My cousin wants to build a Ryzen PC for gaming. Stupid idea?

First thing first, his budget is just 20-22k and currently, he's an old i5-650 (1st Gen.) with an Intel DH55TC mobo and 8 Gigs of RAM.

He has casing, PSU (550W), HDD, SSD, fans, GPU (RX470), everything. All he needs is a motherboard, RAM and of course, the CPU.

He wants a Ryzen 5 1400 (quad-core, 8 threads) CPU that goes for $55 on AliExpress. It'll cost him roughly 9,000 rupees after including shipping charges and VISA transaction fees. As for mobo, he wants a basic AMD A320 chipset board, which we are unable to find anywhere in Lahore thus far. Lastly, he wants to pair it with 2x4 Gigs of RAM, which usually goes for around 6,000.

Whereas I think he's better off upgrading his i5-650 with an i7-870 (~4,000 at Hafeez Center). i7-870, despite its age, can easily handle the likes of GTX1060 6GB, FYI.

Another option is a 4th Gen. i5 system such as the i5-4570 (11k), combined with an H81 board (2,500). Sure, the processor is expensive but he can use his existing DDR3 RAM with it, hence it'll be MUCH cheaper.

Which option, do you think, is best for him?

There are some xeon chipsets(xeon x3470) that will give him the best bang for the buck & will fit in his current mobo. If he wants to go for the ryzen then he should buy locally, he'll only have to pay 2-3k extra. There's too much of a hassle importing from aliexpress & way too big of a risk.
4th gen isn't that good anyways. They are expensive for the level of performance they provide.

x3470 is core2duo architecture. 4th gen i.e. haswell is far better than that.

you've probably made your decision by now so do tell us what you went with.

We went with neither Xeon, nor 1st Gen. i7 or 4th Gen. i5 or Ryzen! We went with an i5-2500K with a Z68 mobo!

We ordered the CPU from AliExpress as locally even 2300 (vanilla) are going for 5,000 - 6,000 whereas the 2500K cost us mere Rs.5,500/- with registered shipping (We tracked it all the way from China to the doorstep) and taxes! It's one hell of a CPU, given its price-tag. Arrived at about a week ago at the doorstep in mint condition, and we didn't have to pay a cent in terms of custom duty. Now we are looking for a good, cheap, used cooler with dual-fans to overclock it to ~4GHz. Right now it's running at 3.5GHz at stock voltages.

The mobo cost us 4,500 rupees (locally). The man at the shop was asking 5,500 for it but came down to 4.5K after good bit of negotiation. Not sure if it's a good price or not.

That pretty much sums it all up.

Congrats buddy! So AliExpress is safe for buying processor with paid shipping? Might give it a go in the future

You'll be 101% fine, as long as you order via "China Post Registered Airmail" or "AliExpress Standard Shipping". All these packages are delivered with an international tracking number and you can track them on Pakistan Post's website.

Don't use "Ordinary small packet" or any other shipping method and request the seller to declare the package as a "Gift" and mention its price at <$10 and you'll be fine. CPUs are so small and lightweight, they easily slip under customs radar, especially if the declared value is around $5-$10. They don't even blink at such small parcels twice!

Understandably, I won't recommend ordering motherboards and GPUs. In fact, mobos and GPUs actually cost less locally! H61 Micro ATX boards go for 4,000 PKR on AliExpress. Locally, you can find them for just 2,200!

Bro i5-2500k is extremely outdated CPU!! 95~100W TDP at base clocks... Performance can only be achieved if its Overclocked. Also its IPC performance is very outdated.. its not at all for the current generation gaming..
