My Own Little World.
I keep myself a journal sketchbook you put your thoughts in it and no fancy artwork the whole idea of a sketchbook is to explore your concepts from observation and how you interpret them in you imagination.

In this creature design process i observe the nature for example mushrooms is what i observed and drew on my sketchbook then the subject matter came a creature living in the mushroom world.
Majority of concept artists in video games and film industry follow this footsteps it could be either digital or a traditional but the idea is always rough and big shapes.

The 1st step as you can see in black shapes are exploring shapes keepin in mind the design of the creatures and the next i did is a ideation process of a creature also doing a couple of note taking of what parts do what. As you can see i put some check marks on the exploration page meaning i'll borrow some elements and use in my creature.

The next stage is placing creature in an enviroment remember these little thumbnails are only in 5 mins meaning keeping allover compostion and big shapes also values no detail rendering otherwise it hinders your ideation and concepts keep everything at the final stage when you are done with concept stage.
