Assalamoalaikum brothers,

I have a HP Pavalion DV6 laptop. I use it with extra care. I was out of the city and kept my laptop properly packed in my house. I am using it today after 4 months. Now that I have just plugged in the laptop the battery indicator showed 1% battery power. Now its charging. I am worried that having kept the laptop idle for 4 months might have weakened the battery. Kindly inform me if such things damage the battery? This is the first time this has happened with my laptop. Kindly guide. Thanks:)

Are you sure you Shut it down properly or put it on Standby. If it was on Standby, this explains the 1% battery as it was continuously draining during this time.

Nothing to worry about though as just your battery had run out and the laptop probably shut down itself. There is no damage or risk associated with it, as far as i know.

Brother I shut it down. As I take too much care of it I re-check everything to make sure. Is there a way to find out if the battery is fine and hasn't weakened down?

I believe every laptop comes preloaded with softwares from the manufacturing company. Check if there is a battery test as well. It will see if the battery is working fine or not?

Don't batteries lose their charge over a certain period of time even if left idle?

And he used the laptop after 4 months, I'm not surprised that it drained, and that 1% must be showing up after you plugged in the charger, else it would've been a complete 0% state of battery IMO...

Secondly, it is FAR better to remove batteries from devices if they won't be used for a long period of time...

Thank you brother. I have checked the battery with HP support assistance and the result is as below:

HP Battery Check

Primary Battery: The Battery status is the indicator of how well the multiple cells for the battery are charging and discharging. An OK status indicates the battery is functioning correctly.

Status: OK - Current State Charging (74%)

So nothing to be worried about. Its fine. However, in future, if you wanted to pack it up for a long time, drain the battery completely, detach it and keep in safe custody.
