^ yes, what Radical said is absolutely correct. Those impressions of mine were from the pre-release demo, where the combat hadn't really opened up.
The jump is indeed automated, and all you need to do is lock on to an aerial enemy and Cloud takes off to fight them mid-air. The verticality is there, just without a jump button, which is no issue here. You're in control of 4 character, and constantly switching between them in combat. Cloud can switch between stances while attacking and also cancel out of them via parry. The system works, and it works damn well.
Also, Yuffie's combat is super fun.
