Showtime's highly-anticipated Dexter revival officially casts Clancy Brown in a series regular role. Brown will play the series' main villain.

The highly-anticipated Dexter revival has cast Clancy Brown as the primary villain. From 2006 to 2013, Showtime's Dexter reigned as one of the most talked-about shows on television. The series starred Michael C. Hall as a forensic technician hiding a major secret: He's also a serial killer to preys on the very worst of humanity. Though it was well-received in the first few seasons, Dexter took a downturn in quality over the years before producing what many consider to be one of the worst series finales of all time. Dexter's finale saw the titular killer fake his death and slink off into the woods to live as a lumberjack. As a result of that tepid ending, fans have hoped Dexter could get a second chance at a better finish. Their prayers were answered last October, when news broke that Showtime is reviving Dexter for a 10-episode run, essentially giving it a season 9. Hall will be back Dexter, while original showrunner Clyde Philips will return as well. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, save for the fact that it will be set years after Dexter season 8, but now a major casting announcement has been revealed.

Per TVLine, Clancy Brown has been tapped to play Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of small town Iron Lake. Kurt will be the main antagonist in Dexter's revival and is described as someone who followed in his father's footsteps by initially driving big rigs before "now owning several trucks and the local truck stop," per the official description. Appearances are not what they seem with Kurt, as outwardly he's a "true man of the people" and is loved by all within his town. However, "should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you."

At one point, John Cusack was rumored for this role, but clearly that is no longer the case. Brown has amassed numerous well-known credits over the years, from Mr. Krabs on SpongeBob SquarePants to Captain Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption. Though he's played a wide spectrum of characters, Brown has stepped into several villainous roles, which makes him the perfect choice for Dexter's new big bad. How he crosses paths with Dexter remains to be seen, but it certainly sounds like the onetime serial killer will get on Kurt's bad side.

Over the course of its eight seasons, Dexter featured several excellent villains, with perhaps John Lithgow's Trinity Killer as the very best. Hopefully Kurt Caldwell will prove to be a worthy villain for Dexter's big return. To really make this revival count, Dexter season 9 needs to craft a compelling conflict for its main character, and that often involves an excellent antagonist. Brown might have some high expectations to live up to, but audiences are likely already excited to see him in action.

Yeah, same here. It's been surprisingly good so far.

Spoiler: show
I like how Debra's there in every episode as a figment of Dexter's imagination. Not sure where they're going with Harrison, but Dexter's potentially in deep trouble thanks to him going off the last episode.

Also, interesting to see that Angel Batista's character is still a part of the story. I wonder if he'll play a major role in uncovering Jim's true identity.

If fucking Batista is the one who causes Dexter to get caught after being completely oblivious the entire main shows run, it´ll be hilarious.

If I´m not mistaken, there´s supposed to be some flashback scenes of the Trinity Killer later in the season too. John Lithgow was confirmed to have signed onto the show.

Yeah, they're drawing parallels between the Trinity killer and...

Spoiler: show
Kurt Caldwell.

Maybe there's a flashback or vision sequence in relation to that.
