What does ‘exclusive’ really mean?

Halo Infinite

Microsoft’s next-generation console, the Xbox Series X, will launch sometime this holiday season. Unlike the PlayStation 5, which has several exclusive titles, Microsoft will be taking much less of a hard-line approach to the generational switch-over.

For example, Microsoft’s tentpole title Halo Infinite will be released on both the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X. Thanks to Microsoft’s new “Smart Delivery” system, if you buy Halo Infinite on the Xbox One, you don’t need to rebuy it on the Series X — you’ll already have it. Ownership of games with Smart Delivery will be tied to your Microsoft account, and will apply across platforms. Backward compatibility matters a lot to the Microsoft team, and now apparently so does frontward compatibility.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about the Xbox Series X, from its release date to its price. There’s also a lot we don’t know about the new console’s slate of games, such as which ones will support Smart Delivery (although we’ve noted below in the cases where it’s been announced), and which games will look and feel so stunning on the Xbox Series X that they’ll make it worth the upgrade from Xbox One. We’ll just have to wait and see if Microsoft’s super-casual approach to this next generation pays off.

The list below includes all of the Xbox Series X games that we know about so far. We’ll keep it updated.

XBOX SERIES X (AND PC) EXCLUSIVES
This first list of games is exclusive to the Xbox Series X as well as Windows PC, as is typical for Microsoft-published titles. (Paradise Lost and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will also be available on Steam.)

It’s not yet clear which of these games will be available on the Xbox One as well, which has been a point of contention as well as confusion. For example, Avowed and Everwild have been described as Xbox One titles in the past, but that has since changed.

It seems likely that some of these games will also be released on Xbox One, but we do know that not all of them will be. Scorn’s director, for example, has stated that the game will be next-gen-only.

  • As Dusk Falls
  • Avowed
  • Everwild
  • Fable
  • Forza Motorsport
  • The Gunk
  • The Medium
  • Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis
  • Scorn
  • Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2
  • STALKER 2
  • State of Decay 3
  • Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
This next chunk of games will launch on the Xbox Series X as well as the Xbox One and Windows PC. Although these games will work on the previous generation’s hardware, they’ll be “exclusive” to Xbox and Windows ... except that Halo Infinite and Second Extinction: Reclaim Earth will also be sold on Steam.

  • The Ascent (Smart Delivery)
  • Call of the Sea (Smart Delivery)
  • CrossfireX
  • Echo Generation
  • ExoMecha
  • Halo Infinite (Smart Delivery)
  • Hello Neighbor 2
  • Second Extinction: Reclaim Earth
  • Tell Me Why
  • Tetris Effect: Connected
XBOX SERIES X MULTIPLATFORM GAMES
Multiplatform publishers like Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Capcom, and Square Enix are bringing new games to the Xbox Series X. Games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, and Marvel’s Avengers will come to the Xbox One as well as the Xbox Series X; the first two of those games will even have Smart Delivery. Some multiplatform titles — Resident Evil Village, for example — will be next-gen-only.

This list includes games slated to come out in November or later, in an attempt to demarcate when Microsoft’s “next generation” will begin.

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Smart Delivery)
  • Balan Wonderworld
  • Bright Memory: Infinite
  • Chorus (Smart Delivery)
  • Cyberpunk 2077 (Smart Delivery)
  • Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition
  • Dying Light 2
  • Dustborn
  • Far Cry 6
  • Gods and Monsters
  • Gothic
  • Hitman 3
  • The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
  • Metal: Hellsinger (Smart Delivery)
  • Orphan of the Machine
  • The Outer Worlds / The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon
  • Outriders
  • Paradise Lost
  • Pragmata
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Recompile
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Scarlet Nexus (Smart Delivery)
  • Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One
  • Solar Ash
  • Starfield
  • Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 (Smart Delivery)
  • Vampire: The Masquerade — Swansong
  • Werewolf: The Apocalypse — Earthblood
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Smart Delivery)
XBOX ONE GAMES GETTING XBOX SERIES X UPGRADES
In addition to the above multiplatform games, many live-service and existing games will make the transition from the current generation to the next one. That includes games like Control and Observer, which will get next-gen upgrades. Venerable multiplayer online games like Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite (which is on everything), and Destiny 2 will be available on the Xbox Series X.

Players who already own Gears 5 will be pleased to see that, thanks to Smart Delivery, they’ll be able to play an updated version of the game on Xbox Series X without paying another cent. Dirt 5 publisher Codemasters has also announced Smart Delivery support.

  • Chivalry 2
  • Control
  • Cris Tales
  • Demon Turf
  • Destiny 2
  • Dirt 5 (Smart Delivery)
  • FIFA 21
  • Fortnite
  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Gears 5 (Smart Delivery)

If you can play Xbox games on PC, why does Xbox exist? Is it just a convenience for those who are used to consoles? From what it looks like to me, Microsoft is selling the PS5 and PC.

MS are selling Game Pass and getting more emails signed up, similar to what Epic is doing with EGS. Get more people in the ecosystem.

They would also like to probably get people to buy the Xbox they spent billions researching, but nothing they have shown so far has made me (and seemingly a lot of people) interested in getting a new Xbox.

But you do still want to play those games, so....looks like you're still choosing one of the options MS is giving you at the end of the day.

Yeah it's one of the options they've given alright, but we're in the Xbox Series X topic, and nothing so far has inspired a lot of confidence into getting their brand spanking new console.

At this rate I won't be surprised if by the end of this generation MS completely transitions into a 'services' provider and doesn't even opt making a new console hardware.

Turning console first gamers into purchasing one of the other options as a means to play their games means they had compelling content people don't wana miss. If you feel bad inside for the Xbox brand there's nothing stopping you from buying Series X still. (But you gotta give up piracy for that lol)

Yes, if they manage to make Necro come in an Xbox topic to praise MS, they certainly did something right :p

The only time they have compelling releases once a year (eg Gears 5), it's very easy to get a free code for a month and play the game that way. I've been doing that :p. At least with methods like this they don't have to make pres releases about how well their games did, because we can all infer their unit sales wouldn't touch anything on the competition.

But, again, we're talking about the Game Pass service, not the Xbox console. They are in the market to sell 'the most powerful console' at the time of it's launch, and it doesn't look like there are any/many reasons to buy one.

Is baat se to ap agree karien gey na before going on the next unrelated tangent ? :p

And you invested in a more expensive system than your console to play the said game. I don't see how MS giving you the option to play on either a console or PC is a negative for you?

On one hand you say MS didn't show you a good enough reason to buy a Series X. On the other hand you would, once again, transition to a PC to play all those games, when you already have the option to play them on the Series X too.

So these are good enough reasons to invest in a PC, but not in Series X? Does not add up :p

No one anywhere said it was a 'negative', they're just doing a piss poor job of selling people on an Xbox Series X. You don't really have to be a contrarian to that thought process, a lot of people, including journalists, are echoing the same thing.

eg: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-07-24-microsoft-still-hasnt-made-the-case-for-xbox-series-x

This is ironic coming from a primarily PC gamer who is also praising Game Pass while having absolutely no interest in buying the new Xbox.

When you buy your own Series X, you'll get the answer to your question :p

^ Okay, I read all that and still have no idea why the Xbox exists. In fact, it seems like MS wants people to eventually move onto their cloud services, which means that even Windows and a gaming PC would be just as useless as Xbox since you can stream games on Mac (unless they don't allow this). Is the new Xbox just a transition phase for console players who are into MS games before MS completely drops the idea of a console? On PC you can play the best version of a game and also games that may not be available elsewhere, so I can still see why someone would opt for a PC. But there's not a single reason to get an Xbox right now (except that you want to play MS stuff on console). On the other hand, it's clear why PS5 is worth getting (great exclusives as usual). MS might be making a lot of profits and new customers on Game Pass and other services, but it seems to me that they are indirectly selling the PS5 by not offering anything exclusive on their console (but releasing the console anyway). The console player is forced to pick the PS5 (excluding Nintendo of course).

No one anywhere said it was a negative, your uncanny habit of deliberately misconstruing others posts never ceases to amaze :p
But its not a difficult idea that you cannot grasp yet that they are giving you the option to play where you want. Why does it matter to you how many boxes they sell if you're getting the better deal as a consumer? :p

This is ironic coming from a primarily PC gamer who is also praising Game Pass while having absolutely no interest in buying the new Xbox.
And I think MS is completely OK with that. So again, what is YOUR complaint here?

You're actually making the case of "consoles are not worth it if every game is on PC" because you have fully transitioned to PC gaming (a 180 deg turn of its own just like MS :p)

Pretty much what I said, MS is transitioning into a "services" provider for games, but necrokiller gonna necrokiller and post the opposite of what we say :p

None of the games they announced are Xbox console only, all their games are on Series X and PC (and PS5 if it's a third party game).

Sony is taking the classic "if you want to play this game, the PS5 is the only place you can play it", the approach which actually sells consoles.

What is even the point of this comment lol, we are in an Xbox topic talking about how there is little point to buying an Xbox console and how MS hasn't made a good enough case for it at all.

I don't know why you're continuing down this line of thought necro, lol.

Me, and others, are making the case for why an Xbox is not worth it since every game is on PC.

You can't say the same about the PS5 no matter how hard you try to pivot :p

Shouldn't there be at least some exclusive content on Xbox if they are making an Xbox, presumably to sell it? If they are transitioning to services only and offer nothing special on different platforms, then do away with the console already. I was expecting that MS will enter into a competition with Sony this gen with their new console and hopefully exclusives, but lol.

Yeah, I meant if someone wants to play MS games on a console even if they are available elsewhere. Why anyone would want to do that, idk. :p One reason could be that a gaming PC of Xbox Series X level performance would probably be expensive than the console and someone who is used to consoles might want to go for that option.

All of this is based on the assumption that every console gamer in existence will adopt PC gaming with no hesitation. That's not the case.

If the eventual goal is to eliminate hardware then the transition will take time. xCloud is laying the foundation for cloud based subscription gaming that will only improve with time in terms of accessibility across the globe.

If Series X was pirated like Xbox 360 Chandoo here would probably choose that over a PC first :p

I agree. Console gamers may not adopt PC gaming but given the choice between XBSX and PS5, which is what MS did by making XBSX, it seems that most will go for PS5 for obvious reasons. Why give this poor choice by pitting your console against PS5 and then offering nothing special on it? If there was no XBSX, gamers would have had to go for a PC if they wanted to play games other than what is available on PS5 - the same way they have to go for a PS5 if they want to play its exclusives, regardless of whether they own a PC, XBSX and MS game services. What I'm saying is that the XBSX seems redundant in all this.

To put this in perspective, the anticipation for the next-gen consoles was predicated, at least in part, on the fact that MS has acquired some good studios and that they would now come up with a good line of Xbox exclusives to give a real fight to Sony in the coming generation. We already knew that there would be no point to a new Xbox if it doesn't come with exclusives. So that's where I find it odd for MS to come up with XBSX and then say that you can play its games on PC. That may be good in itself but there's no console competition and PS5 'wins' by default.

You won't be able to play games like Avowed, Fable, Forza, Halo, Everwild, Hellblade 2 etc on PS5. But MS is giving you the choice between Xbox, PC and xCloud.

What I'm saying is that the XBSX seems redundant in all this.
It would seem redundant to anyone who is open to the idea of gaming on PC. Microsoft has shifted its strategy to services rather than solely focusing on hardware. This has been known for a while now.

But Microsoft's Spencer says he doesn't consider Sony and Nintendo his main competition anymore, largely because neither of those Japanese companies owns its own top-end global cloud infrastructure akin to Microsoft's Azure platform. One of Microsoft's main selling points for the new Xbox will be integration with its xCloud technology, which is meant to allow you to play the same game across a console, a desktop PC and a mobile device.

"When you talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have a ton of respect for them, but we see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward," Spencer said. "That's not to disrespect Nintendo and Sony, but the traditional gaming companies are somewhat out of position. I guess they could try to re-create Azure, but we've invested tens of billions of dollars in cloud over the years."

Microsoft putting games on PC and Game Pass is hurting them in the long run, thanks to lower Xbox Live Gold and hardware revenue. This does the end user no favors either, as Xbox first-party games are also embracing the service-like business model to justify their cost of development.

Halo Infinite is dubbed as a 'platform', and the game will see on-going development over the course of 10 years. Sea of Thieves, despite 'absolutely nailing its most essential component' continues to feel like an unfinished games that may someday reach the intended vision via a regular stream of updates. It's pretty clear that Xbox first-party games will be feature deprived and potentially content starved at launch, and their development will remain on-going for years.

On the other hand, Playstation first-party studios will deliver full releases just as they've done in the past, as their goal is not to build user engagement via service-driven tactics. The average console gamer is far more in favor of Sony's approach, and Playstation hardware and software dollar sales figures will speak for themselves, while Xbox execs will continue to talk about number of active users.

I think it's kinda obvious MS realizes they can't stand 1 : 1 against Sony or Nintendo in a strictly console realm whether it be in hardware sales or lineup in system-selling software, which is why they are focusing more elsewhere and broadening more into the expanding PC gaming market, something which a lot of critics have lambasted them for ignoring for so long.

There's nothing really wrong with that but ultimately as I've said so many times before, it leaves little reason to actually want an Xbox console at this point. And this is coming from someone who still believes the 360 is one of the best consoles of my lifetime.
