Aquaman 2 is officially in development at Warner Bros. and DC Films, butAquaman director James Wan reportedly won't sign on to return until he sees a great script. The latest DC Comics cinematic universe - unofficially called the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) - movie was Wan's aquatic adventure followingJason Momoa's Arthur Curry. Though the superhero was first introduced inBatman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and returned for Justice League,Aquaman was the character's true origin story. By the end of the film, Arthur had become the King of Atlantis and donned the classic Aquaman comic book costume, complete with King Atlan's Trident.

Reviews of Aquaman have been relatively mixed-to-positive; it was by no means as ravaged by critics as Batman V Superman or Suicide Squad in 2016. Further, Aquaman became the first DCEU movie to earn $1 billion at the global box office, making it a resounding success for Warner Bros. and DC Films. As such, it should come as no surprise that Warner Bros. has already been discussing Aquaman 2, though Wan isn't signed on to direct the sequeljust yet. Now, a new update on the Aquaman sequel is revealed.

Deadline is reporting that an Aquaman sequel is officially in development at Warner Bros. and DC Films. The report further states the studio is currently "courting" Wan to return and it looks likely he will in fact be back in the director's chair on a sequel because he's invested in the character and underwater world. As for Wan, the director's representatives say he is taking a break after all the work he put into the first film, but sources tell Deadline the helmer won't sign on to return for Aquaman 2 unless he sees a good script.

Considering the success of Aquaman - it's the first DC movie since Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Rises to pass the $1 billion benchmark - it makes sense for Warner Bros. to put a sequel into development. After all,
Justice Leaguetest audiences ranked Momoa's Aquaman as one of their favorite superheroes coming out of the team-up film. Wonder Woman, the highest ranked by test audiences, already has a sequel in production, with Wonder Woman 1984hitting theaters in June 2020. With Warner Bros. putting Aquaman 2 into development, it's clear the studio is focusing on the strengths of their DC universe, particularly Wonder Woman and Aquaman.

It still remains to be seen if Wan officially signs on to direct Aquaman 2, and who will pen the script. The first film featured a story by Wan, DC's Geoff Johns and Will Beall, with Beall and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick writing the script itself. It's unclear if Beall or Johnson-McGoldrick will return. So, while fans may be excited that Warner Bros. is looking to continue the story of Momoa's superhero, there's still plenty we don't know yet about the sequel. However, as development continues, expect more updates about Aquaman 2.

[h=1]Aquaman 2 Gets December 2022 Release Date[/h]

Warner Bros. sets an official Aquaman 2 release date in December 2022, confirming the Aquaman sequel will debut four years after the first film. Jason Momoa debuted as Arthur Curry in Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, but the appearance was little more than a glorified cameo. Then, Momoa reprised the role for Snyder's Justice League in 2017, where he became a fan-favorite as a new take on the aquatic superhero. But it wasn't until James Wan's Aquaman hit theaters in late 2018 that fans really got to see Momoa's version of the superhero.
Wan and Momoa's solo DC movie was a verifiable hit, with Aquaman reviewsranging from mixed to positive - though they were undoubtedly more positive than reactions to Batman V Superman and Justice League. Further, Aquamangrossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, surpassing all other Worlds of DC films in the process. As a result, it came as no surprise when it was reported that Warner Bros. was already developing Aquaman 2, with Momoa set to return as Arthur Curry. Wan has not yet signed on to direct, but the sequel now has a release date.

THR's Borys Kit is reporting that Warner Bros. has set Aquaman 2 to hit theaters on Dec. 16, 2022, which will mark almost exactly four years afterAquaman swam into theaters in 2018. Aquaman's Wan and Peter Safran will produce Aquaman 2, which is currently being scripted by the first film's co-writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. He wrote the script for Aquaman with Will Beall.

In addition to Aquaman 2, Warner Bros. is looking to expand the underwater world of the aquatic superhero by developing an Aquaman spinoff, The Trench, which is said to be a horror-tinged movie based on the titular realm. The Trench is one of Aquaman's Seven Kingdoms, which additionally include Arthur's home of Atlantis, Mera's (Amber Heard) kingdom of Xebel, the Fishermen, the Brine and the extinct Deserters. Considering the vast underwater world introduced in Aquaman, there's plenty of ground (or, water) to cover in both a sequel and spinoff. At this time, it's unclear if any other spinoffs are being considered by Warner Bros. and DC Films.

Still, given the success of Aquaman, fans are perhaps more excited forAquaman 2, which will put Momoa's superhero back in the forefront. Since the first film was his official origin story, in which he acquired both King Atlan's Trident and his classic comic book costume, Aquaman 2 offers the filmmakers a chance to give the fully realized superhero a chance to shine. Though we don't know what the exact story of the sequel will be, the Aquaman credits scene sets up Black Manta to be a major antagonist to Arthur Curry after being introduced in the first film.
With that said, Aquaman 2 is still in the very early stages of development, with the script currently in progress. And with Aquaman 2 not hitting theaters until late 2022, Warner Bros. has plenty of time to make sure the sequel comes together in a way that will please fans of the first film. Whether that means getting Wan back on board to direct, or bringing in someone new, remains to be seen, but hiring a director may be Warner Bros. next step in developingAquaman 2 - so fans should keep their eyes peeled for more news.

Patrick Wilson Returning As Ocean Master For Aquaman 2 Confirmed

During the Aquaman 2 panel at DC FanDome, Patrick Wilson confirmed he will return as King Orm in the James Wan directed sequel.

Patrick Wilson is all set to reprise his role as the Ocean Master Orm Marius in James Wan's Aquaman 2. The first film, alluded to as one of the highest-grossing films based on a DC character, chronicled the story of its titular hero as he set out to rescue the underwater kingdom of Atlantis from the clutches of his power-hungry half brother King Orm. The original Aquaman starred Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, and Dolph Abuses will lead to bangren in its lead cast.

Announced back in 2019, Aquaman 2 is touted to be a horror-tinged extension of Aquaman. James Wan, who has notably helmed hit horror films like The Conjuring and Insidious, has used some of his horror roots into the upcoming movie to allow for its formidable underwater visuals to stand out. Aquaman 2 is also going to be reportedly larger than its earlier counterpart, and it will manifest a Silver Age story vibe once it's out in the cinemas. Fans have gotten only a few updates on Aquaman 2 beyond this, but now fans have gotten a casting announcement.

During the Aquaman 2 panel at DC FanDome, Patrick Wilson confirmed that he would stage a comeback in the 2022 movie. Patrick did this subtly while talking about the challenges he faced while preparing for the role of King Orm. The actor, however, did not go into detail about how his character would be incorporated into the new story. Wilson also made a reference to his fate at the end of Aquaman during the panel by jokingly asking if he would be in seaweed handcuffs for the entire film.

Aquaman ended with Momoa's Arthur defeating Wilson's Orm in a duel. While Arthur spared Orm's life, the villain was eventually hauled away to a prison beneath the waves. When Wilson reflected on the possible return of his character in Aquaman 2 last year, he mentioned that he was unlikely to be a main villain in the new story if he even returned. Wilson stated that the scope of his character was up to James Wan, although he would be happy to be back if the director called for him.

While it is now known that Patrick Wilson will return as King Orm in Aquaman 2, it remains to be seen who he will align with. Aquaman's post-credits scene and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's subsequent confirmation about his return as Black Manta indicate that the vengeful mercenary will have a more significant role in the new film. But it's unlikely that the Atlantean Orm will team up with a human, a species he clearly despises. That being said, Orm accepted his fate after finding out that Arthur rescued their mother, Atlanna, so there could be room for redemption for the once fearsome supervillain in Aquaman 2.
