Personally I think 1440P with g sync 144Hz or even 120Hz if it's available is better than 4k hands down because then you will not have to compromise on low settings and FPS.
4k will only be better if you are into razor sharp displays and Movies/TV. A 1080p video will not loose information (and pretty much quality too) when getting upscaled to 4k, but 1080p on 1440p will loose some information. On the other hand you will not have any scaling issues on 1440p that you will possibly have with 4k.

TL;DR
If gaming is your preference over watching videos = 1440P Gsync
If vice versa = 4k
Dead simple.

I'll prefer 4K in the long run, recently coming off from 144hz, all i can say is it's only day and night if you play games like csgo or r6 but again the day and night different disappears as you get used to it.
hey afeef. long time. i still remember when we used to have cod matches together. u r right as well thts wt i thought in start and was confused

But was yours 1440p? and IPS? There is a BIG difference.

If you get confused than check: (from top QHD section)

2nd link (I think this is the only one that has everything you need, literally. But double check the reviews and ignore amazon reviews on this item because people have given it low score as a result of their own mistakes, like they buy the $420 freesync variant which is TN while they thought it was IPS, however gsync one is IPS too)

3rd link (this is one of the most color accurate monitors on planet and highest rated also however it lacks goodies like more refresh rate and other)

4th link (a very very nice monitor, only downside is that it is freesync instead of gsync)

Yea bro, good days, these days im hooked upto pubg, i bought 144hz monitor for CSGO thinking my game would improve but truth to be told, i was still the same rank as i was on 60hz(LEM). @rafay22 Mine was 1080p with TN panel but like i said the games like csgo/r6, they don't require graphics, for them refresh rate matters as it gives a slight edge over other players, many csgo players game at 4:3 resolution as it gives them better viewing angle.

1440p 144hz is viable only if your card can sustain stable 144 frames.

He has a gtx1080, it is capable enough for 1440p at 100+Hz and if it comes with gsync then he doesn't even need to hit max refresh rate.

So what exactly is the purpose of Gsync in less tech terms ?

Im thinking of getting a 1440p then as i already got a 4K tv with me . but dont know might get my hands on another 4K display as future proof thingy keeps coming to mind . but lets see

Have you ever experienced "tearing"?

think it happens when the fps reaches more then the screen hertz if not wrong. yes i have but hardly it bothered me

Yes or less, it bothers many people including me also. These "sync" technologies try to eliminate that tearing.
Vsync = No hardware required but only functions when fps go beyond screen refresh rate, when they go low, it Abuses will lead to bans up and stutters horribly.
FreeSync = AMD technology, cheaper than gsync, functions in a certain limit (specified on monitors technical details) for example 75-120Hz, requires amd card and freesync monitor.
Gsync = NVIDIA's technology, expensive, requires nvidia gpu, functions pretty much same as freesync. (sometimes gsync range is wider than freesync's one)
