Batwoman is officially getting her own TV series at The CW, following the character's appearance in this year's annual Arrowverse television crossover event between Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The series is being developed by Caroline Dries, a writer/producer who previously worked on The CW's young Superman TV showSmallville. More recently, Dries has served as a writer/producer on the network's Melrose Place and The Vampire Diaries TV show.
The Arrowverse's head architect Greg Berlanti will executive produce the Batwoman TV series through his Berlanti Productions banner, along with his longtime collaborator Sarah Schechter. Greg Berlanti will further executive produce the DC TV series, despite having recently stepped down as DC's Chief Creative Officer. Assuming The CW enjoys the pilot episode well enough to give it a season order, Batwoman will premiere on the network in 2019.

Here is the synopsis for the Batwoman TV show (per Variety), which further confirms the character's sexuality in the small screen adaptation (UPDATE: TVLine has learned the show's producers are seeking an openly gay actress to play Batwoman. The role is open ethnicity and intended for someone aged 25-29):
In the series, Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like the plan is for the 2018 Arrowverse crossover to introduce Batwoman and quietly set the stage for her solo TV show. That way, on the off-chance that Batwoman isn't ordered to series, the door stays open for her to make future guest-starring appearances on any of the four Arrowverse TV shows. Of course, even if Dries' DC superhero series does get a full season order, there's nothing to stop Kate Kane from making a trip to Star City, Central City, or even catching a ride on The Waverider, if she feels like it.
All things considered, it will be nice to have another female superhero-led TV series on The CW, not least of all with its protagonist's comic book sexuality intact. The network has grown increasingly supportive of the LGBTQ+ community in recent years by incorporating more recurring gay or bisexual characters into DC TV shows like Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, while also introducing new ones in series like Black Lightning. Supergirl is even adding a transgender character next season, so Kate Kane will be in good company when she makes her debut later this year.
Of course, the big question now is: with San Diego Comic-Con happening this week, will The CW officially announce who's playing Batwoman during one of the Arrowverse TV show panels at the event? It's a real possibility, so be sure and stay tuned to Screen Rant for our impending coverage of the SDCC festivities.

[h=1]Batwoman TV Show May Film Next Spring, Hinting at Fall 2019 Premiere[/h]

Word has it that the Batwoman TV show will begin filming next spring, possibly hinting at a fall 2019 premiere date for the series. Fortunately, for Batwoman fans, the character will make her live-action appearance ahead of that during a crossover event for The CW's Arrowverse.
Batwoman first appeared in Detective Comics #233, where she was initially created as a love interest for Batman to counter rumors that Batman was gay. DC Comics did away with Batwoman in 1964, along with the rest of the bat family, and she didn't appear again until 2006. That new iteration of Batwoman, though, introduced the world to Kate Kane, a highly trained fighter, a Jewish lesbian with a strong sense of social justice and a woman who is not afraid to speak her mind. Although her character was both praised and criticized at the time, she remains one of the most highly rated female superheroes in DC Comics.

Now Batwoman is getting her own TV show on The CW. Geeks Worldwide reports that filming for the Batwoman TV series will begin next spring. It is likely that this means the show will premiere in fall 2019. It's still a year away, but The CW plans on introducing the character well before that. The next big Arrowverse crossover event on the network will introduce both Gotham City and Batwoman.

After The CW announced that Batwoman would appear in the crossover event, the network announced that Batwoman would get her own series, too. Caroline Dries, a former writer and producer for Smallville, will write the script for the show's pilot episode, with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter serving as executive producers. The Arrowverse crossover event will serve as a set-up for the character and her subsequent series.

As of yet, there is no word about who will portray Batwoman for the Arrowverse crossover and her solo TV series, but reports suggest that The CW wants to cast an openly gay actressin the role. The Arrowverse already has a good record with strong LGBTQ+ characters, with many in leading roles on DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Black Lightning. The fourth season of Supergirl will also introduce the first transgender superhero to television.
With filming on Batwoman not set to begin until early next year, the wait for the TV show is still a long one. Fortunately, The CW will let fans get a good look at the character before that. The network has a good track record with its DC television shows, so fans can rest assured that Batwoman is in good hands.

[h=1]Ruby Rose Cast as Batwoman in the CW Arrowverse[/h]

The CW reveals Ruby Rose will play Kate Kane aka. Batwoman in the Arrowverse; she'll first be introduced in this winter's crossover event. The network has been expanding its lineup of superhero shows ever since Arrow launched The Flash as a spinoff series. Since then, the roster has grown to include Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, with all four shows taking place in the same multiverse. Further, Black Lightning joined the network, but that series' exact connection to the other shows has not yet been confirmed.
Recently, it was reported The CW is developing a Batwoman TV series that will likely premiere Fall 2019. But first, Kate Kane will appear in the Arrowverse later this year as part of the annual crossover event. Batwoman joins the 2018 Arrowverse crossover that will include characters from Arrow, Supergirl and The Flash, but not Legends of Tomorrow. Since Black Lightning has largely remained separate from its fellow CW DC shows, its superheroes also aren't expected to take part in the crossover event as of now. While little else is known about this year's DCTV crossover, we do know it will see the superheroes heading to Gotham City where they'll meet Batwoman. And now, the actress playing the new superhero has been announced.

Variety reports Ruby Rose has joined the Arrowverse as Kate Kane aka. Batwoman. She'll first step into the role for this year's crossover before starring in the Batwoman TV show that's in development. The solo TV series will see Caroline Dries serve as writer and executive producer, while Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti will additionally executive produce with Sarah Schechter. DC's Geoff Johns will also executive produce the Kate Kane show.

Rose, for her part, has a varied career that spans modeling, DJing and acting. The actress rose to popularity for her role in season 3 of Netflix's original TV series Orange is the New Black, but has since co-starred in a number of action films, including xXx: Return of Xander Cage, John Wick: Chapter Two, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. She also lent both her musical and acting talents to Pitch Perfect 3. Now, Rose joins The CW's Arrowverse as Batwoman.

Shortly after the Batwoman TV series was announced, it was reported the show's creators were looking for an
out actress to play Kate Kane, who is a lesbian. The show has fulfilled that promise to fans by casting Rose, who has been out as a lesbian for some time; she also identifies as gender-fluid. Considering The CW series aimed to cast a lesbian actress for the role, it seems incredibly likely the show will not shy away from that aspect of Kane's identity. But, since it's a CW superhero show, the Batwoman solo series will also depict Kate Kane's street-fighting abilities as she battles to make Gotham City a safer place. And, given Rose's experience with action films, she has proved capable of taking on a superhero role.

The CW has a good track record of casting its TV superheroes, and fans are no doubt looking forward to seeing the latest caped crusader don a suit and join the action. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait until the Arrowverse crossover late this year before Rose suits up as Batwoman - though a first look photo will likely be revealed ahead of time. And the wait will be even longer for the
Batwoman solo series to launch, with a Fall 2019 premiere date the most likely. Until then, at least fans now know who will be playing Kate Kane and they can look forward to the upcoming Batwoman TV Show.

[h=1]Batwoman Actress Ruby Rose Leaves Twitter Following Fan Backlash[/h]
Just days after being cast as Batwoman in the Arrowverse, Ruby Rose leaves social media amid fan backlash. Last month, it was revealed that The CW was developing a new spinoff series centered on Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, an iconic superhero from Batman's corner of the DC Universe. While it wasn't surprising that the network was considering another DC Comics-related TV show, especially considering that they already air six of them, what was surprising was the character they chose to pursue.
The Arrowverse has subtly and not-so-subtly referenced Batman and his supporting characters in Gotham City for quite some time now, but finally choosing to dive into that corner of DC Comics is an interesting move. What's more, the fact that they're willing to further diversify by giving a homosexual superhero her own series is impressive, which is why The CW was looking to cast an openly gay actress in the role. After some time, the network found the perfect person for the part: Ruby Rose. But, apparently, not everyone agrees with the choice.

FandomWire points out that - due to backlash and general negative criticism about Rose's casting, ranging from her supposed lack of acting skills to her being the considered the wrong queer actress to play Batwoman - Rose has deleted her Twitter account. While she hasn't also abandoned Instagram yet, it appears that she's limiting comments only to people she follows, such as family and friends. Although Twitter has similar options for direct messages, the platform fundamentally operates differently and it's significantly more difficult to avoid abhorrent criticisms from fans.

This news comes on the heels of Rose discussing her part for the first time only a couple of days ago, expressing overwhelming joy and
enthusiasm for being cast as Batwoman. Unfortunately, actors and actresses leaving social media due to backlash and bullying, mainly from certain sections of fandoms that oppose their casting (or disagree with their characters), is a rather common occurrence nowadays. In recent months, Stranger Things'Millie Bobby Brown deleted her Twitter account after becoming a homophobic meme andStar Wars: The Last Jedi's Kelly Marie Tran erased her Instagram account due to nonstop bullying. Last year, Finn Jones deleted his Twitter account temporarily after arguing with Iron Fist fans on whether or not Danny Rand should be played by a white actor.

While each of the aforementioned actors and actresses left social media for different reasons, they were all personally attacked for their roles, which is something that should be stopped - or, at the very least, curtailed - on social media. Thankfully, it doesn't seem like Rose plans on exiting the role anytime soon. She's scheduled to make her debut as Batwoman in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover event before potentially headlining her own
Batwoman TV series on The CW sometime in the near future.

[h=1]Batwoman: Rachel Skarsten Cast As Lead Villain Alice[/h]

Ruby Rose's Batwoman TV series casts Rachel Skarsten as the main villain, Alice. The CW has become the go-to destination for DC content on the small screen with the creation of the Arrowverse. This interconnected universe of DC properties crossed over last year to bring characters from Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl together. Their journey took them to Gotham City and brought about the introduction of Kate Kane (aka Batwoman).
Batwoman is the protector of Gotham in her universe, and fans of the Arrowverse responded very positively to her debut. This is exactly what The CW had been hoping for as plans to film a pilot for a solo Batwoman series were already in the works. It was earlier this year that The CW gave Batwoman an official pilot order, giving writer Caroline Dries and director David Nutter the opportunity to show why a full series order is needed. The pilot has been casting up recently ahead of filming beginning and they've now got the main villain role locked down.

According to Deadline, Rachel Skarsten has been been cast in the lead villain role of Alice for Batwoman. Skarsten most recently had stints on Imposters andReign, but also starred as Dinah Lance in the old Birds of Prey TV series, so this will not be Skarsten's first DC role. She is the latest addition to Rose's supporting cast and joins Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox (aka Batwing), Nicole Kang as Kane's step-sister Mary Hamilton, and Meagan Tandy as Kane's girlfriend Sophie Moore.

Alice is the leader of the Wonderland Gang, who get their name from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland books - just like their fearless leader. She typically speaks in phrases and quotes from the novels too. For the purposes of Batwoman, the report of Skarsten's addition describes Alice's personality as unpredictable, with swings between "maniacal and charming." Her life mission is said to be undermining Gotham's sense of security, which will put her in Batwoman's crosshairs.

However, the comic version of Alice can be taken a step further and could signal a major story point for Batwoman if it is adapted this way. It was eventually revealed that Alice's real name is Beth Kane, making her not only Kane's sister, but her twin; and she would eventually go on to become a more heroic figure as Red Alice. It will take far more than the pilot of Batwoman for such a story to unfold, so those hoping to see this saga play out will have to hope the pilot convinces The CW to green light more episodes.

[h=1]Supergirl Will Reportedly Appear In Batwoman Season 1[/h]

The CW's
Supergirl star Melissa Benoist will reportedly appear in Batwomanseason 1, the upcoming Arrowverse DC TV show starring Ruby Rose. Though the Arrowverse initially began with Arrow back in 2012, the shared superhero universe has grown a great deal to include shows like The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. Supergirl originally aired on CBS before moving over to The CW and, as a result, Kara Danvers (Benoist) lives on a different Earth in the multiverse. Then, last year's Arrowverse crossover introduced Kate Kane (Rose), who resides in Gotham on Earth-1 - the same Earth on which Arrowand The Flash are set.

Supergirl and Batwoman met during the Elseworlds crossover, as the latter helped the former and her superhero friends track down the reason for Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) waking up in Oliver Queen's (Stephen Amell) life and vice versa. With the solo
Batwoman TV show premiering this fall, the superhero will officially join The CW's lineup of DC TV shows, and will then participate in the next major crossover event: Crisis on Infinite Earths. This year's Arrowverse crossover is expected to shakeup the franchise as we know it, but it appears there will be a much more minor crossover to look forward to as well.

Now, FandomWire is reporting that Supergirl will appear on Batwoman at some point during the latter's season 1. The publication speculates it will occur prior to Crisis on Infinite Earths and help connect their respective TV shows ahead of the crossover. Neither The CW nor anyone involved in either series have yet to confirm the report, but FandomWire did break the news of Black Lightning appearing in Crisis on Infinite Earths, with series star Cress Williams confirming the long-separate DC TV show as part of the Arrowverse.

With the Batwoman pilot set before the Arrowverse Elseworlds crossover, the TV show will have to catch up to the rest of the universe before Crisis on Infinite Earths. There's no doubt a time jump will be involved, though it's unclear how early in season 1 that will occur. A minor crossover with Supergirlcould also help bridge the gap between Batwoman's pilot and Crisis on Infinite Earths, which will air across five hours of TV starting in December. Plus, given how much chemistry there was between Benoist and Rose in the Elseworlds crossover, fans are no doubt eager to see the two reunite - and if it occurs before all the Arrowverse superheroes unite for Crisis, then that's even better.

Of course, it remains to be seen if this
Supergirl and Batwomancrossover actually happens, and if it does before Crisis kicks off. Until set photos appear or The CW confirms the crossover, fans should take this report with a little grain of salt. It does sound likely, since The CW's Arrowverse shows have been known to feature smaller crossovers outside each annual event. And FandomWire did correctly report Black Lightning will be in Crisis, but fans should still temper their expectations just in case. Though it would be great to see Supergirl and Batwoman team up for their own Arrowverse crossover, fans can at least rest assured knowing the superheroines will unite in Crisis on Infinite Earths when that kicks off in December.

Batwoman season 1 premieres Sunday, October 6 at 8pm ET on The CW, followed by the Supergirl season 5 premiere at 9pm.
