Pelican pilot — who is very angry — from the game’s 2019 cinematic trailer land on a broken Halo ring.

Typical Halo chaos ensues, but now Master Chief’s got a grappling hook. Players will recognize a bunch of stuff in the trailer, from the familiar enemies to recognizable weapons and Warthog driving. There’s also a reference to The Banished, a group of alien species that rebelled from the Covenant and were featured in Halo Wars 2.

Halo Infinite
is said to be “several times” larger than the previous two Halo games combined. Players will be able to experience an expansive world that’s explored differently than in previous Halo games.

Halo Infinite is expected to pick up where Halo 5: Guardians left off, sometime after UNSC Infinity — a massive carrier ship — escapes Cortona (who’s gone bad and is leading a bunch of AIs) through emergency slipspace.

Halo 5 was the second game in the Reclaimer saga, which kicked off with Halo 4 in 2012. Halo Infinite’s been described as a “spiritual reboot” for the franchise. Last year, 343 Industries described the game as “a new chapter and challenge for the Chief,” and a “perfect starting point of new players.” However, the developer said at that time that Infinite will still “respect and continue threads that led to this point.”

Halo Infinite will be released alongside the Xbox Series X this holiday season.

Damn, this reeks of cross-gen. But but...games are scalable, right? Where are my "tacked on 'reshade preset' features"? lolol

IGN spoke with Halo Infinite Studio Head Chris Lee ahead of today’s long-awaited gameplay reveal of Halo Infinite. During that conversation, Lee revealed that Infinite is the last standalone release for the franchise for the foreseeable future.

“Halo Infinite is the start of our platform for the future,” he said. “We want Infinite to grow over time, versus going to those numbered titles and having all that segmentation that we had before. It’s really about creating Halo Infinite as the start of the next ten years for Halo and then building that as we go with our fans and community.”
This does not mean that Halo Infinite is a live service game, a la Destiny. But it does mean that new story experiences will be told underneath Infinite’s umbrella, and it also means Infinite will be evolved technologically for quite a while. 343 confirmed that Infinite will get a free raytracing update sometime after launch.
"We are a live service, but this does not mean we are a live service" :ROFLMAO:

So this is Xbox's new Game Pass derived business model. Please remain subscribed to our service beyond 2022 to see development flourish for your favorite franchise lmao.

For some reason,
The gunplay felt a lot more stiff than what I remember in Halo: CE and Halo 2.

Which really kills the "Nostalgia" feeling they're going for with Infinite. lol

The showcase was meh tbh... I have always loved Halo and Gears but even Infinite's gameplay video wasnt enough to salvage the ground that MS has lost and is still losing imo. Also Halo didnt feel a like a next gen game at all. I still loved watching it and the changes they have made to it but visually the game felt as an XBOX ONE X game rather than a true Series X game. Apart from Halo the only game that seemed good was Everwild, i loved the art but like every other game there was no gameplay and to top it all I dont even know the genre of that game.

For me it absolutely makes no sense to upgrade to Series X from what I have seen as of yet. On the flip side, I wont be able to play DS remake, Ratchet, Spidey, Horizon while still being on the pro so thats more than a reason enough to upgrade.

Halo Infinite looks like classic Halo, for better or worse

The graphics are .... fine

When

When fans look at Halo Infinite, Microsoft wants nothing more than for them to think of the original 2001 game. Not only is Halo Infinite being marketed as a “spiritual reboot” that goes back to series roots, the newly-revealed cover art also harkens back to the days of Combat Evolved. The nostalgia play has one purpose, and that’s to convince everyone that, despite recent franchise misfires, the developers do know what makes a Halo game good.

This might explain why 343 Industries opened the Xbox Games Showcase with Halo Infinite footage that is heavily reminiscent of Combat Evolved’s opening level, which is also Warthog-focused. The problem? Halo Infinite looks almost too similar to prior generations of video games, when developers loved muted palettes that could blend right into some military camo, plus the occasional neon color accent. It’s no wonder, then, that many fans on social media have found themselves underwhelmed by the graphics on display. Many onlookers are pointing out how flat the game looks, or dunking on the textures and details via memes.

To some degree, the jokes are unfair. The visuals accomplish exactly what they set out to do, which is remind us of classic Halo. We also can’t yet speak to how well the game plays, which is always the most important bit. At the same time, with Microsoft constantly touting that the Xbox Series X will be the most powerful console ever, expectations have been set high for their flagship game. People want to see what the next-gen console can do, especially if they’re going to drop hundreds of dollars for some new hardware. And right now, some fans don’t think Halo Infinite is moving the needle.

But there’s a more existential question at play here. Halo Infinite could have greater graphical fidelity, or a million shiny bits and bobs for us to gawk at. But the aesthetic itself — that blocky, borderline cartoonish design of enemies and weapons, coupled with the light-blue HUD — is outdated. Much in the same way that Gears of War’s chest-high cover is embedded into the DNA of its beefy bros, Halo’s aesthetic is tied to a different era of video games. Without a restyling of the game’s art direction, Halo is doomed to look out of place with modern video games.

Halo Infinite does indeed remind people of Halo: Combat Evolved now, but perhaps 343 Industries got it a little too right.

Honestly, graphics aren't my concern with Infinite. It's that the game has been developed to run on Xbox One, which means it isn't designed with higher I/O speeds, higher CPU headroom, and larger pool of memory in mind. Considering that 343i intends on taking it forward as a 10 year project, I'm not sure what they have in mind in terms of scalability. Will it continue to support Xbox One throughout its 10 year life-cycle? Or will there be a cut-off period? Only time will tell.

That said, at the end of the day, gameplay is king. If Infinite plays well, I'll be there day 1 on PC. It seems like 343i wants to bank on Halo: CE nostalgia in terms of look and feel. I do agree with what GloriousChicken said about the gunplay looking stiff compared to Halo: CE/Halo 2, though it's hard to say for sure without having played it.

The gunplay was the most impressive part for me in the demo. Everything looked super smooth, punchy and slick while not deviating too much from how Halo should feel. The added mobility due to the grappling hook, using it to grab items, get closer to enemies, reach higher ground etc. looks great.

Not concerned about the visuals really. If this is targeting 60fps on One X then obviously there will be concessions made since this is also an open world game to boot. Don't think any first party open world game on PS4 Pro runs at 60fps. Any game prioritizing 60fps across SP and MP should be commended for doing that imo.

inFamous Second Son and it's DLC have a pretty good 60 FPS mode which stays north of 58~ to 60 FPS during general traversal almost all the time and at most has drops to mid 50's during hectic combat.

Also MGSV, which targets 60fps on base consoles and looks better than Infinite. It was also a cross-gen game, but held its own on current-gen consoles.

A variable 60fps profile then. It's clearly a game designed to run 30fps first and foremost.

Compare that to Halo 5 Guardians on base Xbox One, a game that prioritized a silky smooth 60fps and achieves it far better than the Second Son on Pro.

15574 frames displayed for 16.7ms (99.85%)

Would be interesting to see if Infinite also aims for 60fps on base console too but on One X they will likely have a better performing game than Second Son/First Light on Pro.

In addition to MGSV, there's also Rage 2, which runs at 60fps on the Pro and One X. And these are open world games, which Halo Infinite is not.

The build used to run the campaign demo was work-in-progress from several weeks ago with a variety of graphical elements and game systems still being finished and polished.

The footage shown being from a several weeks old build means there likely won't be any major graphical improvements for XSX and PC at launch.

Halo Infinite multiplayer will reportedly be free-to-play

Leak reveals potential plans for the XBox Series X launch title

Halo

Halo Infinite
’s multiplayer experience may be free-to-play, according to information published on an Irish toy retailer’s website. According to The Verge, Smyths Toys Superstores — a large retailer in Ireland and the U.K. — briefly published a promotional page with information about the Xbox Series X and Halo Infinite. The page was removed, but cached version are available online.

On the website, Smyths wrote that Halo Infinite will have a “groundbreaking free-to-play multiplayer experience.” It also noted that gameplay will run at 120fps with “greatly reduced load times.”

We’ve reached out to Microsoft for more information.

Following up on the information, an Xbox leaker also added that Halo Infinite will have a battle pass system and “customization options completely new to Halo.” This leaker has previously provided accurate information on Halo Infinite, according to The Verge.

Developer 343 Industries revealed Halo Infinite gameplay during the Xbox Games Showcase on July 23. However, 343 Industries declined to comment on the game’s multiplayer, noting that new information would be available in the coming months. In a blog post published Thursday, 343 Industries said it’s not sure “what is going to be possible” with regards to a potential multiplayer beta period. “We still hope to have an opportunity for broader public hands-on before release,” the developer said.

A number of games have moved to the free-to-play multiplayer format following Fortnite’s success. Battle royale games, in particular, have made the format quite popular, whether that’s with Fortnite, Apex Legends, or Call of Duty: Warzone.

Halo Infinite is expected to be released alongside the Xbox Series X later this year. It’ll come to Xbox Game Pass immediately.
