*facepalm* at the bolded ones. How can the academy even allow this. Oh well, that means GDC awards are the only ones I'll hold in high esteem.
Isn't that the case annually though ? panelists include members from various studios and teams. Not sure why it's such an issue this year in particular :p

They do and that's a good thing, but studios that worked on titles in the running for GotY should definitely be excluded imo. Imagine having the directors and actors from nominees in the best motion picture category as part of the Oscar judges panel :p

God of War wins Game of the Year at Game Developers Choice Awards

Beats out Red Dead Redemption 2, which had seven nominations

The 19th annual Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony was held Wednesday night at the 2019 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Sony Santa Monica’s God of Wartook home the coveted Game of the Year prize. It beat out Red Dead Redemption 2, which received the most nominations this year, as well as Marvel’s Spider Man, Return of the Obra Dinn, and Celeste.
This year’s nominees were announced in January. The slate is chosen each year by video game developers from around the world. The full list of winners is included below.
Each year during GDC, the Game Developers Choice Awards also takes time to honor notable figures in the industry with two very special honors. The Lifetime Achievement Award was given this year to Amy Hennig, whose career in the industry began in the Atari era. She has since become famous for her work as creative director and writer of the Uncharted series. On hand to receive the Pioneer Award was veteran game developer Rieko Kodama, whose own 30-plus-year career includes classic titles such as Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd, and Skies of Arcadia.
“The Game Developers Choice Awards represent the most refined games of the year, and the sheer variety of games honored tonight showed that games can still represent wholly new and unique creative visions,” said Katie Stern, general manager of GDC, in a news release.
“A number of independently developed titles like Celeste, Gris and Florence helped prove how internal or deeply personal turmoil can make for massively appealing games for millions of fans. While games like God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 capture our imagination with poignant moments juxtaposed against epic tales of staggering scale and technical prowess. We embrace and accept all these amazingly creative works, and we’re proud to recognize these nominees and winners alike for the imagination and hard work that brought them here.”

God of War (2018) is arguably one of the best series reinventions, second only to Resident Evil 4.

What does Rockstar have to do to get an Oscar GoTY around here :hah:

Pretty solid picks all of them. Indies taking the Narrative, Design and Audio awards is very impressive. Tim Schafer killed it. He was a great host.

BAFTA usually wraps up the GoTY proceedings. All in all an unsurprising outcome even on the Metacritic certified tally. Rockstar can't catch a break.

Overall GoTY winner tally, God of War surpasses Breadth of the Wild but falls way short of the Game of the Generation. It's upto The Last of Us Part 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 to take that crown away from Witcher 3.

2015 - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - 257
2018 - God of War - 197
2017 - Legend of Zelda: Breadth of the Wild - 189
2016 - Uncharted 4 - 165
2014 - Dragon Age Inquisition - 134

So GoW wins on the Metacritic certified tally as well?

Breath of the Wild remains the game to have the highest Metacritic certified GoTY tally. Looking forward to Sekiro taking that crown /s :p

I will be impressed by Sekiro breaks 10 GoTY wins.
Bloodborne was From's highest rated game, yet it got sidelined by TW3. I don't see the situation being any different for Sekiro, with RE2 dominating GoTY awards based on the existing 2019 release calendar.

More like crushed, and rightly so :hah:
And before that it was Dark Souls 2 which got sidelined by Mordor and Inquisition lol

While we are discussing games that got sidelined, one has to mention Nioh, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 and consequently DMC5 as well. These games seldom dominate the GoTY awards anymore unless the year is lackluster and they're the only ones battling it out.
