Im not making fun or comparing the switch wtf are you on? I'm praising it for it's sheer power being a portable device. Truly a psvita biggest fear in ages to come (that if they even decide to make a portable PlayStation again)

I can't contribute much to the Switch open world discussion, but I'm sure @CerebralTiger @manigamer and others can contribute more between this and Breath of the Wild, whichever looks better among the two.
Those TW3 captures are 720p. I'm assuming they were taken with the Switch in docked mode. Also, it remains to be seen how well it maintains its target frame rate.

Purely from the perspective of graphics, TW3 looks a lot better than BoTW. BoTW uses a cel-shaded art style to cut back on detail, and has simpler environmental geometry. But it also makes heavy use of physics, runs at 900p in docked mode, and maintains 30fps for the most part in its current state.

Switcher 3 runs at 540p hand-held and 720p w/ dynamic resolution when docked. Nowhere near either mode's native resolution.

but a more technically accomplished, massive open-world RPG running 720p/540p 30fps gets all the hate...

Not weirder than falling in love with Doom's Switch version, but hating on a more advanced game running natively (Crapcom streaming lulz) on the same platform :p

Their method is both unrelated to the discussion yet still more faithful to the actual game instead of a severely downgraded version running native.

Hey, you were the one assuming they will follow StreamCom's approach.
Or it could just be a streaming version like RE7 and a few other Switch games.
It serves to remind you that you still haven't mentioned a game of similar graphical fidelity and scope running natively on the Switch, enough to warrant your hate spree...

Yes, and then I posted a youtube video which showed the Switch version running side by side next to a base PS4 and it looked a hell of a lot closer to the PS4 then this does ..

The only Switch caliber game I've played myself is Breath of the Wild on PC via emulation (and granted it's the Wii U version, but you get the idea) and that is a 100% turnaround over TW3 on Switch.

However I've also played TW3 on two other devices and am commenting on what I'm seeing. The differences are too damn high.

DF have praised the switch ports of both Doom and Wolfenstein despite their cut-backs, I don't expect different from them here. This rhetoric of "but look at the switch's hardware specs guys" is weird to me because .. ok yeah the hardware specs are weak compared to the PS4 and XBO .. do we just not comment on the cut-backs then ?

by that logic there should be no commentary from high end PC owners on PS4/XBO ports .. because just look at the hardware specs in comparison mirite ? :p

But you supported this rhetoric even in case of Switch because you thought its impressive that Id Tech 6 was running on it. Both the games you mentioned have made more severe cut backs on Switch on top of already being linear corridor shooters. Why suddenly compare Switcher version to PS4/XB/PC versions at 1080p Ultra and not Doom/Wolfenstein PC/console versions to Switch?

Sure, comment. But when did I deny the cutbacks? They got RED Engine ported to the Switch and a game as ambitious as Witcher 3 on it. Its not like I'm praising Thronebreaker on Switch here lol

I expected BoTW level of sacrifices to geometry/foliage/draw distances. This is pretty damn impressive to me.



Performance level is still unknown but unless they halve the target frame rate like Doom/Wolf did, 15fps in this case since W3 was 30fps on consoles lol, it's an impressive feat for Switch and the teams that ported it. A sub-30fps experience wouldn't be that far off from the console versions :p

I would like to see it running on the switch first. It actually may look really nice in HDR 500p ...er, in 720p docked on a big 4k screen!

720p is dynamic. Technically CDPR said the XBO version is also 'dynamic 1080p', but the only place that version runs at 1080p is on the main menu. Nowhere in the game (even when looking at the sky) does it ever go 1080p (Source: DF)

The only native 1080p thing in the XO version is the menu screen! And maybe the video files too.

Most (all ?) PS4/XBO versions aren't this cut-back compared to their PC equivalent. Most target medium/high PC level pre sets at 1080p/900p with 30 FPS.

With Pro/XBX the console versions are better than ever before too. New games like RE2, DMC, Sekiro etc run at much higher than 1080p resolutions with fairly decent PC-spec visuals with close to solid target frame rates. Even TW3 maximizes the consoles it's on. Pro runs at 2160p with CB rendering, X runs at native 4K, base runs at native 1080p. XBO and Switch are the only two devices which don't come close to the target/native resolutions of their devices and Switch makes significant visual cutbacks along with the resolution downgrade.

And yes you may apply this to Wolfenstein and Doom as well. I'm not going to defend them here, I promise :p

Lack of 60FPS alone is a *huge* cut-back.

PS4/XB1 are not portable gaming machines. If Switch wasn't a mobile platform, I wouldn't have been impressed with the port. Though it can be docked, its the need for mobility that limits its specs in comparison.

I didn't believe it could look like this but there it is. I still don't think it can maintain console level sub-30fps frames, but if it manages to come close to that level of performance, I'd be shocked. Again.

Nintendo stole the show this year





If there’s an underlying theme to this year’s E3, it’s transition. Sony isn’t at the event at all. Microsoft is making moves for the future, banking on ideas and technologies that have not yet reached their full potential. New consoles are in the horizon. Seemingly every game worth talking about is coming in 2020.
And there’s Nintendo, pitching us largely on stuff for hardware we have right now. While there are rumors of an updated system model for the Switch, Nintendo isn’t devoting the bulk of its resources to making entirely new systems. Nintendo can focus on what it does best: games. Given the Switch’s limited graphical capabilities, Nintendo has no choice but to focus on the bones that make up its games, rather than wasting time trying to render the most realistic hair possible or what have you.
This, in combination with the slow death of the 3DS, has allowed Nintendo to devote an extraordinary amount of focus on a single piece of equipment, rather than splitting its focus between a console and a handheld. The company doesn’t have to choose what system gets what property anymore: It’s all for the Switch, of course.
People like to joke that the Switch is a repository for ports and remakes, and many of the announcements for Nintendo’s E3 presentation did little to disprove that. At the same time, portability changes everything for some games. Yes, I already have The Witcher 3. I haven’t beaten it; there’s so much game to get through. But being able to take The Witcher 3anywhere means I’m that much more likely to actually get through it. Nowadays, I play my Switch way more than any other console. If something is announced, it’s not uncommon for me to think, “I’ll wait for the Switch port.” Nintendo has changed the way I approach gaming entirely this generation. I’m just as excited about old games as I am new games.
This isn’t to say Nintendo has nothing new to show. Super Mario Maker 2’s extended level-creation tools look absolutely bonkers. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues to barrel forward with exciting new characters. Seemingly every new monster announced for Pokémon Sword and Shield instantly becomes a fan favorite. Luigi’s Mansion 2 seems to eschew the arcadey nature of the 3DS game, and promises to get back to its roots. My entire social media feed seems to be dying to play Animal Crossing, especially after the disappointment that wasPocket Camp. Link’s Awakening looks cute as hell, and the ability build your own dungeons is a killer new feature. Cadence of Hyrule looks like a rad new take on Zelda. The next Fire Emblem game, which follow the lives of students in an academy, seems to take after Persona franchise in the best possible way. Astral Chain looks great based on what Nintendo has shown off during its Treehouse stream, but really, what else do you need to know other than it’s being developed by PlatinumGames? I’m excited by nearly everything that Nintendo showed off today.
We haven’t even gotten to the biggest bombshell at E3 this year: Breath of the Wild, one of the best games of all time, is getting a sequel. Never mind that it seems likely we’ll finally be able to play as Zelda. Nintendo probably could have announced this piece of information by its lonesome and it would have still won the entire show.
As Sony and Microsoft and gear up for their next era, they’re being pulled in a million directions. Nintendo, though? It’s just getting started.

Yup. Apart from the Cyber Punk announcement the only real winner of this year's E3 was undoubtedly Nintendo.

Full Giant Bomb Phil Spencer segment. This is an annual thing, Jeff Gerstmann does annual lengthy interviews with Phil after E3 and these are always great to see.
